Steelers needing help...history and analysis
The Pittsburgh Steelers have a loooong history of needing help to qualify for the playoffs. Following will be an account of that history, followed by an analysis of Steelers' chances to qualify for the NFL post-season tournament this coming weekend:
*1976...really looked as though Steelers would be on outside looking in, despite being in the midst of a 9-game winning streak to close the season at 10-4. Needed Raiders, already having clinched home field throughout the playoffs, to beat the Bengals in Oakland on a Monday night, in season's next to last game. Further, NOBODY, given the animosity between Steelers and Oakland, and the Fat Fuck John Madden, to have the Raiders help the Steelers. But they did, vanquishing the Steelers easily. We all know what followed, Steelers, minus both Franco and Rocky, lose at Oakland in AFCCG. The AFCCG should have been at TRS versus the New England Patriot, but the official Ben Fuckin' Dreith, interceded on the Raiders behalf with bullshit personal foul on New England late in that game. Love hearing Phil Villipiano comment on that season though, and how on Raiders SB rings, they had inscribed the score of the AFCCG. "That," said Villipiano, "was how much we hated the Pittsburgh Steelers."
*1977...Steelers, having lost to the Bengals in Cinci the previous weekend, needed shitty Oilers to beat Bengals in the season finale. They did so, and Lynn Swann, sent enitre Oilers roster briefcases. Steelers lost in first round of playoffs in Denver on Christmas Even, making it a shitty fuckin' Christmas for Steeler fans.
*1989....Steelers needed a ton of shit to happen, needed a shitload of help over the season's final two weeks, to qualify. Final weekend, needed Colts to lost to Saints, which happened, needed Raiders to lose for the second time in two weeks, which happened, and finally, needed Vikes to beat Bengals in Minnesota, on Christmas night. Vikes needed win to make the playoffs. Vikings won, Steelers qualified, THEN upset Oilers in Houston in WC round on Gary Anderson's 50 yarder in OT. Damn near won Div playoff in Denver were in not for Mark Fuckin' Stock dropping a perfect pass from Bubby Brister that would have put the Steelers near midfield late needing only a FG to win, which would have put the Steelers in Cleveland for the AFCCG. Can you imagine?
*1993...Steelers needed Patriot to beat Dolphins in Foxboro, then Oilers to beat Jetsin Houston in the Sunday nighter on final weekend. Both happened, Buddy Ryan punched out Kevin Gilbride on Oilers sideline. Steelers lost WC game in KC, a fuckin' heartbreaker, with Jeff whathisname dropping an o"donnell pass, followed by a Mark Royal blocked punt....ugh
*2000....Needed Vikes to beat Colts in finale....didn't happen....ugh
*2005....Steelers needed to win out in final four games, and have BOTH Chiefs and Chargers lose twice....which would require some upsets. Chiefs lost in Meadowlands to shitty Giants, then lost at Dallas the following week, Chargers lost in San Diego to Dolphins, then lost to Chiefs.....Steelers qualified....rest is history.
*One other season....either '06 or '09, Steelers needed some help on final Saturday....didn't get it....missed playoffs...My memory....ugh
*2013....this one SUCKED. I was in my Prince Edward Island wonderland, and hooked shit up so I could watch 3 games at once. Steelers needed on the final Sunday to win while having Jets lose to Dolphins in Miami, which they did, Ravens lose in Cinci, which they did, and at 4pm, have Chiefs, locked into their playoff position, lose to Chargers in San Diego. The Fat Fuck Andy Reid had already stated that he didn't give a fuck about some other team's playoff chances, he was resting guys and starting Chase Daniel at QB. Well, game comes to Ryan Fuckin' Succop, needing to make a 42 yarder to win the game for the Chiefs at the final gun and put the Steelers in the playoffs. The fucker missed it, and then the zebras screwed over the Steelers in the OT, basically handing the game to the Chargers. And that fuckin' Ryan Succop blew out his knee first round of playoffs....served that fucker right.
*2018...Steelers, after a late season collapse, needed Browns to beat Ravens in Cleveland, which was very unlikely.....but....Browns, needing a FG to win late, were driving, Baker Mayfield had a receiver wide the fuck open on the sideline to put the Browns in Fg range, but threw a shitty fuckin' pass behind him. Browns close, Steelers home for playoffs.
*2021....Steelers needed to win in Baltimore on final weekened, sound familiar, which they did in OT, then needed Jags to beat Colts on final weekend. NOBODY expected it to happen, but it did. Then, needed Raiders and Chargers to NOT tie, which damn near almost happened. Raiders made like a 50 yard FG as OT expired when it looked like they were playing for the tie.....Steelers go to KC, take early 7-0 lead on TJ Watt fumble return, then get blown the fuck out.
*2022....Steelers need Patriots to lose to Bills on final Sunday, and need Jets, with Joe Fucco at QB, to in in Miami. Fucco sucks, Jets score 6 fuckin' points, victimized by horse collar tackle late, Dolphin kick 50 yarder at the end to go to the tournament, Steelers stay the fuck home despite having won 7 of final 9 games, two of those wins requiring late 4Q magic, including a win IN Baltimore on a Sunday night.
2023 analysis:
*Dolpins over Bills??? Yes, Miami has injuries, including to their leading pass rusher, a Pro Bowl linebacker, and Bills are supposedly hot. But let's look at this.
First, Bills....Bills damn near lost to shitty fuckin' Chargers last week. Then yesterday, benfitted from FIVE Patriots turnovers to win a one-score game in Buffalo.
Dolphins, meanwhile, are 7-1 at home....AND....need this fuckin' game to have realistic SB hopes. They win, and they're #2 seed, which means they're at home for the playoffs at least until AFCCG...in Baltimore...LOL. They lose, and they're on the road next week, possibly in Buffalo
*Titans over Jags....??
Jags....had lost four in a row until yesterday. Will Trevor Lawrence be back?
Titans...yes, they're 5-11, and sucked ass yesterday in Houston. But...they're 4-4 at home, and last three losses at home involved two OT losses, one in which Colts blocked two punts, and last minute loss to Seahawks. theyre 3.5 point underdogs. Could happen
Finally, IF Steelers lose and IF Jags lose to Titans....
*Broncos over Raiders in Las Vegas
Fuck....REALLY thought Raiders would win in Indy yeserday and give the Steelers another way in with Indy win at home over Texans next week. But, Raiders offense fuckin' sucks. I watched most of this game yesterday. Of Raiders 9 offensive possesions, they punted on 4th & short IN Indy territory FOUR times. I didn't blame Antonio Pierce for doing so, as there was little confidence that his team would gain the necessary 1-3 yards on 4th down. Killer was before half, with Raiders down only 7-3, then Indy drives for a TD (sound familiar) and 14-3 halftime lead. Then...fuckin' offside on Raiders on FG attempt late which hit the upright and would have kept it a one-score game.
Being honest, I think Raiders beat Doncos at home on Sunday.
Haven't checked the latest percentages on Steelers chances IF they win on Sunday. Latest I saw gives Steelers 25% chance of making playoffs, but the one, I don't believe, separated out, dif if t Steelers win Saturday vs. if they lose.
THE END...took me forever to write this shit.

Already wrote this elsewhere.
As improbable as we thought the events getting is into the 2005 playoffs were, in the end they weren’t that improbable in all likelihood.
Chiefs finished 10-6, Chargers 9-7, the Dolphins 9-7, the Giants 11-5 (that is NOT shitty) and the Cowboys 9-7.
Chiefs lost to the Cowboys and Giants…none of those would be major upsets.
Chargers lost to the Dolphins and Chiefs…again, not huge upsets.
So the most “improbable” aspect of the whole year was probably Pittsburgh winning eight straight (the last four plus the four postseason games).
And beating a Chicago team that had the number one defense to start the whole streak…at a time the Steelers’ confidence was somewhat low, regardless of Cowher’s “wipe the board clean, everybody grade themselves, and think of Christopher Columbus” speech.

Swiss you meant Steelers needed Chiefs to WIN in 2013 as final game in trifecta to make playoffs.
That was yet another year where Steelers shit their own bed by starting 0-4, including bad loss in London to Vikes (also 0-3 going into that game, 5-10-1 on year), Raiders (4-12, game started with Tyrelle Pryor 93-yard TD run against clueless D), and late season home loss to Dolphins.
That's the game in the snow where AB appeared to have a miracle TD on last play of game, a crazy 5 or 6 player lateral for about 80 yards where he had a clear lane to the end zone but stepped out of bounds around the 15. Early dementia??

I got a bad feeling it's not gonna happen.
We are going to be 10-7 and 5-1 in the division and not make it. SMH.
Got a feeling Jags and Bills win.
Gonna suck. Mason with the offense rolling. Getting TWO safeties back for the playoffs. Man I think they can do something if they get in.
Hate we are in this position again

I think Mike Vrabel's going to come through for us....even if he needs to personally kick Doug Pederson's ass.
no waddle for miami against bills too. Can't see them winning. I think titans could win. Jags are getting back kirk and lawrence though.
Also swiss it was 2009 steelers needed help but did not get it. They did need like 4 games to go their way and I think three did.
Last year that was a legit horse collar. It was correct call. It did put miami in range to make fg with their third string qb against Flacco. But it was correct call.
I don't blame any reid for not caring about other results. Tomlin has done the same thing. He sent his Jv squad as he called it to Cleveland and handed the browns the playoffs that year. Came back to bite him because browns beat steelers next week.
otherwise good stuff.

It’s pretty simple, this team needs help because this team (especially under Jibbs) routinely fails to handle their own business.
When multiple players come out and say how they took a 2 win team lightly and how practice was lackadaisical that week that puts the spotlight on Tomlin.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.
Interesting thing about Joe Flacco..
I just knew the Jets had no chance against Miami in that game. To see him do this 180 is interesting. Maybe it's because he has something to play for with a team in the thick if it, because in that Jets- Dolphins game he played like he wanted no parts.

The NFL needs to come up with a system so that if you win enough games earlier in the season, you don’t have to depend on other teams to do your dirty work for you in the last couple of weeks.955876 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 5:46 pmAnd you accuse me of having long post.THE END...took me forever to write this shit.

I know hiw the Steelers can do it, hire a competent coach that doesn't lose to 2-10 teams in back to back weeks.Jobu wrote: ↑Thu Jan 04, 2024 11:39 amThe NFL needs to come up with a system so that if you win enough games earlier in the season, you don’t have to depend on other teams to do your dirty work for you in the last couple of weeks.955876 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 5:46 pmAnd you accuse me of having long post.THE END...took me forever to write this shit.

This could have been one of the most memorable plays in Steelers history, but AB fucked it up. What has always killed me is he stepped out of bounds on his own. He wasn’t pushed out. He just had a typical AB brain fart and didn’t pay attention to the sideline. He had plenty of room.
Mike Tomlin and NHALS - The embodiment of the soft bigotry of lowered expectations.
