To be fair, all QBs miss open WRs every week. I’m not totally absolving KP8 from refusing to pull the trigger on some of these throws. On that play, he clearly decided presnap that the ball was going to Warren.

But don’t act like KP8 can’t make those throws. We have seen him do it, and do it in high pressure situations.

If you want to blame Overachiever Mike for the conservative offensive approach, I do get that. But, again, to be fair, it’s working. The Bills have a Franchise QB and turnovers are absolutely killing them.

This is a picture I see going around as an example of how Kenny doesn’t read defenses, and how Canada’s play design can get receivers open.

This was he okay where, I believe, Kenny decided ahead of time he was just throwing the ball to Warren and didn’t even try to read the field.

But he had big plays available on at least three other routes had he taken the time to look for them.

IMG_2735.jpeg
Here's the context to this play/route combo. Yup, those WR's are open- no debate here.

Buuuuut...he also believes Warren will be open. He obviously isn't, but look at the options:

- Deep throw to the left 1 on 1 coverage
- Throw to the middle with a S lingering
- Flat route to Warren
- I'm ignoring Pickens bc KP doesn't even look to his right so that's not possible

So out of 3 options he picked the safest one. I'm convinced it's coaching: get it out, take the safe play, etc.
Why am I convinced it's coaching? Bc we saw Ben get it out that quick too...
Actually I shouldn't have praised Canada so much. B2B actually responded to this play on Twitter.

Apparently Johnson was supposed to run a curl and changed his route up.

A curl would have brought another defender close in to the flat route so if that was Canada's initial design...Jesus Christ!

The Bills have been to the playoffs for five straight seasons and just canned their offensive coordinator mid-season.

The Steelers would be better off long term if Kenny Pickett was actually taking chances now. But you are a lemming who is just happy the Steelers are slightly better than you anticipated before the season started record wise.

So, yea, if you think Pickett is going to stick around long term as a starter throwing dump offs to covered RB's with WR's running open down field, then go ahead and celebrate.

At this point, the people defending this iteration of the Steelers are reminding me of the people who were defending Disney's decisions with Marvel and Star Wars a few years ago. They were crowing when Captain Marvel managed to make a billion dollars. and telling us it would be fine to go all in on the message. How did that shit work out long term? Oh, yea...

Kenny playing small ball is great. And the quiet part a guy like Smashmout won't admit to is he prefers it to an aging Ben (who, if I remember correctly, he trashed).

Mike Tomlin is better than Belichick because he's got this team to 5-3. You can believe that. What any fan with a brain sees is smoke and mirrors and a tam in for a hard crash when they run into one of the few top tier teams in the league. We should celebrate it!

What I read was you running around like a child calling people who disagree with you "lemmings." Like, have you ever actually looked up the definition of that word?

So I'm having fun pointing it out. All QB's miss open WR's. They don't all rank near the bottom in every statistical category. Kenny is missing more than a few WR's.

I’m not going to explain it to you if you can’t figure out what a Board Lemming is by yourself. If you want to join in the collective group think have at it. You sound stupid though when you refuse to acknowledge accomplishment and your best argument for continuing to be negative is well, golly, if the Steelers make the playoffs they will get blown out. Thanks for your riveting analysis, Miss Cleo.

As for KP8, no one (except maybe KC) is anointing him. We all want to see more. But you can’t deny he has been clutch and has made big throws when needed. Unless, of course, you have a Lemming agenda to pursue.

Just to be clear, I'm far from anointing Pickett. I just don't hammer the guy on a daily basis because I realize how difficult it must be to try and play QB in a Matt Canada/Mike Tomlin offense. I think Pickett's frustrated and is doing his best and I'm rooting for him.

It's really that simple.

I thought Pickett played pretty awfully in the last game. He pissed me off by forcing short throws to covered receivers, but I also would bet Pickett has been discouraged from going downfield unless a receiver is wide the fuck open and to avoid the middle of the field almost completely.

It has to suck to play QB in this offense. Ask Ben Roethlisberger. I guarantee he would agree wholeheartedly.

The fact that the Steelers are still winning and are in the thick of the playoff hunt, I'll take it and keep rooting for Pickett and this team. They are a lot of fun to watch. Just gotta hope the offense keeps progressing (they made some nice strides last week and the running game is coming together) and the passing game gets its act together.

Not anointing Pickett but I'm sure as fuck rooting for him. He's easily the best QB on the roster. Why wouldn't anybody root for him if they claim to be a Steelers fan?

By golly. What's the point of the NFL season, again?

There's a number of arguments about this team. What they are doing isn't sustainable. That what we would need for this "success" to be sustainable is notably absent. It's fools gold, and beyond that, real competitors aren't the team everyone in the playoff field wants to draw.

What's the point of the NFL season? Squeaking into the playoffs and getting your ass kicked.

You're riveting analysis consists of telling us...what? That Mike Tomlin is making Belichick look bad because he's going to fight it out for a Wild Card spot by season's end? Gosh, where are my pompoms!

Others are rooting for him too dipshit.

Does that mean they can’t also be critical of his “below the line” level of play at the same time?

You know, play so pedestrian even Jibbs said we need more out of KP.

But say it here and you are a “pretend GM”.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 88 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

Thanks for explaining for the 782nd time why you’re critical of Pickett and his below the line play.

I didn’t know the other times.

Keep rooting for him. I’m sure Pickett appreciates it.

Good. So now if he continues to look like a journeyman JAG and I comment on it you won’t feel the need to rush to his defense.

I've been watching football since the 1960s. I maintain that you can see when a QB has "it". Now, they may not be consistently successful early, and they may have flaws that doom their innate ability to play QB in the NFL--a ridiculously tough job--but you can see some magic in what they do when they're in the pocket and bullets are flying. You either see their preternatural calm and vision for the field under duress or at least some outlier tools to clue you in that they could be special.

I think the mere fact you have to squint to see it tells you the answer. Now, a QB who doesn't scream "it" might develop over time to be a good pro and maybe even a solid caretaker of a solid team ISO a superstar QB.

I said from the beginning that the guy he reminded me of was Maddox. Came into Denver at the age Pickett was when he was a Junior at Pitt. Showed occasional flashes (I lived in Denver then and saw him play) but was just not it, so they moved on after two years. It would totally not shock me if--and that's a big IF-- Pickett deteriorates in PIT and moves on... he could emerge somewhere and spark a team with his competitiveness and ability to rally late. Maybe a team that lets him throw the ball and make mistakes?

I think Pickett needs to be bolder, make mistakes from inside the pocket, learn from them... that is if he wants to develop and have a chance at being more than barely adequate. That's what Maddox did in the XFL. Played IDGAF football at fairly low stakes. Built some swagger.

Free Kenny to fail and let's see what he's made of.
Your perspective on this is so on point.

It’s Daniel Jones. Let’s just hope the franchise isn’t dumb enough to get backed into a corner and give him a big extension. That’s my biggest fear.

Mine as well, I want KP8 to turn into a stud, but I just don't see that happening. My comparison would be Colt McCoy, a guy that can be a decent backup for many years.

All you Kenny lovers Here me out. Ryan tannehill with the titans 2019-21. And that isn’t some passive aggressive dig.

I watch tape and watch lots of qbs. I don’t watch the Steelers to root for them because honestly I am not a fan. I live in area so I follow them but I just watch for player development. Don’t care about fantasy or numbers either. But I get get the ticket to just watch all the teams.

His ceiling is Ryan tannehill. And that is not a bad thing.
With a defense and and running game. You can win with him.

You are going to have to use him on play action
Rollouts bootlegs. Rpo game. Use his wheels

He is not really accurate. He is accurate but not key hole accurate. It is hit and miss He doesn’t throw with anticipation. His arm strength is good enough though. He is a good leader
He is clutch .

If he has average team it’s going to be hit or miss that your team makes playoffs.

But if you got a good defense. Running game and one big receiver with great catch radius you are going to make playoffs and even win division sometime.

Think tannehill , with titans with brown and Henry.

Now if you have average team you will get tannehill who got Miami to playoffs one or two times. Not good enough.

But this is his ceiling. He is not there yet. It’s going to take another two or three years. He needs to get comfortable and start throwing with anticipation

Not sure why he can’t do that now. Tannehill was receiver on college. So I get his delay but Kenny is older and played 5 years of qb in college. So he doesn’t have that excuse.

The thing with this type of comparison and qb is that it will drive you bonkers. Some stretches will look great or like he turned corner and then you will be looking at mocks to replace him. It’s maddening But honestly that happens with most qbs who are not top 10 in the league. Sometimes even top 8.

Hope that helps. At least it will explain. The ups and downs. And yes. He needs new system but it has to be predicated on run game and play action and his legs.
I have a few ideas or names of you are interested.

Even if his ceiling is Tannehill who says he ever gets there?

Tons of QBs have upsides and never reach that upside. Happens all the time, actually. There are things you can develop and there are things you can’t improve because they are tied to physical attributes.

Kenny’s brain isn’t there. I don’t know if it will ever be.

That shitty 2 yard pass he threw in that photo…I mean he’s not even looking at DJ sprinting wide open on that side of the field. That’s terrible quarterbacking.
