Steelers Jaguars series bits

Post by actionsteel1 » Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:10 pm

These are some stats and bits I dug up about this unusual series.

regular season
Pittsburgh is 12-12 Overall, 8-15-1 ATS, and 7-16-1 Over/Under in these games.

regular season-post season
Pittsburgh is 12-14 Overall, 9-16-1 ATS, and 9-16-1 Over/Under in these games.
[didn't know we lost TWO PO games to them]

Fred Taylor November 19, 2000.
Taylor, rushed for 234 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries – setting a record for yards in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the most yards ever by an opponent in Three Rivers Stadium.[pretty sure though the
steelers won the next meeting and held Taylor to very few yards]

But this following article by Bob Labrioli sums it up perfectly.

I might add though, the weather is expected to be perfect and the Steelers are certainly aware of this stuff.

I rarely if ever listen to any press conferences or spots on TV of coaches, but I am glad I saw this one on ESPN. Tomlin was spot on.

I was at that first Steelers Jags game. My neighbor's father owned a car dealership and he had season tickets so we sat club side. I only say that because I remember having a good seat watching Neil rolling to his right (towards the Jacksonville bench) and try to pass on fourth down when he could have literally walked to get the first. Team played like they were stuck in mud until the 4th quarter. All the Jags fans that were so nice before the game turned into ass holes by the end of it.

I was there when Spike got his nickname and a huge Thunderstorm came up. I remember sitting there in the rain with the game being a blowout after 4 TOs. I didn't leave and the girlfriend asked why? I said you don't run out on the team sometimes you have to sit there and take it.

The 2002 was a game we dominated but only won by 2. Kordell gave up an INT and made it close.

The problem with that team is it is a mirror image of what we were before Ben came along. A run first plodding offense that puts it on the defense to hold teams under 20 points.

I also remember that 1st game. Besides everything else that went wrong, Greg Lloyd was injured . I did not remember that it was a season ending injury.

The article by Bob Labrioli is worth reading. CAUTION: Read Labriola's article at your own risk. :D It's in the op.

The Jags irritate me because I think at some point we should have a winning record vs them but we don't. I am a believer that you should beat any expansion team you face, but Cowher lost to every expansion team he faced. So he had to split with the expansion Jags who got good quick, and for a few years the Steelers and Jags split every year. The Steelers fell off the cliff first and got swept by the Jags, so Cowher never did have a winning record against them. And we still don't.

I remember going to the Pittsburgh airport on September 8, 2001. This was (just) before 9/11 when you could go to the airport and shop. There I saw Cowher, Mularkey, and a number of players and coaches there to get on a plane to go to Jacksonville to play the Jags the next day. The Steelers got their butts kicked. Then on the 11th, something worse happened.

Be very weary of the Jag they need to get out fast and keep their foot down.

Yes, this scenario will help eliminate their biggest offensive weapon in Robinson from the gameplan.

The next game vs Jax after the Taylor rampage was early the next season at Jax, the 21-3 loss Labriola covers. Taylor carried 24 times for 96 yds. Jags finished season 6 and 10, Steelers 13-3.

My worst Jax memory is from the 07 playoff game at Pittsburgh. The Steelers had dug out of a 28-10 hole to take a 29-28 lead when faced with a 3rd and 6 around midfield?, a little less than 3 min left, they ran Roethlisberger for a yard.

After the punt the Jags had 4th and 2 around midfield and future HOF QB David Garrard busted a 32 yard run to set up the FG that ended the Steelers season.
