Who To Keep For The Rebuild?
Re: Who To Keep For The Rebuild?
It’s real simple. Fire Tomlin, give the new head coach full autonomy over staff and roster. Everyone is fair game…No exceptions!

Defense,: Watt, Minkah, JPJ, Benton, Highsmith. Cam should retire. Everyone else is replaceable.
This team is on the precipice of a full-blown rebuild.
This is where I'm at with the offense, these guys all have too much stench on them, even if they can be resurrected....Jones and Warren I'd keep.

I'm hesitant on the defense because they have really been decimated at middle linebacker, and even in yesterday's game at safety with the ejection and injury.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 1:40 pmThe defense is coached just as poorly as the offense imo. Unless they get several big time individual efforts that result in turnovers and/or points, they have a bad game. You rarely see anyone moving around or exotic blitzes or coverages. It's a basic, line them up and let them play scheme. That's why Tomlin gets shredded in big games/playoffs. Other teams are changing things up and scheming to win. Tomlin is doing what he does which means nothing.ToddHaleysNineIron wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 1:05 pmIt should be absolutely alarming to hear Kevin Dotson, playing well, talking about being moved back to RG in LA. Terrible asset management, and given the money and draft picks thrown at the offensive line, the results are downright season destroying.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 4:39 amI don't know how you guys can count anyone on this roster out the way they've been coached. Trade Tomlin for a high pick, have a good draft and offseason and this roster isn't that far away from competing with a really good coaching staff. They've been the opposite of coached up. I wouldn't do a complete rebuild until the new coach has a season to see what he can do with what they have.
That's where I start, I get rid of Pat Meyer and I spend for an offensive line coach, and for the most part I replace the entire offensive position coach tree from the coordinator on down. No more friends and family hiring.
Defensively I don't think it's quite as bad... for an NFL defense at least.. I think there are depth issues for sure, but the league isn't made for shut down defenses... so I'd rather focus on the offense to start. Personnel wise, the only must is to upgrade at C for sure.... that's killing them right now,
To me, it's more of a depth problem - and certainly if the right situation comes where you can upgrade a starter, that by default will improve depth.
Sure coaching could be better, but I don't know if you can do it all per say, or if this organization is capable. Defenses in general suck around the league, I'd rather have one that can cause a few turnovers once in a while than fighting against the desire of the NFL in terms of shutting down an offense... because that's just not going to happen.

This is what this franchise needs. But we both know that this thought will never cross Deuce's mind. His old man did this. Look at the results.

Trade everyone with value. Keep like 2-3 guys. Unless it’s wild and very lucky circumstances in this league you need to suck to be good again.
This is where NHALS has worked against us. Bless Ben for being such a warrior all of those years with this albatross of a head coach constantly obsessed with crawling into the playoffs in the name of risk-averse football.
We all knew that post-Ben Tomlin would be exposed. I’m actually enjoying this. He’s gotten by and very rich on the backs of a lot of people. He’s a rah rah guy that believes in his own very inflated ego. Can’t stand people like that.
Be gone, and stay gone!

I felt like this too. But yesterday when I saw Jibbs promoting social justice I forgot about all of his flaws.
We are lucky to have him.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

Such a disheartening thread.
Major changes need to be made throughout the Steelers’ organization, yet status quo or mere minor tweaks await.
Not even sure I like the term “Rebuild”
To me a rebuild means the team was once great or even good for an extended period of time.
That ain’t the Tomlin Steelers.
Not this decade it ain’t.
Chuck Noll didn’t "Rebuild" the Steelers.
He BUILT them into the Steelers’ 70’s dynasty.
They were NOTHING before he got there.
This Steelers team needs a Jimmy Johnson approach.
Fire everybody
Trade what few assets you have (bye TJ)
Parlay draft picks into more draft picks.
FAST, AGGRESSIVE, TEAR DOWN.
Rip the band-aid off.
Sadly, it won’t happen.
Me?
I fire Tomlin yesterday.
Hire Houston OC Bobby Slowik.
I saw CJ Stroud shred my ‘Dawgs defense. I still thought he’d bust like every other Ohio St qb.
Wrong.
That’s called player development.
Ben Johnson feels like groupthink to me, but if you give him a Kirk Cousins like vet qb, perhaps you compete on the fly while developing a 1st round stud qb from this year’s crop or next.
I prefer Slowik.
Give him a stud rookie qb and let’s roll!
So fun to fantasize.

Defense is Tomlin's side of the ball and the defense has laid an egg in big games more time than not over the last decade plus, especially after Lebeau left. I stick by cleaning house. That's the only thing that can give us a chance to get back to being a SB contender.ToddHaleysNineIron wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 4:33 pmI'm hesitant on the defense because they have really been decimated at middle linebacker, and even in yesterday's game at safety with the ejection and injury.RemoAZ wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 1:40 pmThe defense is coached just as poorly as the offense imo. Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

I mean I get its a message board and all, but realistically "cleaning house except for 2 or 3 guys" means you are field a roster pretty much full of what, guys from the street? Even if you space it out and don't sign guys to second contracts, you still are going to have a pretty poor roster for quite a while.
We've already seen examples of players leaving here and improving... it's entirely possible you can get a whole lot more out of this roster with a competent coaching staff, which is why it's far easier to do that than get rid of everyone you didn't mock draft.

If you think the coaching has been poor, then that suggests that many of the players this year would look better with a different coach. So this topic confuses me…if we got a new coach, we should let the new coach assess who will help his cause.
I guess if you think Tomlin is a great coach being let down by a sub-par roster, then this is a reasonable discussion, but hard to believe that’s the perspective on this board.

I think the coaching sucks AND the team lacks talent, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Maybe some of the players would be better in different situations, but the Steelers have very few offensive starters who would start on a top-16 team.Mick wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 6:27 pmIf you think the coaching has been poor, then that suggests that many of the players this year would look better with a different coach. This is a 5 win team that lucked out with the Chubb injury in the first Browns game and with the Ravens forgetting how to catch.

I’m thinking the Steelers do a self-imposed revocation of their professional football license, fire and cut everyone, hire some consultants then re-apply for football operations in a few years when they are going to start taking this shit more seriously.

Mentioned turnovers, execution and penalties for reasons they lost. Note he never talks about scheme. Instead he relies on playing a clean game and individual efforts. So he simply HAS to have a better roster to win games. But even then, his approach doesn't maximize that talent, which is why he's won so few playoff games the past 12 years.

Mike Tomlin and Most of the Coaching Staff
There's no more denying it. Steelers are clearly a team that needs a fresh start, but how they got here has a direct arrow pointing to their head coach. The team has had poor draft classes, lack of accountability, total ignorance when it comes to addressing their problems, and it all led here - to a season that has sunk so fast that even Mike Tomlin has run out of ways to defend it.

I am going to say this we are going to see how big Balls Art has this offseason will he keep him around for his Lame duck year?
will he give the guy some kind of extension?
Will he tell him to clean house of his coaches and give Omar a say who will be the new staff

I think the reason Canada got fired was because Deuce needed to see what Kenny looked like with different play calls. Problem is, Kenny got hurt after a game and a half.steelmann58 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 18, 2023 3:07 amI am going to say this we are going to see how big Balls Art has this offseason will he keep him around for his Lame duck year?

My guess is he'd lean toward hiring a defensive coach IF it looked like Kenny could be a franchise QB. Tomlin and whatever OC he can scrape off the garbage pile are going to ruin whatever potential Kenny has left. But not knowing which direction to go without having a read on Kenny COULD mean he decides to save his money and let Tomlin finish out the contract.

There's a high school coach somewhere that would love the opportunity
