There are quite a few reasons but we will stick with not kicking the FG to go up 8 late.

Boswell. Best game of his career.
Payton Wilson played a ton and honestly looked like our best LB. Looked like he belonged.
DeShon Elliott and the rest of the secondary. Everyone had a great day.
Pickens made some sick grabs and was giving a lot of effort out there.
Broderick Jones played a clean game.

I don't mind that call at, Pickens blowing a block was a far bigger thing to moan about. That play was there.stillthere wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 7:58 pmMike Tomlin

MM I disagree it was fine, Pickens completely whiffed on Falcon's safety. Had he merely gotten in the way? Jefferson could've dived for a first with relative ease.Steelperch wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 8:10 pmFG makes it a 1 score game. TD wins it. Makes it 8 points which forces the other team to execute a scoring play and execute a 2 point play. So they would have to have 2 things go right just to tie.
Saying the play call was wrong or any other argument is null due to the concept of the other team having to play perfect ball for the last 5 minutes to have a chance at a tie.

OLine and DLine made plays, let others do their job, especially with a late week QB change

Not to mention the not being up by 8 instead of 5 late meant that the play calling changed after and may have led directly to the injury to the punter (The brightest star of the preseason)

Play call was stupid because Tomlin forgot about all the fumble snaps earlier in the game and the awful history with the QB sneak!Steelperch wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 8:10 pmFG makes it a 1 score game. And your kicker is obviously playing lights out…it was a stupid in game decision with an even worse play call.

I guarantee someone suggested to kick the FG and he just did the opposite to prove a childish point. Was probably Arthur Smith and he wanted to assert his control of the offense. What else would explain Tomlin not wanting his defense in pin back ears mode, to be in a series where they absolutely have to score and then go for 2?

You guys crack me up.
Steelers up until that point were dog walking the Falcons on that drive. It was 4th and less than one and they rushed the play instead of taking their time. Good call poor execution.
A FG doesn’t end the game there. TD and 2 point conversion is still a one score game. Going for the kill there was the correct call to take everything off the defense. They get the first there at worst Falcons get the ball back with no TOs and less than 10 seconds.

It just makes no sense with the rest of the game. We had several drives that we purposely gave up on after first or second down so that we could guarantee a field goal attempt at the expense of a chance at TDs.
You’re going to call the game that way for 56 minutes and then suddenly go for it on 4th instead of taking a gimmie FG that probably gives you probably a 95% chance to win the game?
It makes no sense.

You are right they had 1 good drive on offense the entire game. Then left the door open by maintaining a 5 point lead instead of an 8 point lead because the coach's gut feeling?VeritasSteel wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 9:46 pmYou guys crack me up.

Any hard count there likely gets you a free 5 yards and a first down.
Even the announcers were wondering why the Steelers were in such a rush. Absolutely looked like they never practiced for that situation. No nuance no situational understanding or composure.
That’s on Tomlin.

Not kicking the field goal there, is almost as dumb as the year he was determined to go for it on 4th down, despite three consecutive false start penalties.Jizz Mop wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 8:22 pmThisstillthere wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 8:14 pmNot kicking was stupid.Steelperch wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 8:10 pm

Going for it was fine. I loved going for it but rushing the play was idiotic. That’s on coaching.
Arthur Smith should have been in Fields’ ear to SLOW THE FUCJ DOWN. Try and draw the Falcons offside.
Didn’t even try.

On the fourth down call, the point is they were so jittery, so unsettled that the play was doomed from the start.
Tomlin has been the coach of this team for 17 goddamn seasons and yet situationally we are so so so bad. They had the entire play clock and could milk whatever they needed to there to get set to get a yard and we looked terrible.
This is concerning because we see this year in, and year out.

Good to know!stillthere wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 10:40 pmAn older fun fact (but it still checks out)
Jerome Bettis is from Detroit.
Queen had a quiet game.
Payton Wilson was the best of the 3 ILBs
Elliott and Donte Jackson could not have had better PS debuts
Benton quiet...
But ate up blocks as most of run damage came outside. Left side runs broke down, lost contain.
Not sure Porter saw much thrown his way that I recall.
Safe to say, the OL played better than we all expected. Broderick settled in. Anderson was solid at LG. Think he had a nice pull and block on a late 3rd down conversion.
Dan Moore kept his side clean
Frazier, after first snap exchange looked solid. Looked good leading a few 3rd and short keepers. That last 4th and 1...he had 3 guys lined up in his face a foot away.
A 5th/6th year QB needs to have enough sense to check out of that. Tho, this braintrust probably does not allow a 5th/6th year qb to check out yet. At worst... someone calls a TO seeing that defense formation.
Game management. Big moment decisions. Time out and clock management was a D today.
Fields - B+.
I think he is the snap exchange issue. Get deeper under center.
Off target a bit. Better on his deep throws. Damn shame they continue to eliminate the middle of field for our QBs.
Pickens -A
Targeted all 3 TEs.
CAlll needs to be the guy catching the WR screen and not be the smallest guy in the field tasked to block. He will break a few or more long punts this year.
Boswell is on the Mt. Rushmore of Steelers kickers.
Not enough Jaylen Warren.
But maybe they were keeping it light today coming back from injury.
Hoping for the best with the punter.

Yes. If the Falcons score a TD and get a two pointer you are tied. Being up 8 late with a good defense is a good spot.VeritasSteel wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 9:46 pmYou guys crack me up.

The flip side is picking up the first down doesn’t guarantee a TD.
I’d go for it every time probably until early fourth Q. But when Tomlin decided to go for it he was reckless.
It is classic Tomlin. Super conservative when he should be aggressive and super aggressive when he should be conservative.

Frazier looks legit, has to sort out snap issues but otherwise he had a great first start.
Bijan is that good but Queen needs to play better.
