Steelers vs Chiefs preseason game thread
Re: Steelers vs Chiefs preseason game thread
I hope they let Hodges do something here. Guys are trying to make the team and this is good situational stuff

That's what I'm talking about. 2 safeties converge to end a completion and force a TO! Love that!

For a 4.4 RB McMillian sures looks like he's running in wet concrete....

Holton is not PS eligible, I don't think.

I know this:
Little Switz better get his ass in gear and he better fucking do some special shit if he wants to make this roster.
He has done SHIT so far this preseason.
Maybe it's time for more ice cream?

maybe not the greatest throw, but thought WR should have attacked the ball and made the catch

I thought I read he was, but I could be wrong. I think he is pretty good at special teams.

If Spencer is your returner, and maybe DJ backs up or grows into the role, then Switz doesn't make the team as the 3rd string returner - he has to make it as a receiver (good fucking luck).

He was on the OAK roster his first two years, then last year was PS based on some obscure eligibility rule. I didn't think there was a scenario a 4th year player could be PS eligible.

I suspect they will setup some sort of controlled evaluation in the next or last preseason game. He hasn’t done much, but I bet he needs help to get some plays drawn up for him. If I was QB fighting for a spot, I would never throw to a small receiver in preseason.
Nice pass defense from Justin Layne there

I mean...Switzer doesn't seem like the type of player you'd make a lock to make the roster.
You'd have to figure the guy would have to show receiving and return skills.
Spencer has been VERY impressive. Diontae Johnson could be your third receiver...AND SOON. Washington and JJSS are your likely starters. They expect big things from Moncrief. Your top backs are Conner and Samuels and Snell isn't getting cut.
I don't know but Switz has to be shitting himself.

He has the Man skills just not very capable playing off. That can be developed later. I think Layne is a Redshirt season candidate. Look for him to have a mysterious injury and IR'd...

They are going to have interesting competitions for the bottom of the roster. I think we are going to have good receivers this year, great depth at OL and Samuels and Connor will make a great pair of RBs. Ben is probably drooling to get in to a preseason game to move this offense.

I don't think he's beating out Eli as a WR. Not sure they'd take Switz over Holton on ST. That's assuming Spencer wins the return job. It's clearly between him and Switzer - DJ is not starting the season as the returner, maybe ever.
Even if you scratch Holton out, why would you put both Switzer and Spencer on the roster? And why would you stash Spencer on PS as a backup returner?
If Spencer wins the return job, all Switz really has going for him is that his cap hit is 1/2 of Rogers. Which even $500k is nothing to sneeze at for a guy who might never get a hat.

Preseason games are so often boring, but these have been fun. There are some fun guys at the bottom of the roster to keep us interested in the fourth quarter.
++ Had to give up the game thread but this was a good stream. I lost sound but in this case not hearing KC home team was a plus.
I concur with others on the QB battle.. Dobbs has flashed the athleticism in both games, drove us down and put the ball in the EZ only to get robbed by the refs. Hodges yet again made some great throws. That TD throw was a thing of beauty. I can make a case for keeping either. I'd like to see them get trade value for one of them soon because neither will get past waivers.
This game though was all about defense and I loved what I saw out of two perennial punching bags here in Burns and DuPree. This is a game we had two TDs taken off the board and we still won comfortably.

How was Dobbs robbed by the refs tonight?
Did the refs force him to make an unbelievably stupid throw inside the 5 yard line?
WTF?

I've always said that SB champs rarely have a losing record in preseason. So the results aren't meaningless. IMO the reason why is it's an indication of depth. For the first time in years it looks like the bottom of the roster has some talent and potential.
Can't say I've been as impressed with the first stringers, though a few key ones have been missing. But the 2nd/3rd/4th stringers have practically dominated these two weeks.
And the pessimist would say WR and TE are not deep, but just very unsettled. I have a feeling Diontae Johnson will be a baller and contributor by mid-year. I also don't think Grimble is an awful #2 - he pushed JJames every year, but may be pushed by Gentry.
So I like what I've seen as far as depth. I've not liked the discipline and readiness I've seen from some starters, but it is just preseason.

The OPI call was utter bullshit. Come on. I know you have a hard on for Hodges, but Dobbs has made plays too.

I also like how the backup QB's move in the pocket, hold the ball, avoid the rush, wait for something to open up, then throw downfield. Clearly they've been learning from Ben.

I'd love to see them get something for Dobbs. I'm not sure what he'd actually get because he's a marginal #2 QB, at best, teams know either him or Hodges will be available for free.
I thought this was his 4th year, but only his 3rd. So it's probably premature to say he's already hit his ceiling, but he made big strides in S2 but this year I'm not seeing much improvement.
Hodges won't clear waivers. If Dobbs isn't your clearcut #2, then the decision should be obvious.

He has. But he's also made more mistakes and missed more throws than the others. And that's the issue.
He pretty clearly isn't better than Rudolph, and isn't even clearly better than Hodges. Easy choice, really.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not going to cry if we lose Dobbs and keep Hodges. Just think the narrative against Dobbs i overblown. And IMO he's faced better talent than Hodges so far.

Fuck Grimble. His showboating, humiliating fumble changed the Denver game and set the stage for the Steelers' collapse last year. He wanted to look tough like Vance; instead he looked like a chump. I hope he gets cut.

I won't disagree. Frankly, I thought Tomlin should have made an example of him and cut him on the spot - playing hard & tough should never trump being stupid.
But I also won't blame last year on that 1 play from Grimble. He has a lot of athleticism and I won't write him off as incapable of being a solid #2. Plus you have Gentry. Too much skill position talent on this team to worry about balls going to TE's not named MacDonald.
