What An Excellent Draft!
What An Excellent Draft!
I can't even imagine how excellent the 2023 draft is. I know it's not over but the later rounds & UDFA's are pretty similar & I have full confidence in the front office. No hesitation to trade up & trade down in getting value & all players BPA & team needs simultaneously.
Getting great value on players who slid.

That will be a relevant argument if things get turned around! We like to yell about his lieutenants, but maybe it is his majors and colonels?

Amazing draft, love how they are filling holes and don’t forget the aggressive o-line FA haul!
Only question I have now is who is returning punts and kickoffs, cannot be Gunner, no fucking way.

I’m just enjoying that I’ve had nothing to bitch and moan about. I’m even getting a little excited about the 23 season…but just a little.

Last time I've felt this good about a draft was 2004.

To be fair, the Steelers are just doing what the Ravens did for a number of years... take the guy who slides and get lauded by draft experts.
The nice thing is the guys have dropped in positions of need, and when you have 3 picks in the first two rounds and you have solid guys available to fill those holes, its pretty easy.
The key was getting a top tier tackle in R1, because those were all gone by the top of the second, and you didn't make a reach or trade down to take the last one and still get value.

Bengals add two day 3 Wrs. And a RB.

I do have to say I ended up liking this Draft. Rally good players of need
Obliteration Is Imminent
This changes my opinion of Coach Mike.
If the season rolls along with these cats producing and KP being the next Steve Young it’ll really change it and his legacy.
But if he and Cannyda go two stooges the whole thing is a goddamn waste of time.
Here’s to positive vibes. This feels different.

Best draft of the Tomlin era even with his nepotistic finger prints all over it

Takes a serious kinda fucktard to bitch about this…

The Steelers covered all their needs with BPA's. Clearly, it wasn't Tomlin's doing. Perhaps a fresh leader at GM & the ex-Philly is showing his worth. Covering all the big needs is something special for the Steelers - offensive line, cornerback, defensive line, second tight end & inside linebacker who can play the outside (yes, I know it's now the reverse but we'll see). Okay, they needed a safety, too but perhaps, that was accomplished, too - picking up a cornerback/safety later on.Steeldrama wrote: ↑Sun Apr 30, 2023 12:34 amBest draft of the Tomlin era even with his nepotistic finger prints all over it
I'm so glad they picked an offensive tackle in the 1st round & wisely moving up 2 spots to get a possibly excellent one & robbing the Jets who expected to get him a pick before the Steelers. I didn't want JPjr. in the 1st round thinking picking a coenerback who can't catch in the mid-first round not a great choice (& the rest of the NFL seems to have felt the same) & wanted a tackle in the 1st round last year, as well but by pick 32, JPjr. was BPA & easily justifiable there. It's pretty rare to see a Steeler draft without bad or mediocre picks/reaches & so nice not to hope that Steelers can salvage another so-so draft by acquiring an UDFA who could make the roster.

Or maybe it was all Tomlin’s doing and The Colbert Report was the anchor. #freetomlinblu wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 1:38 amThe Steelers covered all their needs with BPA's. So there were medical concerns with regards to CB Trice which explains why he fell to the 7th RND almost out of the draft. Such concerns that he was not invited to the Senior Bowl. This I was unaware of.
There are still some concerns with longevity due to his leg injuries, broken ankle, sprained ankle torn ACL and some knee issues. A tweet by Jim nagy explains the league was aware back in November.
Trice is described as in the same vein of talent as JPJ but doesn’t have the same length. Trice is described as having better skills taking away the ball.

I beseech you to never refer to Kevin Colbert as "The Colbert Report" again. That man helped up get to 3 SBs and win 2 SBs, comparing him to a "comedian" is a joke in and of itself.Smashmouth21 wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 1:44 amOr maybe it was all Tomlin’s doing and The Colbert Report was the anchor. #freetomlinblu wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 1:38 amThe Steelers covered all their needs with BPA's. I liked the draft.
Weidl-Khan did a nice job
Loved the the trade up
Loved the trade down
To say this wasn't Tomlin's doing is pretty far from accurate, however.
Joey Porter Jr- You don't think Tomlin was banging the table for Peezy's kid at 32 instead of taking multiple offers for the 32nd pick???
Keeanu Benton- Not a nepotism pick, but swaggin Ike approved and Tomlin's big bug eyes were all over him during Senior bowl practice.
Nick Herbig- No way Tomlin wasn't behind drafting this kid for big brother Nate.
Spencer Anderson- Future Steelers' scout Dino Tomlin went to Maryland.
Nick Markakis on Astros: "Every guy over there needs a beating."
KC had the parking brake set on this rig for the last decade.stillthere wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 5:07 amI beseech you to never refer to Kevin Colbert as "The Colbert Report" again. On the PS, both Jason Huntley and Jamarcus Bradley returned kicks in college and did it to a limited degree in the NFL. Jordan Byrd is a return specialist brought in as an UDFA, so he'll have a shot. Toss in Gunner and there's 4 guys fighting it out for the return man spot.86n96 wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 3:41 pmCalvin Austin?chippedhamsandwich wrote: ↑Sat Apr 29, 2023 5:53 pmAmazing draft, love how they are filling holes and don’t forget the aggressive o-line FA haul!

If worse comes to worse, let's also not forget - Diontae Johnson made the pro bowl as Punt Returner in his rookie season and Peterson was the league's best return man once upon a time.

@stillthere I was not intending to seriously denigrate Kevin Colbert. Just creatively reminding folks that the anti-Tomlin narratives can swing both ways.stillthere wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 5:07 amI beseech you to never refer to Kevin Colbert as "The Colbert Report" again. I don’t think the problem was Tomlin OR Colbert. I think it was both together
They got too insulated. Doing each others nails and junk.
Weidl shows the clear advantage of an outside perspective. Not saying it always works or always will. But I hope they can keep this balance. It seems to be well informed (Weidl) and logical (Kahnlin and the deuce)
Whatever they did this time just keep doing

I don't want to sound whiny or anything, but someone posted along the lines of "I don't hate the Porter pick, but I preferred Branch"
I feel the same way. I predict JPJ will have a career like Joe Haden: solid but not spectacular 8 plus year starter. Nothing wrong with that for a 2nd round pick.
But I think Branch has more potential, is more dynamic and has the ability to eliminate a ton of mistakes our ILB's make in coverage.
I don't mind the Benton pick, but again would have been super cool to get JPJ and Branch. That would have solidified their secondary for the next 5 years or so. I do understand the Benton pick bc the Dline needs more talent. So that reads to me that Loudermilk is donezo in Pitt

I can say with complete honestly, that every single Steelers pick looks great on their YouTube highlight reels. It’s almost like they are only showing me the best plays.
JPJ looks physical, so does Cory Trice. Darnell Washington looks like a beast, Eric Green vibes. Nick Herbig looks like a TJ Watt type but smaller frame.

I would have to imagine he is either in his last camp in Pittsburgh or he will be the last guy in that room teetering on roster or practice squad perhaps. It is a shame too, he has the physical traits to be a young version of Heyward but he seems to not allow the physical attributes to do what they should be able to do.
