The WR and TE room

Pickens

Looking forward to George Pickens year II.
He showed great hands last year, in a limited route tree.
He really was pretty good snagging those sideline 50/50 balls.
As a rookie, he caught 68% of his contested catches, a higher percentage than stars like A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf last season.
Apparently, they are introducing the "Slant" to his repertoire this year.
"Those plays" are slants, which the Steelers are working on with Pickens to add bigtime underneath plays to his already electric deep ball game.
What next year bring? The button hook?

Austin

Hoping this kid can get on the field.
He will either be a monster addition to this offense, as we have not had 4.32 speed in forever.

Lots of possibilities where he can line up.....

4 wide with Dionte, Pickens, Robinson and Austin....with Najee or Samuels in the backfield.....
Or 5 wide with Washington at TE, along with Dionte, Pickens, Robinson and Austin....will be fun to watch if they can coordinate it.

Or will he be another major disappointing little guy, that could not get on the field.

Seems like they are also working him as kick returner.....if there are kick returns this year.
Punt returner?

Robinson

"I love Allen, man"

Those are the words of his young QB, Kenny P.

Loves his work ethic and communication.

Seeing pictures of Austin is killing me. Seems like every picture i see has him trying to catch a football with his chest, with his arms just there outstretched in case for whatever reason the ball doesn’t stick when it hits his chest. Maybe it’s just the same picture again and again, but it’s a terrible look.

What’s killing me is he looks like a kid, size-wise, compared to everyone else.

5’ 6” never looked so short.

Hoping this kid can get on the field.
Only after he's fully mastered running backwards after catching the ball.

Heck of a nice ball from Kenny there.

I think Austin gets away with a little push there. Savvy move, but Pierre running step-for-step with his 4.6 speed doesn't exactly draw comparisons to Tyreek Hill

Late and behind. He puts it out in front, where it should be and you’d see the (sub?)4.3…
Buuut…I don’t think that’s Pickett…no gloves. Rudolph?

Also…it looks like that video is from 2022 training camp. It looks like the St. Vincent’s College fields.

Matt Williamson has talked about the lack of inside breaking routes the team in general ran last year or two, yet when they did happen they usually worked well. The defense probably has no real expectation to cover those since they are so few and far between. I personally think the TEs will create stress on the edge of Ds this season which in turn should open the middle and the seams.

If the youngins play to potential and we stay healthy the array of personnel groupings that could be drawn up are pretty limitless. It is like rolling die in Dungeons & Dragons. What combination of 6 WRs, 3 1/2 to 4 TEs, 3 1/2ish RBs can you come up with and draw formations and motions for?

11
12
13
14
22
23
5 wide

It is like taking a little bit of everything on a Thanksgiving plate or at a big buffet. Get a smattering of all of it see what is the best combo.

Pickens, Harris, Jones (T eligible), Washington, Muuth should convert at a 97% or higher rate on a yard to go situations maybe 2 yards to go. Just Washington and Jones alone are almost 600lbs of forward moving violent momentum. Come out tight and shift TEs off end of line & now a big front on D is stretched sideways which can create a crease inside or a speed/height mismatch outside.

Size and speed that can attack from different angles and forced mismatches. Even if they don't get the actual mismatch they may cause a team to burn a time-out because they are stuck with a DE on Austin III. Shoot just think back to the SD game a few years ago where they schemed Keenan Allen into coverage by Fort, Williams and Bostic all night for the tune of 120 or 130 yards and a lucky TD when Davis leveled Haden in the EZ.

Huddle with 2 TE go 2x2 with the TEs on one side and the WRs on the other and motion Warren to either catch a screen behind Washington and Muuth or Robinson and Pickens or any mix and match of the 4 players named all of whom are good blockers against DBs and LBs. Looks like a run look and now we are 5 wide. Shoot Harris motions out to the slot and now you have 4 players all 6'3" or taller on the field at eligible spots plus a wide bodied 6'1" Harris.

Muuth may never put up Kelce level stats but athletically he can do just about anything Kelce can do. Travis may have a little looser hips that Pat but they are both very very good at being versatile TEs.

Could go speed all over with Johnson, Austin III, McFarland, A. Miller & Muuth? Maybe Washington is faster or Pickens..

Allow me this happy time to think of what could be. I feel rejuvenated by the mere speculation of these ideas.
