Re: Jason Worilds stepping away from football
Cynical bastards if this is legit and he had a come to Jesus or similar Deity moment and decided he'd rather not get his head kicked in for your pleasure if his heart's no longer in it? We needed an assassin and we drafted a choir boy.
If this is a nego ploy the cynicism is deserved and his agent is a scoundrel. If it is legit might explain why Jason lacked the killer instinct last year.

R-O-N wrote:This is a "I didn't get what I think I'm worth" temper tantrum. Nothing more, nothing less. Chalk this up to being another totally wasted draft pick. Can we sign Harrison now, and draft a kid?
Quite possible this is the case...if it is, i surely don't want him now if he later comes back.
Although- no matter whether this is the case or not...because he took a "moral high ground" route in his retirement announcement ("I'm going to work on some good causes").
He tries to back out of that and un-retire, he looks like an idiot.
Since I like to think the best of people, I hope it's true, and he finds fulfillment spending time on his worthy causes...and that they are worthy.

You might want to expand nego to negotiating in that last part. I thought it was a different word when I first skimmed the sentence.

worst case scenario is Worilds signs big deal in training camp with some other team, we get no comp pick

Even second rounders make so much money so fast that the kids that don't party and rain money have no economic incentive to play. Its only love for the game that keeps them playing. That couldn't be said in their father's and grandfather's day.
Hell how many of you make rookie minimum? Is it without looking 300k? I don't even in years that I averaged 60 plus hours a week unless you count crazy money made in the stock market. With the kind of money they make and all the brain damage news only those that love the game and/or money dolts continue to play.

Colbert said the #1 thing they had to address in free agency was the OLB position. With Worilds retiring he better get busy before Sheard, Orakpo and the other decent edge rushers are all gone.

One of my worst fears this offseason was that we'd be tempted into overpaying for Worilds.
It sucks that we potentially lose the comp pick, but I'll take that over signing this guy for way too much money and handcuffing ourselves even further.

I think they really like Sheard and go after him now.
Maybe $5M/per gets it done? I'd take 4 yrs, $20M with $11M guaranteed.

So glad we didn't over pay him.
He's JAG.
As stated above we needed an assassin we got a choir boy.
Glad he's gone if his heart wasn't in it. If it's a tantrum, well fuck him in the goat ass.
Sign Deebo! Sign someone!
Draft Someone!

Agree on all points! Thankfully he didn't just sign for as much as possible then dog it until he was cut like the majority of players would have done. Lack of motivation is probably would kept him from building on the good half season he had the year before.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

Steelers dodged a big bullet here. This is a guy who clearly wasn't interested in playing football any longer. If they signed him to a long term contract I could see him phoning it in for the next 5 years or so. A big "phew!" on this one.
That said, I wish him luck in his future endeavors. Football isn't for everyone and I have no problem with these guys making some great money and getting out with their health still intact.

Jim Wexell has a hard on for Owamagbe Odighizuwa from UCLA. Anyone know anything about him?

While you all wash Ron's insight here, he simple raided my cookie jar in a way, but agree on point #2.
Yes wow, or a ploy to sign later after gauging market and missing camp? Head scratcher

Power guy with good football strength. Position would be 3-4 strong side OLB. Already is very good against the run and can hold the edge. Pass rushing needs some work with additional moves but has very good agility skills. Red flag is that he had hip surgeries on different hips the same year and missed the season in 2013. I like him a lot, but not sure if I like him as high as 1.22 but that's where you would have to take him. Had a great combine and pro day.

for the love of god, sign Orakpo to an incentive-laden deal and be done with it. You're going to draft two guys anyway, due to depth concerns... if Orakpo doesn't stay healthy, he at least bought you placeholder time at a high level until new guys get their wings.
Sheard is a guy who, much like Jarvis Jones, will just be in the way of someone potentially better... filler. Give me Orakpo or let's move on with Deebo and a couple of draft picks + Jordan Zumwalt.

Oh I think this is a calculated decision.
I think he couldn't get what he was asking and has decided to sit and save his body. He either will get what he wants or leave.
I find it hard to believe it's an awakening when he played last year for 9m and was actively shopping until today.
Not sure its a tantrum but I do believe it's a reaction to what he has been. Offered to date. He simpy isn't valued as a top OLB.

Easy decision when you're already filthy rich. Unless Worilds is addicted to Ferraris and gold plated toilets with solid gem handles, he's set for life. If he has a number in mind that makes the beating his body is going to take worth while and that number is not being met, why begrudge him? We need a better pass rusher than Worilds any way.

I don't begrudge it. Just don't believe it's an awakening.
And I think we will see him sign somewhere next year

Sorry Gonzo, didn't mean to imply that YOU had any animus. We'll see if he signs elsewhere. After all, sleep ususally follows being awake.

Maybe he just skimmed the headlines, half asleep or something. One article about Troy, next article about him, or whatever, and he thought it said that the Steelers wanted Worilds to retire.
“ But Brian was the quarterback. He lay on the ground like a sniper had shot him, so they threw me out. It’s big entertainment now, protect the quarterback, $200 to your favorite charity.”
It makes sense if he's not into it. Out of shape people like me play basketball or softball into their 40s, FOR FUN... Nobody plays full speed tackle football for fun much past their early 20s, you gotta be seriously into it, you have to be commited. If he doesn't want to do it, he's got money already, it's not a job you can "put up with" if you're not into it.
...then again, in 3 months, he might get some big offer and come back

When Worilds collide.
Hang out at the beach house with Rashard, Ricky and Jake, not bad.
It's a plus because it forces an aggressive FA move instead of settling for mediocrity.
