SteelerFury GM/Owner's Coaching Staff (Off Season Build)
Alright you SteelerFury armchair (overly opinionated), yinzer, half snowflake, mostly Tomlin, Butler, Danny Smith hating self proclaimed GMs & Owners; How would you make the most of the coaching staff between now and the draft, if in fact, you were in charge???
I'm gonna start and try to fix it, as it is this season, but feel free to make believe and "fire & hire" as you see fit.
It appears Butler, Smith & Tomlin are staying and they have who they think are their RB coach and an extra addition to the staff. So that leaves only a few vacancies.
- First, and I'm not sure how this is going to go over, BUT I'm hoping your ALL on board with me and we start the National Media/Social Media rumor; """TONY ROMO TO THE STEELERS""" hired as a coach/advisor. Call hm what you want; Quarterback Coach, Assistant Offensive Coordinator, Assistant Head Coach, Time & Challenge Coordinator. Hell, call him the equipment mgr. But, hire him now, before the networks start their bidding war for him. Hire him & put him on the sidelines &/or up in the booth to help Tomlin & his band of coordinators.
I've been thinking; what this team needs is Tomlin's duties bumped/pushed/nudged/shifted more toward a manager and less as coach. We need a Patriots Ernie Adams, or whatever the hell his name is, behind the scenes brain. I couldn't come up with a name to be our own Ernie Adams until the Pats/K.C. game. I'm sorry, but Romo impressed me. He was calling out plays, schemes, and counters to those plays and schemes. Not only that he was explaining them and explaining when and why they were used. He wasn't doing this for just anybody. He was doing this to the perceived BEST FUCKING coach alive. He might be the only one in the football world that can read Bellichik and Ernie's mind like that. If he is as good as he appears when it comes to deep Xs & Os football knowledge; imagine him consulting Ben on the sidelines between possessions. Coordinating with Fictner between plays. Running game clock and challenge decisions from the booth during games consulting with Tomlin. I'm not 100% positive he can be "that guy", BUT hes the best I got.
- Second I start at Kevin Greene for Linebacker coach. I look far and wide for ANYONE better than Greene. And by better, I don't mean more experienced and more ornery. I mean, more a technique guru, more brains, more of an innovator. If I can't find that guy that's better than Greene, I go all out and try to grab Greene.
- The same goes for Faneca as Offensive Line assistant. We need a Munchak in training at the very lest and its NOW been proven we SHOULD ALWAYS have a Munchak type for the Offensive line. The job is that important. Hunt high & low for someone better than Faneca. If that guy isn't out there, go all in for Faneca.
My fix for the 2019 season coaching staff:
Romo - Offensive Advisor/Assistant
Greene - Linebacker Coach
Faneca - Assistant O-Line Coach
If you don't agree; who's your picks for our Ernie Adams and/or how do you fix this coaching staff for 2019 and into the future???

I agree with everything you said and who to bring in. I think Tomlin's duties need to be more limited and simplified. If the Rooney's want to keep Butler, then they need to tell Tomlin to keep his fucking hands off the defense, period. That is going to be the only true way they can evaluate his effectiveness. Right now, it is too blurred from Tomlin's meddling. Same is true on offence. Let Fitchner run the whole damn show with no input from Tomlin. I think Fitch has a more pedal to the metal philosophy but has to go conservative because of Tomlin. I know Ben enjoys scoring 50 points on any team and I bet the defense would be more than happy about it as well. It takes a lot of pressure off them! Make Tomlin strictly a personal type guy, but sit down and create a list of expectations and do's and don'ts for him to follow as he's proven that he isn't good on his own! Tomlin will either tow the line or want out - either way, the Steelers win. If success comes, Tomlin will look great, if it doesn't, you move on and find another HC, OC, and DC. Start the rebuild! Oh, and get a damn QB coach for the young guys. If Rudolph is the future, he's going to need help getting there.

Excellent/best point that I forgot to mention. The young arms we have now and the new Ben whoever that is; finding and developing him. I feel Romo would be great for that reason too. Get it out there to the twitterverse; """TONY ROMO hired by the STEELERS"""

I like your thoughts but isn't Greene still part on the Jets?

As far as I know he is, but they changed head coaches. Is his rights still owned by them? Do they still want him? Does the new coach have him in his plans? Would Greene leave them for the Steelers if he was offered? I at least pursue him, if hes the best out there, and see what happens.

Oh i agree trying to get Greene and i still wish they would have added him a few years ago. I also been saying that since coach MM had Starett as his assistant so now that he the head OL coach they really need to get him one. I also think Allan would be the ideal choice think this move might happen after the HOF announcement.

Yes, maybe Jimmy Johnson will come out of retirement to coach the Linebackers..... News flash. Being part of the Steelers in not the pinnacle of every player or coach nationwide. Romo would literally laugh his ass off if he was offered the QB coach position.

Has Faneca ever coached anything...anywhere?
You know, not every ex-player has the desire to be a coach...or the ability.

If I'm hiring Romo, it's as a defensive consultant.

Can't remember at this moment but they brought in a LB'ing coach 'consultant' before the cheats game. I'd retain his services if possible. I still believe they need a QB coach. Not sure who would be the best candidate at this point. I'm sure there are candidates lined up for a shot.

Didn't the Steelers hire a game/clock management challenge guy?

Why is Tomlin's personally handling the defense "meddling"? It's his team and his defense.

I totally agree. Tomlin has my full support if he wants to be more hands on, wants to call the plays, whatever. If and when the defense fails, yet again, then Rooney will have nobody left to fire but Tomlin.
The thing I don't understand with Tomlin is why keep the 3-4?? You are a Tony Dungy disciple, you coached under the 4-3 system in Tampa Bay, when you went to Minnesota to be their DC you coached a 4-3. Dick LeBeau is gone now, has been gone for years now, why keep a 3-4 defense that you are uncomfortable with?? That does not match up with what you have expertise in??
Why draft a Javon Hargrave who is clearly a Warren Sapp 4-3 DT and play him as a 3-4 NT??

Because the Rooneys.
They did not want to rock the boat and if the 3-4 is good enough for Chuck Noll it is good enough for Tomlin.

Tomlin is the man in charge yes. But... If Tomlin is making decisions for the defense that is contrary to Butler's, then it might be a problem. Remember we heard a couple different times that the Steeler's D was in two different formations at once on the field. Can you tell me how that happens when the man with the green dot yells a formation for everyone? Here's my take - the Rooneys will never know how much of an affect Butler will have at his job if Tomlin continuously overrides decisions. You can't evaluate someone for a job if they only are allowed to do the job part of the time. I would love to know who was calling the shots predominantly during our 6 game win streak vs who was calling much of the D during our collapse, likewise at the end of last year as well. I know that we will never know, but tidbits have been thrown out there suggesting that Tomlin was more in control at the end of the season than beginning or midway. If Tomlin would leave Butler to do his job, then we would see what Butler's got and whether he needs replaced. Tomlin should have input into the game plan in preparation for the game, but then leave to his coordinator to do the job and make any adjustments.Again, just my opinion. . For me, it's business management 101.

It is funny, alanac98, but that is the same argument I have had for years in regards to Tomlin.
Rooney is the man in charge yes. But... if Rooney is making decisions for the team that is contrary to Tomlin's, then it might be a problem. Like how Tomlin did not want to make any changes to the coaching staff and then Rooney holds a press conference and announces that Bruce Arians is 'retiring'.
Maybe Rooney is the one who is forcing the 3-4 defense on Tomlin. We have no idea of knowing either way.
With Tomlin, I have always wondered what he could do if he enjoyed the same power and authority that Cowher and Noll had. What if Tomlin had installed a 4-3 defense right after Dick LeBeau left?? We would have finished up the 4th year of playing in that 4-3 defense!!! 2015-2018. 4 years and we would be entering the 5th year. Any bumps or transitions would be long gone by now.
The greatest problem that I see, is that for whatever reason, they are trying to keep the 3-4 defense but don't know how to make it work in today's NFL. The players that they have for the 3-4 defense are not really as suitable to play in sub package defenses either. I see Rooney not allowing Tomlin to have free reign on defense, to truly make the defense as he wants it, to be the biggest problem.
If I am Tomlin I would say screw it and start to implement the 4-3 that I know and at least have a fighting chance. Trying to prop up this old 3-4, with the leaky roof, bad foundation and termites is a lost cause. Take us back to the future and return to the 4-3 and draft players and pursue free agents accordingly. With the hiring of Teryl Austin, here is yet another 4-3 coach. Just do it already, make the switch.

I totally agree. Part of the problem ( IMHO) is the scouts and the coaches are not aligned with players. Because they have had Mitchell for so long the scouts know EXACTLY what to look for in a 3-4 DE. 6'5 300+ lbs. I think there is a disagreement or some major issue with CBs.
Here is an interesting article by a Professor at Wharton who was in a NFL FO
https://behavioralscientist.org/how-to- ... nfl-draft/
#1: Understand Your Goal
I once worked for an NFL team that was much more successful drafting players one side of the ball than the other. One year we surveyed the staff about the kind of player they wanted to acquire at a particular position. The position was on the side they struggled with, and we discovered there was zero consensus on the type of player to pursue. Given the range of opinions, the group average was meaningless. No wonder they had trouble drafting the right guys!
To paraphrase Lewis Carroll, if you don’t know where you’re going, any road will get you there. An easy way to flub a hire from the beginning is to skip asking exactly what it is you’re looking for. People often don’t understand their decision objectives, but the most successful sports teams are clear about their goal and don’t stray from the principles and attributes they’ve established.
Sound familiar?

Tony is loyal to the Jones family, doubtful he'd enlist with another franchise. He made sure Jerry, Steven & Charlotte were ok with him moving into the booth. Wouldn't surprise if Tony has a piece of some of the Jones family investments. Like other franchises in several major sports they are investing in youth talent assessment / training programs, blow your mind analytical stuff. W/o any knowledge except known trends I doubt that Rooney is leading his team into that realm. As example, Man United, T Maple Leafs, D Cowboys are tracking young talent, assessing performance, studying how to enhance performance. The Steelers? They needed to relieve its HC from managing the game clock, real 21st century stuff.

I thought the Romo coaching talk was sarcastic.
So he would take a HUGE pay cut just to be some lowly assistant coach? Yeah, okay.

First order of business would seem to be to simply make sure everyone is on the same page.
If Butler and Tomlin are clashing philosophically, Butler should be gone and a coordinator capable of sharing Tomlins vision should be brought in.
If Rooney and Tomlin are clashing, thats on Rooney. If hes going to nane the guy head coach hes got to give him the latitude to run his team and personnel in whatever manner Tomlin sees fit.
Basically, til Tomlin is gone the whole organization should be aligned with his expertise and his vision.
Whether he should be gone or not is a different topic.

Fich did a good job this year. How do we even know Romo would be a good coach?
