That's his position, I'm sure the team has theirs, and they'll meet somewhere in the middle. Or trade him to SF for Deebo Samuel, who has apparently gone the infamous social media dark on the Niners.

Less than 2/3 what Adams got; if he will also take less than 2/3 what Adams got in guaranteed money ( maybe $45M guaranteed), that would be a great deal for the steelers.

Judging by the SF draft he is probably a 3-4 round pick.

Except the Steelers wouldn’t be getting 2/3’s of an Adams.

One is a known quantity and the other…is earning a bad on-field reputation.

DJ is, right now, probably our best offensive player.

He gets shoved off his routes
He’s small
Not what you would call an elite pass catcher
Not fast enough to take the top off the defense or consistently draw double teams

Our best offensive player ??? Maybe. Maybe not. Our offense sucks. We don’t have great players on offense

I guess it doesn't hurt to ask...

That said, is this guy gonna be a locker-room cancer when they essentially tell him this is what we are offering. No it's not 90...

I believe they drafted this guy because he closely [term used loosely] resembled AB...

Dude has no where near AB's production at this point in his career...

In fact it looks oftentimes to me like dude gives up on routes and has questionable hands to boot...90?

Not Happening!

the thing that’s ‘known’ is that WR production collapses after age 29.

The last time a WR over 29 had a top 10 season in yards was 2019…Julio Jones, who was 30 even. Raiders are buying Adams’ age 30-34 seasons.

Diontae is looking for Christian Kirk money, and i don’t see how you can say “he’s no christian kirk.” Though may be worth clarifying if the Diontae contract would be 5 years / 90 million including next year or extending after next year. Because if it’s five years i cluding next uear, then it’s really a 4 year extension for $87M, which isn’t good.

I think it comes down to the fact DJ isn’t a guy who suits the Steelers offense.

How many good to better WR prospects come out each year the draft ??

I don’t think you need do it all WRs 6 deep either. A dimensional track speed guy can be a real effective piece if used correctly

I really hope the Steelers double up at either WR or RB in this draft. Lots of talent that could be a lot better than what we have

And for the record I don’t hate DJ. I just think his effective role is very limited in Pittsburgh and that might not be the case elsewhere

That Kirk contract has to be viewed as a bad investment rather than a market setter doesn't it?

But after their first 3 years, DJ DOES have better production than AB did after his first 3 years.

AB had great talent around him and a much younger Ben.

DJ had 254 catches for 2,764 yards and 20 TDs, with 5 100 yard games his first 3 seasons. With an over the hill Ben and rapid turnover everywhere on offense with new OCs, and a revolving door of WR coaches.

Antonio, Mr. Big Chest, had only 151 catches, for 2,062 yards, 7 TDs, with 3 100 yard games in his first 3 seasons.

Remember this 3 year production is what ultimately led the Steelers to give him that 5 year, $42 million contract.

But Brown had 103 less catches than DJ after 3 years, had 13 fewer TD catches than DJ, 2 less 100 yard games, etc. But that was enough to get a $42 million dollar contract at that time.

I think DJ will ultimately sign a deal for 4 years, $65-70 million FROM the Steelers. And that is a fair rate for what he has accomplished and his talent.

If they can get a draft pick or 2 in the 2nd - 4th range, I dump him. He's not special. None of our WRs are. Claypool at least has the physical ability to be something but whether he gets there is doubtful. With the moves they've already made by adding to the oline and letting receivers walk, it really is a miracle Ben was able to put together more than a few wins. It's almost like they gave him a garbage offense to make him want to retire.

My unpopular take is that DJ is just scratching his potential because he was playing in an offense that did not take advantage of him and he had a QB that should have retired two years ago.

With an old Ben our offense was so damn predictable and limiting and it is really, really hard to get an accurate assessment of DJ, of Claypool, of Freiermuth, of Najee Harris. It would not surprise me to see James Washington do really, really well in Dallas and leave some scratching their heads here in Pittsburgh.

DJ has better stats than Brown did in his first three years because he's the ONLY player on our entire offense than can gain proper NFL separation. I really like Pat and Najee but neither are going to give you big windows to throw into. Claypool can body people out (when he stays on his feet) but can't get separation.

DJ is a very good but not great WR....but he's the only asset we have that brings any sort of dynamic element to the offense. So, we will probably end up overpaying to retain his services. Still....hell no to 90M.

WR is the single biggest need on offense by far. Until we prioritize SPEED and SEPARATION on offense, we are going to struggle to put up points.

Upon further review......

Among receivers in 2021, DJ was tied for 5th in total receptions, 9th in yards, and tied for 12th in TDs.

An $18m/year contract would make him the 12th highest paid WR in the league (on an annual basis), tied with the likes of Kenny Golladay and Christian Kirk.

If you don't think he's worth it, that's fine, but how exactly are his demands out of line? Seems like his asking price lines up with the market pretty well.

Unfortunately, he is inconsistent. That "inconsistency" has value, or negative value, to be applied to his possible upcoming contract. His numbers need to be offset with intangibles, or stats that aren't measured. I can't speak for the other guys you mentioned, and whether or not they don't have mental hiccups at the most inopportune times. I still say no to $90 M.

Although it's astounding somebody that is as dumb as a box of rocks can make that kind of money.

Christian Watson anyone. I'd be happy if they took him at 1.20. Size & Speed

That's my point, though - $18m is the going rate for a 2nd tier WR. If you want someone with DJ's numbers plus more consistency/intangibles, you better be prepared to drop $20m+ per year at minimum.

This. The market blew up a little bit for WR this offseason. The going rate is bound to go up. People expected a big cap increase without a commensurate rise in salary at a couple of positions, at least?

the Kirk contract seemed crazy at the time, but i’d much rather have kirk at 18/year than davante or tyreek hill at 30/year. Kirk’s almost certain to be the better player than either by 2024, so they’ll really need to be squeezing a lot of juice out of those two this year. And that’s before the fact they gave up top draft picks for those guys as well.

Fundamentally, Diontae’s improving each year, is at an age where improvement is expected and is entering prime production years. He had a similar stat line to Tyreek Hill last season, despite playing in an offense that gives its receivers less time to get open than any other team in the league. I think he’s worth about $25M/year based on market comparisons, but i wouldn’t want to pay that as i think the goal is to ‘get good deals’, and paying a fair market price doesn’t get you ahead at all. $18M though? No brainer.
