Fifth Team Session
1. Dobbs playaction. Ugly overthrow over McDonald in the left flat. Oof.
2. Dobbs again fakes the handoff. Wants JuJu down the seam but Devin Bush steps in front. Rookie should’ve had the pick but drops the pass.
3. Conner short toss right. Hilton flew in from his nickel spot. Don’t have the exact yards gained but it was minimal, if any.
4. Moncrief/Washington on the outside with JuJu aligned in the slot. Switzer in the backfield. Screen right to McDonald with Feiler leading the charge. Gain of seven.
5. Trey Griffey/Tevin Jones on the outside with Diontae Spencer in the slot. Someone screwed up here. Botched exchange between Dobbs and Ralph Webb. Ball ends up on the turf. Spencer, who was running an end around, fell on it for a 4/5 yard loss. Either it was supposed to be a playfake and Webb tried to grab the ball or the QB/RB just had a bad exchange.
6. Samuels up the middle. No gain, Hooks and McCullers clogging things up. Gentry fell on his butt at the end. Burns got hit, perhaps below the belt, and spent the next couple plays on one knee on the sideline.
7. Checkdown from Rudolph for Trey Edmunds left side. Marcus Allen runs him out. Five yard reception.
8. Webb burst up the middle. Spillane scraped over the top. Run of five.
9. Dobbs throw to Smith-Schuster over the middle is low and at his back foot. Incomplete. One of the defensive linemen jumped up and though I don’t believe got a hand on the throw, may have impacted Dobbs’ vision.
10. David DeCastro pulls right to left and logs Vince Williams inside. Edmunds and Nelson tag up Snell. Gain of six. Snell, like usual, runs the play out into the end zone.
11. Dobbs playaction. Wants Scotland-Williamson down the right seam but incomplete. Burns hung tough on the coverage.
12. Edmunds carry right side. Sayles worked down the line to string this one out. Craig got penetration from his DT spot. Gain of three.
13. Malik Williams finds a lane and shows some burst. Seven yard run up the middle.
14. Screen right side from Hodges to Travon McMillan. Craig a step late to breaking the throw up. McMillan finds some grass and highsteps his way to try to make Gilbert III miss. Doesn’t happen but still a pickup of eight.
15. Samuels carry up the middle. Not much happening. Gain of two. One coach yelled for guys to “get off the block.”
Final Thoughts
– Offense got the better of the defense in the run session. Defense won the rest of the day.
– Still seeing Josh Dobbs struggle. Some of the basic accuracy is just amiss. Missing more than he should and he’s gotta start picking things up. Lots of reps today with Ben out and he didn’t take advantage.
– Running backs showing some bust. Line did a nice job to clear the lane but Snell, Webb, and Williams showed the foot speed to turn and win the corner.
– Nice to see Diontae Johnson show up a little more today with his two touchdowns in seven shots.
– Like seeing Diontae Spencer’s speed on display but the diving catch over the middle on Layne was even more impressive. That was a football play. Nice start for him but be warned, receivers have gone down this path before only to fade at the end (see Damoun Patterson last year).
– Players who did well in backs on backers: Benny Snell (like his anchor, toughness, strength), Ola Adeniyi (almost no one could block him) Robert Spillane (had some tasty matchups vs CSW) while Gentry, CSW, and Williams had their issues.
– Adeniyi with a great start to camp. Hawkins has won a couple battles when he gets his hands on him and wins early with power but if Adeniyi gets even with him around the edge? Game. Over. Adeniyi might be the real deal and I’m pretty pumped about it.
– Fred Johnson and Derwin Gray have great size and strength. Johnson was particularly impressive in OL/DL. Nice to be able to watch that unit closely for the first time all camp. Big guy but can move and sinks low into his hips. Depth here is excellent.
– Similar for the defensive linemen. You can see some burst with Isaiah Buggs off the ball. Liked to see that from the rook.
– DBs all willing to tackle. Haden, Nelson, Burns, Layne, Waters with run stops today.
– Brian Allen didn’t have his best day in one on one or team drills. First day of camp has still been his best.
