Austin conceivably would be though since he's been with the team since '19. I don't see anything in the rule that'd require him to have held the D Coordinator position for more than one season, but he would have to be hired to the same role (or head coach) for the new team the way I read it.
2020 RESOLUTION JC-2A, from the Rule; :(ii) The employer-club shall be eligible to receive this Draft choice compensation if:
a. The minority employee hired as a Head Coach or Primary Football Executive has been employed by the employer-club for a minimum of two full seasons; and
b. The minority employee is not the Head Coach or Primary Football Executive of the employer-club and is hired into the same position with the new club. There can be no break in employment between clubs

He also was the number 1 WR that got interfered with last season. That tells me he is getting open.
This offseason the skill players hopefully will get together and work on some drills and timing and practice some things they liked and didn't like from the 2022 season. I am willing to bet Johnson has a really good year next year as long as Kenny stays healthy for the season.

Pickens as the WR1 and demanding safety help or some kind of bracketing will make it really difficult to deal with Johnson. Johnson 1 v 1 is really hard for a lot of NFL corners. His role will look much better next season.

I hear nothing but good things about him from various podcasts and writers. I think he may become Tomlin's new version of DHB. The few passes that were thrown to him this season and pre-season I can only recall 1 drop. I am pretty sure he is just there to block and help on a QB sneak or 3. I will say that Johnson more than likely has better hands than Boykin.beerbrother wrote: ↑Mon Jan 09, 2023 9:45 pmBoykin is their special teams ace but they barely used him at WR.
Are his hands worse than Clank's?

DJ has been working on his game for 2 years and he still drops too many balls (the 5 drops is laughable) and can’t keep both feet down like a real NFL receiver. You don’t think he’s been taught to stop running backwards? He keeps doing it like a blithering idiot.stillthere wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:58 amHe also was the number 1 WR that got interfered with last season. That tells me he is getting open.

I was a fan once. I no longer have any belief in this dude. None.

Thing that made me question those numbers was earlier this season, the first game where Diontae caught an easy pass, then fumbled it as he was tucking it away to head upfield, and then the fumble was overturned into a drop. It was the same game where Diontae came across the middle clean open and Pickett hit him clean and Diontae had the abject Mother of All Drops. He had two other drops in that game alone, but I could see debate about the others.
That time I actually heard how many ‘drops’ he was awarded. Would it be 3? 4?
They gave him 1 for the game. K. Good statting y’all.

I was mistaken. The rule only applies to hiring candidates for head coach / general manager positions. A coordinator hire / poaching wouldn't receive compensation.stillthere wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:51 amCleveland Browns DCSteel Bingo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 11:36 pmDon't believe Flores would be eligible since he's only been in Pittsburgh for one season.Steeldrama wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 10:53 pmI hope Flores, Austin, or both go

But yeah, if Cleveland likes him as a HC option for '24 then better to get him on staff now rather than wait to compete with other teams &/also give a divisional opponent draft compensation if he stays in Pgh another year.
DJ, Clank, Mr. Frustration (or whatever you want to call him) is what he is. He's an outside WR that's ELITE at getting separation against #1 CBs.
He has plenty of warts, too. Number one for me is that he's somewhat mentally weak. He also drops too many balls for my liking. I wasn't crazy about his contract, but WRs contracts took a big pay jump last year, so I can live with his cost, I guess.
Based on his contract/cap hit alone, he's not going anywhere next season. No one is going to take him on in a trade is my educated guess -- nor will the Steelers try to get rid of him.
In a nutshell, he's sort of a one-trick pony. He gets open and catches many/most of the balls that come his way. Him continuing to occupy the D's #1 CB and possible S help will do great things for Picken's year-two development -- not to mention Pickett's.
His drops (more than what's reported, imo) and constant running backwards after the catch (usually costing at least 2-3 yards per catch and some first downs) drive me nuts, for sure.
He's not a true WR1, but he makes a pretty good 1B/2A, I think. If he could clean up his drops and running backwards I think he's a very good 2A. Would I want him if we were paying a true WR1 big bucks (possibly Pickens in 3 years)? Nope, not at his current price.
I HOPE Austin III can come in and be a real guy next year, but his size concerns me a little. He seems well put together, but some small guys are just never able to stay healthy against today's ever-growing, bigger/faster/stronger NFL defenses. Fingers crossed.
From watching a ton of NFL games, some of the FA WRs (at much less cost mind you) I see that could help ease (not completely replace) a removal of DJ would be: Olamide Zaccheaus, DJ Chark, Jamison Crowder, Parris Campbell, Noah Brown, Demarcus Robinson, Ty Hilton, Greg Dortch, Scotty Miller. Again, none of these guys are as elite as DJ is at getting open, but many, for probably 25% of his cost, could help fill that void somewhat, I think.
Ultimately, I hope DJ finds the mental toughness to correct what I see as his fixable shortcomings, and be the best WR1B/2A in the league for us -- over his current remaining 2 year contract, that is.

DJ has lots to good stuff. Gets open, quick, and draws attention. But is absolutely UNclutch. I'd rather him have brain farts when it doesn't matter. Problem is he can't focus and come through when it matters most.

The one player I don't want back is LS Christian Kuntz.
I can't remember a year where our LS was so damn bad at his job. Every snap made it an edge of your seat spectacle. Why aren't more people upset with Kuntz? Well, the number one reason is that our punter and place holder for Boz made some unbelievable catches throughout the year on these wayward snaps from Kuntz.
We had what was it 10 missed field goals this year, take a look at some of the high snaps on those that were missed and even those that were made, you see Harvin stretching out and making great catches and being late getting the ball down and placed.
Even on punts. Remember that one punt that went 17 yards and fans were ready to cut Harvin? You look at the snap on that from Kuntz. Harvin was lucky to catch the damn ball and scramble to punt it off without it getting blocked. After the play you can see Kuntz come over to Harvin to fist bump him for saving his ass, and Harvin slapped away his hand. That stuff was happening all season long, Harvin bailing out Kuntz bad snaps, game after game after game.
Bring in somebody new, or at the very least some real competition.
