Pick 4.124: Anthony McFarland, Maryland

Post by bradshaw2ben » Sat Apr 25, 2020 5:01 pm

thoughts? faster than quick, dumber than a post

*Anthony McFarland, redshirt Sophomore, RB WR/KR, Maryland, 5081 05-08, 208 lb, 30 3/8 arm, 08 7/8 hand, 73 3/8 wingspan
4.44 40 yard, 29 1/2, VJ, 09'08" BJ
10. ANTHONY McFARLAND, Maryland (5-8, 208, 4.44, 4): McFarland’s claim to fame was a 21-carry, 298-yard explosion against Ohio State in November 2018 when he scored on runs of 81 and 75 yards. “Just looking at that game, you get excited about him,” said one scout. “I remember there was one run, you go, ‘Who is this?’ Didn’t have quite the production you’d expect. He is a talented guy with speed.” McFarland departed with two years of eligibility remaining. “We took him off the board because his football character is absolutely atrocious,” said another scout. “He’s like a child. Really high maintenance. Every week there’s going to be something with this guy. Now, talent-wise, whew. He’s a weapon.” He ran a fast 40 at the combine but fared poorly in the vertical jump (29 ½) and broad jump (9-8). “Oh, man, he can accelerate,” a third scout said. “He looks like Dalvin Cook. He’s a little smaller but he has that type of speed. If you can give him a crease in a one-cut scheme I think he could be effective. Dalvin’s a more complete player, especially when you factor in the off-the-field stuff.” He finished with 239 carries for 1,636 (6.8) and 12 TDs to go with 24 receptions. McFarland’s Wonderlic score of 11 was the lowest among the top 12 backs. He’s from Hyattsville, Md.

I doubt seriously that he's better than Whyte

I can deal with dumb- its stupid guys that this team doesn't want to have to deal with anymore.

He makes sense as a KR or PR while he's trying to find downs in the offense. This is clearly a Kansas City fall out pick. It seems like they have nothing but speed over there and the entire league is scrambling to find the next Tyreek Hill on day 3.

I liked what Whyte brought to the team last season. Unfortunately, I think McFarland brings the exact same thing but slightly slower. This pick is a head scratcher for me.

I was bummed to see Leki Futo go a few picks earlier... not sure what we're gonna do at NT this season.

Because Tomlin. Wonder why B2B would disagree with Tomlin.

Again, I defer to the experts but. . . meh.

Nice acceleration and a decent jump cut, but he won't make it to the second level in the nfl. Too many bad reads/ angles by linebackers and missed tackles in highlights I saw. He's diminutive, and looks like he's got fragile legs. Seeing how he busted his leg in HS and had a high ankle sprain in 2019.
Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the pigeon is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won anyway.

I’m fine with the pick; dont get the hate. Floor is bad feature back (he can block and catch, so we dont have to create gimmick plays to get him on the field unlike other RBs); no idea what he could do with any semblance of offense around him.

He’s got 20 lbs. on Rainey and 25 on Archer.

So hopefully turns out better than either of those two garbage picks.

Seems to have some wheels from the highlights.

Is he better than Whyte though?

Can he block? All I want to know.

RB blocking was beyond horrendous last year.

Maybe because, unlike some people, I agree when I agree and disagree when I disagree, no matter who it is.

Floor is Kerrith Whyte outplays him at similar usage/style, and gets cut anyway because of draft status. Mcfarland is supposedly a tool in football character, he apparently doesn't hit the weight room based on his combine, and his 10yd get off is slow for a fast guy.

kerrith had like 100 yards last season. He’s nice with ball in his hands, but you cant get the ball in your hands if you arent on the field and you can’t put an RB on the field much if you can’t run your normal playbook when they are out there.

That has more to do with them playing inferior players in front of him (Hi, Edmunds) and lack of familiarity. Maybe he comes in this year and is more in the mix for touches and a job?

Between Connor, Samuels, Snell, and Edmunds we desperately needed some speed in the backfield... McFaraland gives us that but so did Kerrith Whyte without the cost of a 4th round pick

So does this mean they consider Mac an upgrade over Whyte? I don’t know if he’s better, but Whyte did nothing to get overly excited about.
Or maybe they like both and want that speed on the field at all the times. No reason why both Mac and Whyte can’t stick to the roster...very likely this is JCs last ride, and who knows how many games he’ll be available.
We complain that the offense needs speed...they draft speed and we complain.
I don’t know if this kid is going to make it or not, but I’m an Ohio State fan, and I remember swearing like a drunken sailor as this kid sprinted up and down the field on my Buckeyes a couple seasons ago. I’m anxious to see what he can do for my side... ;)

One last post before I wander back to rugby union land until next draft season.

The comps to Rainy and Archer?

No, McFarland squats 500Lbs. He is a strong wee fucker & when he gets it right? He can blow up a game. The Ohio State game wasn't just impressive for 298 yards.

It was more impressive that he ran through, past and around Ohio St defenders doing so. Then ran away from defenders. He also broke a shed load of tackles in that and many of his other 100 plus yard rushing games.

That Ohio St D? Was about as stocked as you can get in CFB.

His last game of college career v Mich St was damn good as well.

He has some very nice tape but also some games where he does a milk carton.

He has some game, and he is young but

McFarland has issues, piss poor pass pro being top of the list and injury concerns a close second.

I like the player but he is a gamble and was imho drafted too early.

Though,it would not shock me if he is very fun to watch in pre season.

Before you make too many judgments on him go watch some games. Ohio St, Syracuse, Temple, Nebraska and Minnesota give you a decent grasp of what he can & cannot do.

Everyone stay safe and enjoy the season when/if it starts.

he didn’t have anyone ahead of him on the depth chart. His problem was that his position is “running back that can’t block”, which, like “CB that can’t tackle” etc just doesnt offer many potential snaps.

McFarland’s running style immediate reminds me of DeAngelo Williams. Anonymous scout and wonderlic don’t mean that much, imo. We will wait and see how he turns out. Any RB would have trouble breaking in over three more experienced guys. But McFarland is the speedster of the group.

In 2018 against Ohio State, McFarland ripped off touchdown runs of 81 and 75 yards and totaled 298 yards rushing. As an OSU fan I was ready to break my TV.
