But more confidence than he deserves.

Makes total sense.

You dont wanna chase Ben away with a new HC but you dont want to commit to Tomlin after Ben is done unless he wins something in the next two years.

Good move.

At the end of the day, Ben's loyalty is to blame for not having more rings.

And Ben also has a hand in letting some of those self-centered assholes hurt the team.

Solid point

I hate they extended him, but if this contract length isn't a shot across the bow I'm not sure what is

We do what we fuckin' do. Not a surprise from this clown ownership. Yeah, we're just fine with no losing seasons but no Super Bowl Championships. Of yeah, sorry, he did make it over a decade ago. Yee haw!

I think the one year extension is a good move. Don't want him to be a lame duck, don't want to lose him if he coaches up a great team this year and holds it against you that you didn't believe in him... but if he fails, then you're not on the hook for more.

A total off-the-cuff reaction to this comment is that it would seem to run against the narrative that Rooney totally neutered Ben after the "troubles." Ben having that kind of organizational pull and Rooney putting Ben in his place seems in tension to me.

Yeah, that seat would seem finally to be heating up.

Things have changed. 2010 is a loooooooooooong time ago. Maybe they realized they saddled him with Todd Haley and ruined a good portion of his career?

No surprise, we do what we do. Isn’t like he’s been terrible either. Has room for improvement of course.

Dude...this is a "prove it" extension.

It's Rooney's shot across Tomlin's bow.

Yes or no. If Steelers make another Super Bowl and lose or lose another AFCC do you still want him gone? Will the only thing that is agreeable for him staying like another five years a 7th Lombardi?

Well, that depends. Does Tomlin sign off on an utterly imbecilic gameplan in the AFCC like in '17? Does a Blake Bortles run up 52 points on the defense? If so, I'll want him fired because I've seen it too many times before and it shows Tomlin is a Seinfeld character.

If the Steelers make the SB and lose, no way do I fire him.

Maybe.

There's one more way of looking at this.

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard; "Do you know how quickly Mike Tomlin would have another job if the Steelers let him go?" Not just from ESPN, etc. but from most fans too.

The league-wide respect and reverence for this imbecile is MASSIVE. Tomlin himself may not want to tie himself to a Steelers team with no Roethlisberger (Tomlin knows how quickly he'd be exposed as a fucking empty-headed twat).

I could be giving Tomlin too much credit for having a working brain, but he might have a good agent.

If that agent is smart, he'll get Tomlin out of Pittsburgh just in time, when #7 hangs 'em up.

His younger son is a senior. He may be ready to move on, get into the media and see his boys play college ball. He is set for life money wise, and can coach wherever he wants.

It will be interesting to see if the option year is controlled by the Steelers or Tomlin.

Despite the “We do what we do” attitude and maybe because of it, this feels like a Shot Across the Bow from the Steelers to Tomlin for me.

Whether Tomlin would be picked up quickly by another team or not, does anyone on this board think he would get the same kind of job security elsewhere that he has had with the Steelers? Only four coaches have been with their team more than 10 years, Billy B at 19, Tomlin & Payton at 12 and Harbaugh at 11 (amazingly the Cowboys have also kept Garrett for 9 years despite wasting great opportunities over and over again).

His stability with the Steelers is partially because of the “no losing seasons” thing but is impacted as much of not more by the team’s pride in being able to say “Only 3 coaches in 50 years” Nowhere else would that happen (except maybe in Cincy where they kept Lewis wayyyyyyyy longer than was reasonable…. But yuck, that’s in Ohia).

Add in the fan support and the history of the Steelers and I’d be shocked if Tomlin chose to leave on his own unless he retires when Ben does (which would probably be his best move).

From my perspective this was the right move - they always extend at two years out but this clearly says they need him to do better in order to keep his cushy job.

Wow. I'm stunned. This thread is relatively mild in it's tomlin hatred. But the usual suspects haven't shown up yet.

What I want to see is tomlin over delivery. He’s been under delivering for about the last 8 seasons straight. He’s capable of good coaching. We’ve seen it a few times.

There are about 10 reasons why I’m losing interest in the nfl and tomlin comes in right around two.

Shot across the bow, eh?

I'm sure most people here would LOVE to have a year like Tomlin did last year, have two of your best people flip out and leave....and be rewarded with an extension.

https://www.steelers.com/news/steelers- ... s-contract

“I am pleased to announce we have extended Mike Tomlin’s contract through the 2021 season,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “Mike is one of the most successful head coaches in the National Football League, and we are confident in his leadership to continue to lead our team as we pursue our goal of winning another championship.”

The guys under contract til 2021.
Yep...shot across the bow. Or is it bowel?

Obviously comment threads on the internets are not exactly a well of wisdom, but it’s amusing to see all of the LOLing by Pats fans and others at the extension. I liked these two:

The Patriots are now quivering in the corner with this news.

The Steelers would also like to announce that we have postponed our attempts to win a seventh Super Bowl until at least the 2022 season.
