It is fair - today Watt was as invisible as everyone else when the game was in contention. Watt was nowhere to be found while they were rolling us on their way to a 20pt lead.
So who is your player of the game?

So many to choose from

Ehhh, I'll go with Austin.

Crazy game that basically no one showed up other than Watt. The Muth TD was nice, otherwise your lone offensive highlight is probably an OOB catch by Pickens.

SF had a great gameplan. Pull out all the shots early to get a quick lead, which neutralized our biggest defensive asset which is our pass rush.

By the time Watt started making big plays the game was away from us.

Watt was the only Steeler who played well.

The rest of the defense....well.....folks are going to find out.

This defense, up the middle, is worse than last year's.

We are worse at corner and safety.

Shit is about to get real.

I could not believe how poorly Levi Wallace played.

I mean.....he played like Russell Wilson did last year.

Like he had 5 mg of Xanax in him.

I don’t doubt the stats. They just NEVER add up to anything significant

And……do you really think it’s acceptable to lose that fumble to Purdy ?
you type things like this, and it makes me question if you have any concept of what it takes to play football

Watch the replay

Purdy lost the ball and recovered the ball, before Watt even had an opportunity to go for the ball

Watt was

the ONLY positive in today's game
You’re talking about STD, whose prob never played a second of organized sports.

He's the court jester. Just laugh at him. That's what he's there for.

Other than Watt, did a single Steeler make more than 1 positive play today? 3 sacks, 2 FF and a recovery is a career day for most edge rushers and we’ve got people bitching about him.

I think the issue is whether it’s Watt’s fault that forcing multiple fumbles and recording multiple sacks amounts to not winning.

What did the O do? 15 plays in the first half? Team sport means 2 sides lift their fair share. The D got gashed but the O did jack and shit for 28 minutes then did less after that for another 30 mins.

The only team we may be better than are called the NY Giants.

Is Watt single handedly supposed to win the game?

Did the offense have more than negative two yards at the time?

It’s like the stupid debate about the KC playoff loss when the offense did literally nothing until prevent garbage time, but Ben is great and Watt who scored a touch down is average.
Willie Parker sucks when his long runs don't count.

Some negatives.

Zero penetration from the DL.
I can not recall one single play in which a DL shot thru to disrupt a run play.
Cam will be 35 this time next year.
Adams is not a starter. Nope. he is in his 8th year, has 1.5 career sacks and a total of 87 career tackles.
Larry O. We will see what he does in 2023. But teams are not game planning with worries of him being a major disrupter.

I think Benton can be huge.
Tuff debut vs. a SF team that has a defender guessing every play and defending every part of the field.....all 120 x 53 yards
3 tackles for him though in his first game.
He had one nice swim move to get in Purdys face, another 1/2 second and he gets in a pretty good hit.
He will be on the field a lot more Monday night with Cleveland's run game.

I thought Leal was active as well. He was the only defensive lineman credited with tackle for a lose. May have been a Purdy scramble / roll out to his left. Leal showed a nice burst to push Purdy out of bounds before he could turn upfield.

Defensive lineman should be a top pick in the 2024 draft.
Yup. Get to where the Eagles and Cowboys are as ferocious defensive fronts.
We may need to go Dline in first round.
Have to keep building the trenches. OL has been addressed the last two off seasons.........Cole, Daniels, Isaacs, Jones....
Its the DL time.

Offense reverted to the long horizontal throws to the sidelines.
Those are actually "long throws" when you think about it,
They wind up being 20-25+ yard throws, depending on what side of the hash you throw from.
And the throws need to be ropes.
With DB's moving forward. on those plays, I was waiting for a pick six.
Plus those throws leave very little option for the target; catch it before going out of bounds, catch it at full speed and try not going out of bounds, catch it at full speed and try and stop on a dime to change direction.

Crossing patterns. Again, very limited in our play book.
I love these patterns, makes the defender have to change direction horizontally and not just back or forward. Its when speed will come into play, its easier to create separation on crossing patterns than vertical routes, as you use speed, confusion with coverages, pass offs of coverage, picks, rubs, etc, We lack this in our game, have so for years.

Jeez. Look at what SF did.
Aioyuk. 8 - 129 2 TDs.
He ran alot of crossing patterns. Alot of times coverage stayed with him......and then he broke lose crossing and Purdy found him.

Calvin Austin
He should be running a ton of crossing patterns. Think of what Tyrek Hill does and watch some replays of his catches, he is covering the entire football field and he pulls away with those wheels.

We line up Austin and expect him to beat tight at the line coverage and win vertical routes.
He is 5'-9" 162. ( Tyrek Hill 5'-10" - 185 )
Can not have CBs tight on the line to abuse him, redirect, slow his release. etc.
Get this kid moving.
Get him in motion more for free releases.
Have him cross in motion 6-8-10 times before actually handing him the ball once.
His speed should be creating chaos, concern, confusion and defender shuffling - PRESNAP!
Yet it felt like he was lined up in a set stance play after play.

We should be expecting, with proper use and following proper instructions.....have a
Welcome to the NFL party for this kid on MNF

A few positives. a few...lol.

Major disappointment of a game for me. But, the positive spin...........
Was that the toughest game on our 2023 schedule. Maybe.
Its in the rear view mirror

It was just one game.
and one game vs. a SB contender.
Who have a top 5, top 3 defense.
Who is loaded on offense with a top 2 RB, a top 2 TE a top 10-15 WR who is all over the field in Debo and a very good #2 in Aioyuk, a headsee QB..........and brilliant mind that puts it all in motion; a composer, a painter and poet to make it all happen.

We throw crayons on a table and finger paint with out sketching out ideas in pencil before producing the final portrait.

I thought Benton and Leal were active for young guys with not a lot of snaps under their belts.
Leal had 196 snaps last year.

I liked the use of 3 ILBs at times, Wonder how many sets they had with those three? I know I saw a handful of those.

Kwon had 9 tackles.
Holcomb had 5 tackles.

Elan Roberts had 7 tackles and 2 TFL. in his first game as a Steelers

For comparison.
Devin Bush had 2 TFL for the entire 2022 season. Devin Bush had 2 TFL the entire 2021 season and ZERO in 5 games of 2019.
Devon Bush had 4 TFL in his last 3 years. "Repeat the line"
Devon Bush had 4 TFL in his last 3 years.

As far as the defense.
That is a hell of a lot of new players mixed into game ONE.....vs. THAT type of offense.
Kwon, Roberts, Holcomb, Peterson, Neal, Golden, Benton, Herbig, Porter,

New ILB's, half a new secondary.

That's an entire new ILB corps to change out ( that's corps as opposed to last years spelling with an "E" at the end. )

They will need tome to mesh.

Anyway.
I have huge expectations for game #2.
At home again.
An extra day to prepare.
An extra day to heal.
Prime time game.
Division game.
Can't go 0-2.
0-2 means we need to go 9-6 in last 15 to get to non losing season.

Go Steelers.

The whole team was shit. I had high hopes going into this season. At least they brought me back down to reality at the earliest possible moment.

Play Jones and play JPJ. The future is now. If these idiots are going to keep sucking then the young guys will take their spots.
They should play Benton, too. They won’t for one simple reason: NHALS.

One big positive....

Yes Cam with the groin and DJ with a hammy......

But its always a relief to get thru pre-season.....and then thru game ONE with out losing a player for the year or a half year+ on the DL.
TJ game 1 last year.
Woodson game 1 1995

Someone usually posts the pass distribution chart.........

I thought I heard somewhere that we had more passes behind the LOS than beyond 15 yards.

I’m guessing a high percentage of completions were outside the numbers.

And we thought MT was adverse to throwing between the numbers before!

On that front, it's probably gonna be 2-3 steps backwards after those results.

And IIRC, that completion was to Pickens on an in cut relatively early. Yuckky.
