Will the Steelers make another move ?

Post by steelmann58 » Tue Jul 09, 2024 12:07 am

They have FA money there are some still quality players out there especially in the secondary and maybe a 4th olb. I still think they will make some move towards to end of camp.

It is my opinion that at this point, they are going to wait to see what they already have.

IF during camp the situation at WR or CB, or any other position for that matter, looks problematic, then maybe we'll see another addition.

I think the team is unwilling to give up significant draft capital to bring anyone on. I say this, because they know they have a lot of holes to fill in the next couple drafts. DL, RB, CB, and most likely QB.

Have we passed that Veteran cut date / pre- roster bonus date.........?
That may have some interesting vets released

Yes, that's why Chuks, Cole, and Peterson were all released.

Teams begin reporting to training camp next week, so we're probably not going to see any big moves until the cutdown date approaches in late August.

A Joe Haden like signing would sure hit the spot

Brandon Boykin?

I think the team is waiting for the receiver situation to shake out as that will be a big chunk of cap space.

We will see more moves before the season starts. Still to early to see if they will be big moves or small ones.

To solve our current CB & WR dilemma, I suggest Michael Pettaway Tomlin put on his old-school, Big Boy pants and start a fan frenzy with some Jackson mania by recreating the Jackson 5! To start things off, he should go on a bender by chuggin' a bottle of Tito, which should help change his rather Jermaine tune of telling ex-players that he Never Can Say Goodbye!

At CB, it's as simple as ABC...1-2-3! He should tell the likes of Patrick Peterson, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Steven Nelson that A Change Is Gonna Come and I (Don't) Want You Back. And then maybe, just maybe, he should show them that we've got us a Brand New Thing by signing the likes of Adoree' Jackson, J (Jackie).C. Jackson, and Kareem Jackson!

Continuing the bender, he should top off downing another 5th by signing WR (and big DAWG), Kearis Jackson -- after he gets cut by the Titans! Add in previously signed I'll Be There CB, Donte Jackson, and I say to you, Mr. Tomlin, Enjoy Yourself like a Dancing Machine, you've got your 2024 Jackson 5!

Could these moves cement his Destiny of a Marlon/Godfather-esque legacy in the Steeltown Records books? Maybe. :P

I will say, the italic words are the only change in font (style) that show up for me, at least. Those particular words where done on purpose as to follow Drama's usual Draft Forum Thread proses. All of the italicized words are in some way related to the Jackson 5 -- the obvious (I thought) theme of the post.

They will undoubtedly make at least one trade before the season, and possibly some more moves in FA.

2023: two trades in August (Dotson, Green)
2022: two trades in August (Malik Reed, Jesse Davis)
2021: one trade in August (Joe Schobert)
2020: no August trade, but made an in-season trade for Avery Williamson
2019: one August trade, two September trades (including Minkah)
2018: one August trade (Switzer)
2017: one August trade, two September trades
2016: one early September trade (Justin Gilbert)
2015: two August trades, one early September trade
2014: no trades!

Seems very, very, very likely we'll make at least one more, maybe more.

my prediction? Dan Moore gets dealt if Dylan Cook shows he belongs

Was about to say the same thing. This list has me hoping there is no trade. Dan Moore getting shipped out means we've committed to Fautanu and Jones at the OT spots, which would be a positive sign for the future.

Other than the Minkah trade the Steelers didn't give up anything to acquire those guys.

You're not going to get a game-changer for a conditional 6th or a swap of 7th rounders.

I think it's just a matter of time.

Aiyuk is supposedly saying he wants to go to Pittsburgh.

The other teams that seem to want him are much worse than the Steelers.

Washington, New England are the others mentioned.

I have a feeling they send Aiyuk to the Steelers within the next week.

His demand being public doesn't change jack shit IMO.
Don't conflate what the Steelers do with other teams' approach.
Lots of guys request trades during the offseason. To be fair, most of them are granted, but not all and I think Aiyuk falls into this category. I mean Higgins in Cincy requested one too and he's still around. Believe Hutchinson did as well.

Not my words, but perfectly stated:
The 49ers didn't trade Samuel when he requested one in a more or less identical position. Barring the sort of all time sulk that should make teams reconsider whether they actually want Aiyuk, I don't see why they'd handle it differently.

The 49ers had to have thought through all the scenarios when they decided not to trade Aiyuk at the draft, right? Including the real possibility they couldn't get a contract done until a long way through the summer, if then?

If they decided that was the better course then, why change their minds? A trade request had to be one of the scenarios they brought up and decided they could live with.

They're in a championship window. There's no deal they can strike that'll make them stronger this season. They'll still have control over Aiyuk next season through the franchise tag.

The only real reason I see for them to change their mind is Aiyuk getting stupidly unhappy, or a stupidly big trade offer. And a trade request isn't the former.

We'll see. The Niners cannot pay everybody. When players request trades, 99% of the time those requests are granted.

Yep, Samuels wanted a trade and the Niners kept him. That's because they weren't paying anybody big at the WR position and they felt like they could work something out with Deebo that would be satisfactory to both parties.

They cannot pay both Deebo and Aiyuk, not the mention Kittle, McCaffrey and soon, Purdy.

Aiyuk is gone. They WILL trade him (avatar bet?) and now it's just a matter of where. Aiyuk has been much, much more public than Deebo was. Samuel was pissed but Aiyuk is livid....and he KNOWS the 49ers can't keep him.

With the Steelers glaring need at WR and with the 49ers spending 2 picks on that position (including a first rounder) the Niners are just trying to get the best compensation package they can for Aiyuk at this point.

Agree with KC. Aiyuk holds some cards here and with drafting Peresall and re-signing Juann Jennings they don’t “need” Aiyuk as they did last time they went through this with Deebo. Plus they are a year closer to having to pay some large contracts.

Look, I don’t know how much this makes sense but honestly, who cares? Go get him and make this shit interesting once more. It’s not like Tomlin and the Steelers have a 3-5 year plan for this current team. Maybe at offensive line they do, and a few pieces on defense, but beyond that, who knows? Go get Aiyuk and sign him to a big deal. We are paying a once superstar only 1.7M to play QB. If there is a time to do some weird roster shit, its RIGHT NOW.

KC- I'm not as confident in this bet as I am about our Mitch Trubisky one, so I need to pass

Do I want the Steelers to trade for him? Conditionally, yes.

I just feel the 49ers are asking for too much and I believe Khan and Co won't get bent over, otherwise this trade would've been a done deal.

Maybe once camp opens and the Niners actually see what their draft picks can do. If they perform, perhaps they loosen up their demands. But if they don't can you imagine a scenario where they trade a MAJOR contributor when they are in their SB window? I don't. I mean if you assume the Niners don't pick up anyone else and they ship him out, they're in a similar predicament the Steelers are in: just 1 true WR and the rest are a bunch of mystery boxes behind Samuel.

Yes, the Niners are very much going to be in cap hell soon, but I think it's SB or bust for them the next couple years.

If I'm the Niners, I'm keeping him. Sell him on winning the ring, then try and tag/sign and trade next season, or if you win it all, let him walk. I'd trade a first rounder for a potential Lombardi, and man, I love draft picks. I don't think any NFL executive worth his paycheck wouldn't do the same.

Ice, I would be right next to you, following your lead on trying to convince him to play ball.

Niners best hope for value is that he plays for them this season and is motivated. It is not even close, imo. The trade market for a disgruntled player who is expecting a huge contract goes down every day he is still on the team from my perspective.

Furthermore, what assurance does his new team have that he’s not a product of the system which made Mr. Irrelevant into an MVP candidate?

He’s not ever caught more than 80 balls, only has one season above 1300 yds and is coming up on a rich contract. I like the player quite a bit and would want him on the Steelers, but would not want to go higher than a 3rd at this point. A conditional 3rd maybe being more ideal; could become a 2nd if he accumulated enough counting stats, or a 5th in the event of limited participation.

Usually I would say just wait until free agency to sign someone, don't pay top dollar and give up a pick, but Aiyuk appeals as a bit of an ideal Pittsburgh player fit.

I'd also very much like to see what Pickens does as WR1 this year. The Artie-fense everywhere else he's been has featured a great WR1 and not much else at the position. If there's a chance we've got that in house already, why piss off a moody Pickens by bringing in Aiyuk and blow draft capital and big money (which could just be used on Pickens, the homegrown product, eventually) on what, in our current offense, could be a redundant player, even if he's a very good redundant player.

Aiyuk has more value in SF than he would in Pittsburgh, for now. If Pickens turns out not to be the guy, go get an Aiyuk in the offseason.

Or am I confusing him with the other ILB that went to the Raiders?

Old, trusted vet for special teams/bottom of the roster duty. I'd really prefer if these positions could be manned by young, hungry, up and coming players, but we do what we do.
