Steelers rookie report

Post by Legacy User » Mon Aug 04, 2014 5:09 pm

I know we have a training camp thread but it's 50+ pages and I can't be bothered to wade through all of it

Basically how are the rookies doing?

- Shaz: I'm hearing good things about him...that he'll start, that he's using his speed well and making the right reads
- Tuitt: haven't heard much
- Archer: haven't heard much...except that he outran Timmons. How are his receiving abilities looking
- Bryant: heard some good things, but where is he on the depth chart

everyone else - anyone going to make the roster?

Thanks in advance.

All I've heard (from reading here):

Shaz will start. Looks good physically, but still makes some mental mistakes (play recog, etc).
Tuitt looks strong, in shape, and could be on the cusp of cracking starting lineup
Archer is as fast as advertised. Starting kick returner.
Bryant has shown flashes both positive and negative. Raw with a ton of upside, as expected. Has had 1 or 2 drops so far.
Mccullers is huge, stout. Has trouble shedding blocks at this point. Poor endurance. But when he's going 100%, he's a monster.
Shaq has had a similar camp to Bryant. Some great days, some poor days. Still clearly a rookie, but potential is there.

Shazier will have issues with iso's, runs at him, anytime he is asked to make an athletic defined play he will excel. He is athletic and very smooth.

Tuitt is a physical stout player who has to improve his ability to disengage from blocks. He may never be a JJ Watt type he will be at least Tyson Jackson.

Archer is fast quick all that...I need to see him take contact

Bryant like any rookie is making mental errors...Skills wise...Yeah I think we may have find something. The thing is every mistake Bryant makes is under the microscope. He is on the outside and the coaching staff is letting him know about it..The Steelers coaches believe they found something special in Bryant.

Mount Washington McCullers- Everything looks a little slower...A little oafish coming from a large massive man. McCullers sits and wins...McCullers also has the ability to walk linemen at times...I think the Steelers may have found a decent player...I don't think he will ever be quicker or leaner...I think he will learn more about blocking schemes and quarterback tendencies....Tipped balls...Challenging 3 steps drops with his length...McCullers is actually a bright player...He is football smart

Richardson scares me.

Wing is going to take the punting job.

I have positive feelings about camp so far...Need to see live bullets being fired to make any conclusions.

From a special teams perspective, could we see McCullers swat some FG's or XP's this season with his height and arm length he may be a threat to block anything beyond a 40 yard attempt.

I spent the weekend in the Laurel Highlands and made it down to Latrobe on Saturday and Sunday. For the past 10 years I went to camp I took notes and reported what I saw here. This year I didn't bother. There are enough guys on twitter documenting every play and I wanted to just sit back and enjoy the practices with my son who is now old enough to go.

Here is my quick take on the rookies and a few vets:

Shazier was more impressive than I thought he'd be. His pass rush ability was impressive and he got his hands on some balls in coverage than few LBs in the NFL could have. I'll echo FC's sentiment about plays run right at him. That will probably be an issue just like it was at OSU. Still, he clearly looked like a 1st round pick. Very explosive pass rushing, in pursuit, and in coverage. He was much better diagnosing and reading plays in camp than I remember from his college games, but of course we're talkin bout practice here. I'll be happy to eat my words on Shazier this year if he keeps it up.

Tuitt fires off the ball and moves like a 270 pound edge rusher in a 310 pound body. If he can anchor the run like Tyson Jackson I'll take it, but he's already light years ahead of him as a penetrating force and pass rusher. I'd compare him favorably to Cam Heyward of last year, which is impressive since it took Heyward 3 years to get to that point. This kid is the real deal. Nickle Packages with Heyward/Tuitt are going to be fun! I think we'll look back in a few years and wonder how he fell out of the 1st round.

Archer is ridiculous. If you saw his college highlight tapes, he is now doing that sort of thing to Pro Bowl caliber defenders. if they can get this kid the ball in space a few times a game, I think he can change the course of games. He'll be a great toy until they break him.

Bryant had a nice weekend. I haven't seen a WR in a Steelers uniform since Plaxico circa 2004 with the ability to highpoint balls like this kid. If you want somebody to stretch the field vertically, he can do that well. If you want somebody to run a fade in the endzone, he can do that. if you want somebody to seamlessly run a quick slant or quick timing route, he'll probably fuck that up. He is a little clumsy in and out of his breaks, especially when compared to super smurfs Brown, Wheaton, and Moore. Bryant's game is go deep, jump high. If they are smart enough to work him in situationally, he'll be another big play threat.

Wes Johnson, Shaq Richardson did nothing to stand out to me worth noting. All of the young RBs look like garbage. I'd be hard pressed to find one that I thought deserved to be given a roster spot as the 4th RB after Bell, Blount, Archer.

As far as the vets go, Jerrvis didn't give me the warm and fuzzies. If he got stronger in the offseason it didn't show. Few OLBs got pancaked in pass rush drills, but he did a few times by TE's.

Antwon Blake looks like a real nice find. He was in the hip pocket of everyone he covered and looked real fluid and quick. I kow he's short but he looks to have a very solid build to him.

The starting O-line looked really good. They were able to move bodies and run the ball pretty well. It's hard to single out any one guy when they all seemed to play pretty well. The depth guys didn't fare so well. Adams looked as clumsy as last year. Elkins is AQ Shipley 2.0. Will Simmons is a fat body but has some real nasty to his game.

Markus Wheaton is going to make people forget Emmanuel Sanders and Mike Wallace by the end of this season. That kid is so smooth and can run. I never saw him miss a catchable ball either.

Wish we could do this.

Base
Lolb - lde - nt - rde
Worilds -tuitt - mclendon - heyward

Slb - ilb - wlb
Shazier - timmons - shamarko

Dbs - whatever

For shaq, was he getting beat a lot? Hearing very little either way, but cbs tend to be exciting when they suck.

This is my favorite part of your analysis, Perch.

Wheaton doens't need to be a Pro Bowler. But if he can be good enough to take pressure off AB and make some plays of his own, I think our WR core, and offense, will be better than most people think.

This pretty much meshes with what I saw. I might head up tomorrow and/or Thursday for a while if I can swing it.

Just please consider the substance before you start vaguely tweeting about Rob Blanchflower.

Sorry, I could not help myself. I'll stop now.

Thanks for the report Perch. Any thoughts on V. Williams, Terence Garvin, Shamarko Thomas?

Great news on Wheaton to be sure and thanks Perch for the report.

The Jervis shit scares me.

Big-time.

Thanks for the report, Perch. If Wheaton can be a difference maker, this can be a fun offense.
