Hope it's for the minimum. He didn't impress me last year, and he reminds me of a guy that will be unavailable more than he's available. I guess we'll see.

He kinda owes the team a few snaps. I also hope it is a minimum deal but since it is 2 years I assume there will be some bonus money that they can spread over 2 years if he is cut after 2021.
The standard is the standard...Charles Demarr wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 4:47 pmWormley signing a 2 year deal to stay.
Just told the local media in Toledo.

This certainly helps me feel better about the recent player losses

I opened this thread hoping the two year deal was with someone else. Pretty much says it all.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...
Really didn't focus on his play last year TBH, but PFF had him graded very well and he was always a solid player for the Rats. Gotta have some bodies and I'm sure this is a pretty basic/minimal contract.
Tiny hands, smaller heart.
If it's even approaching the 3 per annum Alualu got, I'm not pleased. What little I remember of his small and not very memorable PT involved him getting moved in the wrong direction. Sutton was a nice retain... this is meh at best.

Worley’s 2020 season...
13 games, one start.
148 defensive snaps
eight tackles
three quarterback hits
1.0 sack
Alualu loss panic signing.
Gawd, I hope they didn’t pay this guy over vet minimum. But 2 year deal suggests that they probably did.

This is why he owes Colbert and Rooney some plays.
We paid wormley 2.13 vs. 2.75 for alualu last year; i would guess we offered Alualu 2.75 again, and it didn’t take. If Wormley was worth paying 2.13 to sit on the bench, i expect he’s worth more than that to be #3 in rotation.
Actually, he can play all three positions across the line...or at least that’s what is being reported.

The signing of Wormley, who can potentially play all three positions along the defensive line, should be welcome news for the black and gold faithful.

I don't recall Wormley ever lining up at NT last year, despite Alualu missing a chunk of time.Jobu wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 7:02 pmActually, he can play all three positions across the line...or at least that’s what is being reported.

If the Steelers plan on giving him any significant snaps (especially at NT) they're screwed.
Wormley was listed as primarily a NT earlier in his career, Alualu has never been listed as a NT.

I agree when Wormley played was not very impressed with his play.
I predicted this signing and thought he would get a modest two year deal.
They liked him when he was coming out of college but he was drafted by the Ravens in the 3rd round. In college it was easy to see why they were interested, he is that classic 3-4 DE, that classic Aaron Smith/Cam Heyward type, 6'5" 300 pounder with long arms, 34 1/8 inch arms, big hands, etc. He was able to play the run well, get pressure against the pass and with those long arms he was able to bat down passes and block field goals.
In the NFL he has, for example, batted down 7 passes with those long arms.
It is very hard to draft a rookie 3-4 DE to play in our defense and expect them to have much of an impact. Even Aaron Smith was a project and it took him time to GROW into the player he would become. Brett Kiesel the same thing, as I remember it those two had to hit the weight room to build up their bodies, gain weight before they were ready to become contributors, starters.
Also, this is not some panic signing because they lost Alualu. They were going to sign Wormley regardless I believe because where was the depth behind the starters of Cam and Tuitt? Davis and Buggs are interior players, they are more DTs than starting DEs. You need length, a certain body type to effectively play DE in our 3-4.
So, I understood the need and also that Wormley being resigned made sense. To me he is the latest example of the Steelers taking a former pedigree player from some other team and turning them into a key cog. Many don't remember Travis Kirschke but he has two Super Bowl rings and was the '3rd DE' that spelled Aaron Smith and Brett Kiesel and also filled in for injury when they were hurt. He started 18 games in his 6 years with the Steelers.
I view Wormley as the next Travis Kirschke. This is a great signing.

I DO remember Travis and very warmly...thanks for the perspective. I'm as guilty as anyone for giving up on a player early in their time in the NFL. WE all want insta results.Scunge wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 11:54 pmI predicted this signing and thought he would get a modest two year deal.

Well hopefully he has a better season maybe I am wrong and he turn into a key Cog
Well that is it exactly, shellwagnerblount, how many of us SteelerFurians thought the original signing of Tyson Alualu was going to amount to much?
Or when we signed Kimo Von Oelhoffen from the Bengals?
Or when Colbert signed Kirschke away from the 49ers? Although to be fair, Kevin knew Travis from their time in Detroit.
Outside of Cam Thomas, that big tub of goo we signed in free agency from the Chargers, Colbert has a pretty good track record of bringing in defensive line help in free agency. Wormley, yes, we traded for him originally but, fingers crossed, hopefully continues that trend.

I really hope he turns out half as good as those names mentioned
I wouldn’t count on it.steelmann58 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 1:26 amI really hope he turns out half as good as those names mentioned

I'm going to be pissed if it was for anything more than minimum, he did almost nothing last year for the Steelers.

2 years, 4.5M total with 1.2M signing bonus. JAG that didn't deserve much, if any, guaranteed money.
Too much, imo. They don't have an extra million of cap space to be throwing around.steelcountry wrote: ↑Fri Mar 19, 2021 1:14 pm2 years, 4.5M total with 1.2M signing bonus. JAG that didn't deserve much, if any, guaranteed money.
