Shocking Performance
Its a strange feeling. All the years with Tomlin I got used to slow starts, poor season openers, unpreparedness, mistakes, slow starts, underachieving, all of it. With our without Ben.
But this season I actually felt like the team was about to turn a corner. I was roped in by KP's end of season performance. I was excited about KP's pre-season performance. I was expecting this team to open it up, throw downfield, put points on the board, play to their potential.
Make no mistake, I think its too early to judge KP, and I am not down on the kid yet. I think he has a lot of potential and today's performance hasnt changed that.
However I am still utterly shocked by the game I watched today. I was expecting a close game, I was expecting a solid performance from Pickett. I was expecting at least one receiver to put up crazy numbers.
Usually after a season opening debacle I have no problem identifying where the blame lies. This time is different. I dont know. I really cant figure out who ultimately shit the bed today.
Maybe thats because almost everyone did?
I am not going to blame today solely on Matt Canada, or Tomlin, or KP. I think everyone deserves some of the blame.
I know pre-season means little when gauging a team, but the product the Steelers put on the field in the pre-season was a far cry from what I witnessed today, and I just cant figure out what the hell went wrong....

It's possible Ben was the difference maker.
He pulled off wins that no one else could over and over.
The two thumb-sucking morons running the O apparently didn't know that, I believe this to be true. They are fucking clueless.
Those two idiots probably thought they were gtg for this game with their "preparation".
Coach Mike admitted as much.
This team is fucked with these idiots running things.
BUT WHERE CAN YOU FIND SOMEONE AS GOOD, they cry.

I agree Tomlin is a dunce. He runs the defense and there were receivers running wide the fuck open all over the field and the effort of the entire defense on McCafferys long run was absolutely fucking pathetic. Preparation and execution were god awful and that is on Tomlin.
When you lose 30-7 and fail in all three phases of the game...actually all four because will someone tell me how you can have used up all three of your timeouts when your offense has only generated -3 net yards?...if you are the head coach, if you are publicly blaming anyone other than yourself, you are clueless.

For those who haven’t pieced it all together yet, Steelers emptied their load in preseason. Canada showed absolutely everything his offense had in meaningless games against backups. The 49ers sat their starters in preseason and game planned for what they saw the Steelers doing and absolutely shut it down.
You guys who pounded your chests over 5 meaningless preseason scores, let me know when the fifth regular season TD gets scored by this offense. Week 4 maybe?

It will be interesting to see what impact the loss of Flores has. The defense was a good bit better than expected last year, even given the payroll.Baltostiller wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:00 pmI agree Tomlin is a dunce. Today was a complete embarrassment. It looked like Watt and 10 guys that should be bagging groceries.

This team ain’t doing a goddamn thing with Tomlin as coach. It doesn’t matter. The standard is the standard and blah blah blah.

Ben covered up so many of this idiots warts over the years. Hopefully the EMR can see how bad this ass clown is but I won’t hold my breath. As Swiss says, his job is as safe as the Pope.

Even if all that were true, the first team looked sharp and in sync. Basing season expectations on pre-season performance is a fools errand, however there are bits you can gauge around players execution, QB & WR timing, route running, etc. There was a consistency and a rhythm to the offense.Steelperch wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:07 pmFor those who haven’t pieced it all together yet, Steelers emptied their load in preseason. Now i wouldnt expect an exact replication of that come regular season, but at the very least it proves we have players on our offense that are capable of performing at a high level.
We seem to have learned nothing from any of that. The last drive of the first half gave a glimpse of what this offense can do, even if it was partially against a prevent D. Yes KP missed DJ on a slant that was shameful, but he made up for it on his TD throw to Muth. That drive showed a bit of what we saw in KP last year and in the pre-season - the moment isnt too big for him. He can elevate his game.

EMR doesn’t have to think Tomlin is bad…he just has to want to make change for change’s sake knowing human nature. What is so hard about that.Baltostiller wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:40 pmBen covered up so many of this idiots warts over the years. I think most of what they ran in preseason was available for KP8 today, it is just that the front pocket wall got moved 2-3 yards closer to Pickett and it wrecked everything…vision, throwing lanes, throwing angles, and I believe he had a poor throwing day to boot.Steelperch wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:07 pmFor those who haven’t pieced it all together yet, Steelers emptied their load in preseason. I am going with the front pocket wall got shifted unbeknownst to most, KP, RBs and the line, back about 2-3 yards. I bet we will see some analysis of preseason games overlayed with this game to show an average shift of the front pocket wall.the-other-burg wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:42 pmEven if all that were true, the first team looked sharp and in sync. Should be able to adjust playbook quickly enough to account for that…too many 3-5 step drops in the playbook when they need more 5-7 step drops with what the o-line was giving up initially? Does Canada even have that?
SF and Pittsburgh have QB’s on rookie deals.
Pittsburgh signs Larry O to a $28MM and goes into the season with him and Cam who could fall off a cliff at any moment.
SF? Sign Javon Hargrave for $84MM and extend Bosa.

I am not sure what is so shocking about anything anymore. It was ONE bad clunker of a game.
SF is a REALLY good team with a top 5 defense that came close to going to SB the last year with their 4th or 5th string QB.
The Steelers will win next week (Cleveland SUCKS!) and I can see them improving each week and beating the Raiders and hapless Texans. That’s 3-1 rolling into the Baltimore game. At worst they are 2-2.
It’s one game. Remain calm. All is well.

His is precisely it, especially the part about the pocket being caved in closer.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:54 pmI think most of what they ran in preseason was available for KP8 today, it is just that the front pocket wall got moved 2-3 yards closer to Pickett and it wrecked everything…vision, throwing lanes, throwing angles, and I believe he had a poor throwing day to boot.Steelperch wrote: ↑Sun Sep 10, 2023 9:07 pmFor those who haven’t pieced it all together yet, Steelers emptied their load in preseason. Kenny had some bad throws which were all on him, and his second half decision-making, especially, was abysmal…but he also had a lot of misses that were caused by the throwing lanes being disrupted. Not everyone can change their arm angle and still complete passes the way Patrick Mahomes can.

Actually, pretty much every NFL QB can and does. Hell, the very, very JAG-ish Baker Mayfield does it regularly. He threw a sidearm TD pass to Mike Evans today. Not everyone can change their arm angle and still complete passes the way Patrick Mahomes can.
NHALS = NFL purgatory

Maker Bayfield won a playoff game in Pittsburgh when Ben threw for over 500 yards and 4TDs and lost.
Until Kenny does anything like that, Kenny can’t sniff Baker’s joggy strap.
We should hope to fucking god Kenny is one day as good as Baker.

This is pretty much exactly what I thought would happen, but you have to understand that I placed very little emphasis on what happened late last season vs beat up teams and I placed ZERO value on preseason, because they had their 1st teams out there playing like the Super Bowl vs 2nd and 3rd string players. What the offense did in the preseason was like 7 on 7 vs air. Real NFL play is not like 7 on 7 on air.

The Steelers have a shot to beat Cleveland next week. That shot is TJ Watt blowing the doors off Dawand Jones for some game changing turnovers. If they lose and go 0-2 at home, put a fork in any shot at a playoff season. It will have to be an ugly low scoring game in order to win.

sorry the team failed to get rid of a terrible OC ( sorry Tomlin refused) Tomlin should be called out for the way this team was dominated.
I know it one gmae but Austin scares me as the Team DC another Tomlin keeping him here. their were some players who failed horrible Chuks robbing the team of 10 Million plus Harvin who again should he a subpar punter. Pickett was terrible today missed all over and looked like a rookie Qb instead of second year guy in the system. The Run Blocking was horrible no holes and the Dl/Ilb let up big runs and the secondary play allowed open WR to roam the green grass.

If o woke up with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn’t be be more shocked by today’s performance
Sure I was shocked by the ass kicking. Really thought this was the game of the day
No I was shocked because of how much I liked the moves made by Weidl and the Khan artist
Today, everything they did all off season was just flushed by Kenny, Canada, Austin, Smiff, and Tomlin.
Art II to his credit retooled the front office
Now, he needs to blow up this coaching staff even after Tomlin yet again prevails with his NHALS horseshit
That front office then has to unfuck many Tomlin decisions
Gotta move on from my guy Najee
Where was Joey Jr today?
Need to act swiftlly to upgrade Pickett
He lost me today
He was BADLY outplayed by Mr Ireelevant who played with something you can’t teach, poise.
Can’t sit passively and wait for his contract to expire like I fear they will if they let Tomlin stick around
College ball is littered with young stud qbs
Don’t miss out because you can’t admit you were wrong
Kenny’s ceiling was that of a solid NFL QB
I hate to take a turn to negative town after I was sooo positive heading into this game but Kenny showed his floor today
Yep
He lost me today and I’m not coming back

Kenny wasn't Khan's pick. I don't think they will hesitate to move on if they feel that's the direction to go (which I hope it's not, especially if we don't pick really high). Tomlin couldn't win with a prime Ben after that great defense aged out. The defense is talented again, one of the highest paid in the league and has two guys that are arguably the best at their position and McCaffrey still ran for over 150. If he doesn't blow up that coaching staff, I fear nothing else is going to matter.Steeldrama wrote: ↑Mon Sep 11, 2023 2:57 amIf o woke up with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn’t be be more shocked by today’s performance

Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

I've always been a "trust but verify" type of guy. We didn't get much verification today..lol. WE got a punch in the gut. And I mean MY gut, not some wonderfully toned gut of a pro. I am still optimistic but a lot of things have to get turned around after today. I mean the offense was terrible but most of us realize Canada and Tomlin are still running things and that it takes time for young draft picks, new players from outside and new coaches to gell together..but that D today made me ill. The run defense in particular.
NO panic yet but what an inauspicious start.
Amen Brother
Mr Jibbs and the Happy Henchmen had me fooled too.
Really hoping Broderick Jones is LT1 come Monday night. The running game can will look different with him IMHO.
Pickens needs 10-12 touches every week.
Darnell Washington is A Man.
Hope is NOT lost yet boys and girls

I’ve lost hope.
If the team doesn’t win another game in the rest of Tomlins tenure I will be ecstatic.
The only way to get rid of the stench is losing badly.
Well, that didn’t work for the Lions.

This game was lost when no changes were made in the offseason from a coaching perspective. This staff has won nothing but participation trophies (aka non-losing seasons).Usually after a season opening debacle I have no problem identifying where the blame lies. This time is different. I dont know. I really cant figure out who ultimately shit the bed today.
I was extremely disappointed in Pickett who showed no accuracy in his throws with the Muth TD as an exception. Also, hugely disappointed in the ILB play…sucked into the line and couldn’t shed blocks all game.
Not shocked here at all. I was cautiously optimistic coming in but that was gone after each team had their first possession.
SF cut through our D easily. Like a cat toying with a dying mouse.
Hey, didn’t Peterson say SF’s offense was full of “tells”??
Guess they changed them.
I knew we would not be able to run the hall. Also not shocked when we were going out there trying to still run the ball on first and 2nd down while down 20 points.
Our offense is so stale and pathetic.
Now we will win some games. Will certainly do enough to cement another NHALS and the talking heads (and a few idiots here) will continue to blow Jibbs like he’s some great coach.
But what we saw today, is what we will see again IF this team manages to face a top tier team in the playoffs.
And these shitheads had two weeks and that’s the best they could come up with.
At least you guys didn’t have to suffer through that freshman level performance with a bunch of screaming 49er fans like I did.

Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 88 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.
Pickett had a bad game but we should conclude that one game makes him a scrub.
Patrick P lost footing on one of the TDs he gave up. He had perfect coverage on the TD in early 2nd quarter. It was a per pass that threaded an impossibly small needle.
