It won’t be long–likely after another first-round playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens–until the Pittsburgh Steelers will be faced with a pivotal moment heading into the 2025 offseason, with a strong case to overhaul their coaching staff.
Here are five coaches the Steelers need to pink slip as soon as possible:
1
OL coach Pat Meyer
Pat Meyer’s work with the offensive line has also been subpar, with protection issues persisting despite roster investments.
2
OC Arthur Smith
run run pass

You get the picture. Arthur Smith is Matt Canada and every other offensive coordinator since Todd Haley. Third time is not the charm. It’s beyond time for the Steelers to bring in someone who is competent at creative, unpredictable game plans that throw off defenses and doesn’t kowtow to Mike Tomlin. Smith’s predictable play-calling has stifled creativity and underutilized key talent, contributing to stagnant performances.
3
DC Teryl Austin
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin has struggled to field a consistent, disciplined defense, often faltering in crucial moments. The Steelers boast the highest-paid defense in the league, oozing with roster talent, yet consistently get out-schemed and out-played by good teams and good coaches. Austin preaches a bend, don’t break mentality, and practices rush 4 with soft zone and no blitzes. As a result, the defense gets picked apart by quarterbacks who can get the ball out fast to reliable receivers.
4
QB coach Mike Sullivan
Mike Sullivan wasn’t given much to work with in his first two seasons as quarterbacks coach. But when handed veteran Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson, he failed again. Sullivan has been unable to elevate the performance of the team’s quarterbacks, contributing to inconsistency at the most critical position.
5
WR coach Zach Azzanni
What can be said about the state of the Steelers’ wide receivers room that hasn’t already been said? It’s got to be impossible to coach a corp of receivers that includes a star who only cares about one person: Himself. But great coaches work through it and manage their players to put their best on the field each week. Zach Azzanni isn’t it.
6
HC Mike Tomlin
This isn’t happening, but one can dream, can’t she? The common denominator of Pittsburgh’s last nine seasons of one-and-done in the postseason after collapsing during the regular season is Mike Tomlin. Steelers Nation (and the press) are sick and tired of Tomlin’s meaningless word salad and recycles phrases as he attempts to explain away why they’re so bad. Year after year after year.
In the last 13 seasons, the Steelers are 3-8 in the playoffs under Tomlin. His team has suffered five straight postseason losses (most in the first round) and has seven seasons without a conference championship appearance.
Tomlin has resisted addressing systemic issues and adapting to modern NFL demands. You can change the quarterback, you can change the offensive line, you can change assistant coaches. But until Tomlin is gone, none of that will matter.

Unfortunately Deuce never fires any assistant with years remaining on their contract, so wishful thinking....I still think best case is they trade Tomlin, but this is also very very unlikely....Its crazy that the Pats can jettison Belichek but the Deuce won't get rid of Tomlin...BTW Jarod Mayo just got the axe as well, one and done, looks like Vrable will be swooped off the market fairly quickly with his New England roots.

The grammar and capitalization errors are pretty consistent with the freeware version of chatgpt, and believe me, I'd know. Kinda sad she's too cheap to spring for the pay version, which doesn't make those errors and is a lot more coherent overall. If I was passing it off as my own "journalism," I'd feel like it was a pretty necessary monthly expense. Just cancel Disney and Hulu if it's too much money, for Chrissakes.

Not gonna say that's a bad list or that I disagree. However, many missed points.
#1 on the list should be the TE coach. Unless someone on here can name ONE TE this dude coached up. Or had a TE whose career ascended or at least flatlined. Dude regressed ever player hes been in a meeting room with.
Somewhere close to the top of the list, should be the secondary coach. See #1 as to reasons why. Name a DB or safety hes coached up?

In fact I suspect he copy and pasted click bait and had zero clue it’s AI

There is an old saying that when you are debating which QB to start, then you don't have any QB.
I think if you are debating firing five coaches, then it is obvious the HC must go.

Arthur Smith, please leave
make it a complete package, Tomlin, Smith and the Lack of D coordinator, clipboard holderNFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Jets requested an interview with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith for their head coaching vacancy.
It didn’t take long for Smith to repair his image after a disappointing first stint in Atlanta. Smith, who interviewed with the Jets twice before landing his head coaching role with the Falcons in 2021, worked wonders with the quarterback duo of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields during his first season in Pittsburgh and had the Steelers off to a 4-2 start in Fields’ six starts of the season. Smith’s ability to make the most out of two castoffs was bound to draw the interest of a handful of teams this offseason. While things look impressive on the surface, we can’t overlook the fact that his offense still ranked 26th in overall success rate (40.7 percent) and 20th in EPA per play. The spreadsheet nerds would likely advise against the hiring of Smith, but there’s no denying the league views him in a favorable light. He’s a near lock to draw more interview requests.

One can only hope.
As I said elsewhere, the Steelers don't fire coaches.
