Honestly in all seriousness I think it’s possible the main reason the Steelers keep Rudolph and Trubisky is so people don’t start yelling to replace Lenny

All fair points, but I don't see the answer to this question: what was the downside to letting Mitch play out his deal and him becoming a FA?

He might have decided to resign and for cheaper dollars next offseason
Or the number for back up QB may go up to 7 million a year instead of 5 million a year. It would become a wash. It also allows Mitch to concentrate on one thing, FOOTBALL. He doesn't have to worry about a new job or any of the things that are outside of the team and the team goal of getting Kenny Fucking Pickett ready to be the man here for the next decade as he hoists Lombardi Trophies.

I can’t believe I’m going to type this but I think I’d rather have Mason than Mitch, straight up or at least it’s close. Definitely when considering the cost savings. Now it looks like Mason is collecting his last cool million before fading into NFL oblivion. I don’t see a likely scenario that doesn’t end that way.

I hope Mitch is less shitty moving forward.

Yeah, I think it starts to kick in for real in 2024. He is only like 6 million against the cap this season.

@Scunge
16th in QB spending, that factors in the current 2023 class of rookie QBs??
Only one rookie backup made the top 32, Hooker
I can't imagine Mason signed for much more than say $1.25 million?? Mitch with this new extension probably has a cap hit of $6.5 million and Kenny is just under $3.2 million.

Our QB room, all three QBs have a collective cap hit of $11million. That is what, 4.8% of our cap? B2B, you are telling me that is middle of the road in the NFL?? I find that hard to believe.

I look at so many other teams and they are all easily 25, 30, 40 million in cap hits for their QB rooms.
For example, once Will Levis signs his contract, you take him, Malik Willis and Ryan Tannehill and that is approaching $40 million cap hit for the Titans in 2023
You may be factoring in avg cap hit vs how much there is in 2023. This is what Spotrac says:

Not paying a franchise QB doesn't justify overpaying the backups. That's stupid, and it wastes money that could be used to upgrade players that can make a real difference elsewhere.

Those numbers seem mostly reasonable, but they don’t account for the Trubisky restructure, and they don’t include dead cap hits. E.g., Aaron Rodgers counts for a combined $42M against the cap this season between the packers and Jets, but that list only counts him as a total of $1M cap hit between them. And the Packers are supposed to be one of the only teams that will still be below us post-restructure.

We STILL have one of the cheapest QB rooms in all of football.
16th in QB spending in the NFL, so I'd call that more average.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/positional/breakdown/

spotrac has at least 20 teams spending more in that room than what the Steelers will be after they update Trubisky's numbers.

Atlanta - I would like Taylor Heineke to hold the same position with Pittsburgh that Trubisky or Rudolph currently hold.
Carolina - Rookie. I would not mind Matt Corral as the 3rd string guy over Mason but I want the team focusing on Kenny's development for now.
Chicago - Elite athlete, can the team surround him with talent?
Green Bay - Love train (nobody has a clue what he can or cannot do as a leader and starter)
Houston - Rookie
Indianapolis - Rookie
LA Chargers - Stud QB, that team seems snake bit always seem to be able to fuck up a win (Very Pittsburgh in that)
New England - Jones is alright same with Zappe but I guess we will have to see if either can make real strides
New York Jets - Renting Aaron for a year or two.
Philadelphia - Stud QB.
Tampa Bay - Baker, meh averages a good game a month.
Washington - I would like Jacoby Brisset to hold the same position as Mitch or Mason on the Steelers roster.

Those are the teams that are spending less at QB than Pittsburgh right now. I am not sure what the #1 & #2 overall picks numbers will add to those totals. Eagles and Chargers are in a good spot Chicago could be in a good spot. The Jets are pushing the chips in at the table and will be back to rebuild in 2 years with a new QB unless they just want to rent out QBs at the end of their career's. The rest of the teams listed I see Pittsburgh as being in a significantly better position than already.
It isn't the average year for Trubs that counts toward this. It's the 2023 number, which will be higher than this. They'll be right around 16th.

Like I said, though, the extension won't kick in until next year, so his cap hit this year is what's used.

i don’t think this is true. I expect that the terms will overwrite his current 2023, and drop his 2023 cap number (with his 2023 salary largely converted to bonus).

Look, they will likely pay Trubisky for the entire 3 years. That's how they do business. But this makes him more tradeable, or he probably has a no trade clause? People are really reaching to justify this.

Bottom line: $16M+ ito a guy that is only marginally better than the other guy making vet min.

Comparing salaries for the QB room is apples-to-oranges. They just spent $16M on Trubisky that will never be spent elsewhere to improve the team. And that's the indisputable bottom-line.

Per Dulac:

Trubisky’s three-year deal is worth $19.65 million with $8 million guaranteed. The $8 million, which comes in the form of a $6.92 million signing bonus and a veteran minimum salary of $1.08 million in 2023, represents what he was originally due in salary this season.

Trubisky will earn $5.25 million in salary and roster bonus in 2024 and $6.4 million in salary and roster bonus in 2025. He can earn an additional $14.5 million in incentives in the final two years of his contract, but most of the incentives are based on amount of playing time and performance.

Mason Rudolph was re-signed to a one-year deal for $1.08 million
________________________________________________________________________

So, for those keeping track, our '23 QB room cap hit will be $10,288,917. With our future FQB(?) on his rookie deal, I was hoping we would spend ~$10M (or less) on the the '23 QB room. It appears to be very close to that; I'll take it.

Basically they gave Mitch an additional $8M reasons to stick around and play back up to KP8 the next two years. The new contract gives us ~$4,6M of extra cap space this year, while giving us the option of paying Mitch about $6M next year or cutting him (after this year) with a dead cap hit of ~$4.6M (they could trade him, as well). Not bad, I guess. I think I'd rather have Brissett, Dalton, Bridgewater, or maybe Minshew, but that's about it, I guess.

Now, who do we spend that $4.6M of new cap space on?

Good stuff.

Looks like it's a glorified one year deal that basically guaranteed his money for this season, opened up $4.6M in cap room which if unused we can carry over to next season, and means he can be cut as early as after this season. Big whoop. Khan's got this.

No, his $8M salary was not guaranteed. Basically a 3-yr, $19.65M deal. $19.65M is what they would have saved cutting him.

If they didn't cut him this year, what makes you think they're cutting him next year when he's "even cheaper  "?

the 8 million was his base salary the only way that goes away is if they cut him before the season and the restructure. That money was as good any guarantee. It was just going to be given out on a game check basis of about 400-500 thousand a game in 2023.

That's not the point. The point is they could have saved $8M if they cut him and went with Rudolph as the backup. This doesn't cost them "$12M" it costs them $20M.

There's no way to sugarcoat this - the Steelers will spend at least $19.65M of current and future cap space on Mitch Trubisky.

this deal added no incentive whatsoever for the steelers to keep trubisky past 2023, and added no extra cost for cutting him this coming february.

All it did was guarantee his 2023 salary in exchange for a lower cap hit and cheaper team options for 2024 and 2025.

If your point is that you were hoping Trubisky would get cut before the 2023 season, i agree that dream is officially dead now. But it should have already been dead when Rooney went on record saying “we’re keeping Trubisky” months ago.

Sure. But that doesn't change the math. They could have cut him, instead they chose to extend him costing them $19.65M in current and future cap space.

You're not following, so I'll explain it one more time: The Steelers COULD have cut Trubisky today, but instead extended him. That is a $19.65M difference. No fuzzy math or bullshit - that's A FACT. They did not do this deal to create cap space or spread his hit over two years.

Now, the reality is PIT rarely cuts guys after giving them an extension, and that almost never happens on a short FA deal. So, fair, they were never cutting him this year to save that $8M. But that STILL means they extended another $11.65M to him that they are about 99% likely to play. And if Pickett blows his knew out in the first half of the year, they'll pay Mitch at least another $5M just to chase NHALS.

This is a shitty deal for the team and a waste of good cap space. No one even likes Trubisky; it's bizarre how people are defending this deal.

And again…..you wanna keep Trubisky on the roster ? Fine …..let Rudolph walk and roll the dice on a QB that might be better

You wanna keep Rudolph ? Fine…..unload Trubisky

But keeping both and committing more money than you need to really doesn’t seem like you care much about trying to improve the roster

I get that you don't want that to be the point but as has been said in this thread, it is in the best interest of the current QB that he be surrounded in a friendly environment while he learns to be the man. I get that on paper money is money but they are doing more than looking at numbers as an organization. They are trying to figure out if they have a QB that is going to be the man. If he is not going to be the man then your 3rd string QB may as well be me. We are not winning shit. Allowing for KP8 to be in a good position to succeed cost the team an extra 10 million dollars over 2 or 3 years then you do it. If KP8 is Baker Mayfield then the #2 and #3 QB the next 2 years doesn't mean shit. it just means that you either spent 10 million this year on Mitch T or we spend 19 million in the next 3 years or less on #10 and we are starting from scratch as we draft a new 1st round QB in 2 years and whatever money you save today means shit when you have a new rookie QB. Sorry if that sounds terse but those is tha fax.

this deal added no incentive whatsoever for the steelers to keep trubisky past 2023, and added no extra cost for cutting him this coming february.

All it did was guarantee his 2023 salary in exchange for a lower cap hit and cheaper team options for 2024 and 2025.

🦍🦍🦍🏈

And again…..you wanna keep Trubisky on the roster ? Fine …..let Rudolph walk and roll the dice on a QB that might be better

You wanna keep Rudolph ? Fine…..unload Trubisky

But keeping both and committing more money than you need to really doesn’t seem like you care much about trying to improve the roster
I officially put my name into the mix for the league minimum to be the #3 QB for the Pixburg Stillers. The only player more qualified than me to start a game next year is Devlin Hodges.

Salary cap fixed and from most account we just upgraded the
#3 QB. (I am super good at the fooseballs( FYI)).

I will say again that the team wants to nurture and grow the KP8 thing and if he sucks after this year then cut all the QB's and start over and guess what and extra 4 million this year would mean absolutely nothing. just slinging the facts. See how easy that was to understand. You can go ahead and trade Watt and Harris and Pickens and every other player you want so you can play in a mock draft contest but that is not building a fooseball team fool off devils. Superb-Owl bound Pixburg Stillers allday 'murriiccaa fuckyeah.
