Ben says Heath for Steelers' MVP

Actually votes for him every year.

It’s everything. It’s more than just football. Obviously, he’s the best all-around tight end that has played this game in a long time. That’s taking nothing away from [Jason] Witten or [Antonio] Gates or whoever else has done it. The things we ask him to do in the run game, taking double-teams, pulling, doing things like that, tight ends don’t do that nowadays. Tight ends are mostly either blockers or receivers. He does it all.

“He never complains about a thing. We’re pulling him in his 10th year against Tamba Hali and these other linebackers and [Terrell] Suggs, and you never hear a thing from him … I’ll be like, ‘Heath, were you open on that play?’ He’ll go, ‘Ah, it was close.’ Then, I’ll look at the picture, and there was no one around him. I’ve never seen him put his hand up that he was open or complain about anything. And he’s the first guy to go celebrate with the guy who scores the touchdown. He doesn’t care if he doesn’t catch any balls. If we win, that’s all that Heath Miller cares about. That’s what makes him special.

Been more than a few Heath detractors on this site over the years. I'm wondering what they think about Ben's take.

Good article, but if you ask Ben everyone he's ever played with was a Pro Bowler, if not HOFer

I was thinking last game, it's nice to have the sure handed Heath to haul in passes over the middle of the field. He is looking pretty good in this offense right now. When we have enough speed/quickness at the wr position, it takes away the frustration of not having a basketball TE.

Heath has fantastic hands. Always has.

Heath will be useful for a few more years. He's never been a catch and run guy but he has sure hands and will catch it up the seams or across the middle. Like Ben said, what sets him apart is his blocking.

Ben has always said, Heath was the 2nd best teammate he's ever had after Cotchatron

Everything Ben said about Heath is right on the money, except MVP on a team with Ben, Bell and AB. Heath is an unselfish quiet workhorse. His blocking has improved with age. And he's accomplishing all this after tearing his ACL and MCL.

No, actually he said the two best teammates he ever had were Heath and Cotchatron.

Weird he didn't mention Hines Ward?

Both are/were great players. If I had to pick 1 it would be #86

Ward was a great player. Ben believes Cotch was the better teammate, obviously.

Ben is wrong. He needs to be told that HM needs to be replaced with a faster young tight end. Should be pretty easy. Clock a couple of forwards from Slippery Rock University and bring in the fastest one. Oh we have that young Flowerpot TE guy on the PS. He needs to replace Heath too.

All we need is speed at TE? Hell, we got Archer. Plenty of speed.

Whatever side of the Miller debate one falls, I think we all can agree his days are numbered.

He will be fine for next year but no reason why we shouldn't be looking to add/upgrade there.

I was big on adding a TE early but actually think back-up RB could very well be a bigger need in 2015.

Wish Sunday's game didn't matter so we could sit Bell. Would love to get a good look at what we have in Harris.

Baby smurf isn't a legitimate back-up candidate in my opinion.

Given the huge needs on defense as well as lack of depth on oline, I think i've come full circle in that we could potentially get by another year with the same three TEs we have now and ignore the position all together unless a can't miss dropped in our laps.

Draft one early the following year or sign a FA.

Bell can't be expected to carry the load again next year like he had to this year.

Especially coming off the deep playoff run we bout to be embarking on... ;)

You're saying that Heath is all used up but you want to preserve a commodity that has a short shelf life as in running back? Running backs usually have a 4 or 5 good years and then tail off because their skills just degrade over time. No matter what happens 28 year old Lev Bell will not be today's Lev Bell. He'll be special for 3 or 4 more years. Might as well use him as much as possible. I wouldn't doubt that they take another stab at RB in FA next year and he'll get no more usage than Blount did, if that.

Is this Ben's way of pointing out that Bell shouldn't have been voted team MVP?

Usually when you put two TEs on the field you tip your hand to run. When they go base Heath usually can abuse those run stopping LBs all day in coverage. If they get fancy and put a DB on him, they work the seal and pull the running game. It's so simple we the fans take it for granted.

Miller is the guy who forces a defense to commit to what they are doing before a play. Those guys are rare in the league.

Who said anything bout preserving Bell? I don't think anyone would disagree we absolutely need another back to split carries with Bell.

Or I should say "share" as nobody should be splitting.

We can still "use him up" while being smart. And that means making sure the guy has some gas left come postseason.

If you haven't noticed Bell literally is the only back getting touches.

Don't think anyone can do that over 16 games.

So yeah, we need another back.

With the way they use their TEs we can get by another year should we not land one.

And I'm in the camp of wanting one.

by the writers, not the team. i think tuitt has had a similar impact, just not as noticeable to some.

I agree 86. I think Tuitt is overlooked perhaps even underrated by most folks (especially) outside of Pittsburgh. Not saying Tuitt is the next JJ Watt either but I think Tuitt will forge a decent career and as a process become a household name for Steeler fans. ;)

Not that Ben really cares, but I wholeheartedly agree with his assessment of Heath. A lot of us talk all this bullshit about what it means to represent the Steelers and I can think of nobody more deserving than Heath.
