Bottoming out
I highly doubt this is in play this year but perhaps next year ?? What would it potentially mean ??
Some thoughts
- A completely new coaching staff. New ideas perhaps but not guaranteed particularly since both of the Steelers HOF QBs in the last 50 years were coached to play conservatively and feed the run game and help the defense for large portions of their careers.
- Highly unlikely KP would be any decent incoming HCs first choice at QB and in fact it would be pretty likely that the new HC would want to draft a QB that he wanted
- Would the Steelers and the new HC get the right QB on their first attempt ?? Given their history with all 3 HCs over the last 50 years I think we can say that’s pretty unlikely. So let’s consider a timeline
Total coaching staff change January 2025
They draft a QB flop but take 3 years to move on
It’s January 2028 they are planning a draft who’s left from this team as we know it ??
I think the Steelers history means all of the current WRs are gone as well as all of the current RBs
All of the LBs are gone except Highsmith and Herbig
All-Pro Darnell Washington is still around at TE
So is JPJ along with Boz and Harvin and All Pro LT Broderick Jones
So that’s what ? 5 starters left
Let’s pretend from 2024 draft through 2027 (4 drafts) they’ve averaged a pretty good 3 solid starters and 2 backups per draft. That would mean they have 17 starters of the 24 needed to cover both sides starters and 3rd down at a minimum…. as well as 8 backups drafted ….and like another 8 udfa/fa backups and 2 fa starters
So they have 19 starters of 24 and 16 backups of 26
That leaves 15 spots to fill with 1 being a franchise QB and 4 other lesser starters at 2028 draft and off-season
Let’s be hopeful and pretend they don’t have to give up a lot to draft a great QB in a Roethlisberger type draft
In that Roethlisberger type timeline where we draft one of the very best to ever play as the 3rd QB off the board we win a Lombardi in what February 2030 ???
This ^^^^^ is why all this bullshit about never wanting to bottom out is so frustrating
No one can predict the future but given the extreme good fortune needed for this hypothetical
Some of us will be dead before the Steelers will be competitive for a championship again……and it very well could be much longer
We all deserve better than a slow death achingly orchestrated by a Steelers organization that refuses to attempt even just some bold moves

Your assumptions forget one thing. When a new head coach comes in, all the talent evaluations change, and they are able to get more out of less including players and coaches.
Cowher came in and it was an immediate change and new energy. Cowher started in 92 and it was a Super Bowl in 3 seasons. .
Tomlin dtarted 2007 and it was an immediate change and Super Bowl victory in 2 seasons.

Don't forget in your time-line the Steelers do not have a franchise qb with alot of salary cap space. I could see, hopefully, a loaded team like the 9ers only needing a franchise qb.

I think it would take a complete meltdown for any chance of Tomlin getting fired. Five straight losing seasons with no relief in sight might do it.
A more realistic scenario would be one of the talking pre-game heads retiring, and the network deciding to throw a ton of money at Tomlin. Tomlin would be perfect for that role. Maybe he'd be persuaded to make the leap if offered a big enough sack of cash.

I get what you are saying and it is true if you believe the organization has truly been run into the ground, and nothing is salvageable.
I don’t subscribe to that. At times it feels that way yes, but a new skipper worth his salt could turn things around rather quickly.
But I do acknowledge you could be correct and I will never see another ring in my lifetime.

I think you are kidding yourself that the Steelers will turn things around quickly
In the last 50 years it hasn’t happened
Why would it happen now ??

It could work this way…but it doesn’t always work this way.LakecrestSteeler wrote: ↑Mon Oct 30, 2023 9:14 amYour assumptions forget one thing. When a new head coach comes in, all the talent evaluations change, and they are able to get more out of less including players and coaches.

The talent base has to be there.
Noll drafted a lot of the cornerstone players for Cowher’s first teams.
Cowher handed Tomlin a Super Bowl caliber team that was coming off a hangover of a year where the QB face planted into a car windshield and the head coach didn’t know what to do with himself after finally having won the Lombardi.
That will not necessarily be the case with this team once a new coach finally takes over.
This team is not as talented as we think it is.
