Colbert and Tomlin torpedoing the future to save their jobs

Post by The Riddle of Steel » Wed Sep 25, 2019 2:44 pm

Wow, is it ever so clear what is going on here with the insane amount of trade activity this season? Tomlin and Colbert are getting so desperate to "preserve the streak" that they are willing to torpedo this team's future to struggle to a .500 record. How many draft picks do we have left in the 2020 draft now? 4? 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th?

Either way we are screwed -- we are in the FIGHT OF OUR LIVES to finish 8-8 with no playoffs and keep Tomlin and/or Colbert for another few years with no 1st round pick or we BREAK THE STREAK, Tomlin is fired and a new staff comes in with a roster in shambles and no 1st round pick.

Nick Vannett, ugh.

We already have our top draft picks from the 2020 draft.

Ben comes back and plays 5 more years with a bionic arm.

Vannett for Dobbs was what this essentially was.

What's wrong with Samuels? I keep wondering why Jaylen Samuels isn't ever given any reps? He has shown the propensity to play well. Even performing "Slash Plays" when called upon. Is there something there we know nothing about? Samuels could very well be placed in the TE spot. He has experience in every skill position on offense going back to college. Why is Fichtner/Tomlin holding him out? Especially when Conner seems to have ball security issues. McDonald isn't IR'd so that says he will return sooner than later. Grimble is barely JAG and is now permanently out for the season. I don't understand why Samuels isn't even a consideration for at least pinch/relief at either RB or TE positions. Perplexing.

There is nothing wrong with him. Quite the opposite, in fact. The issue is our coaches are goddamn morons.

They're hung up on the idea that Conner is the starter and the starter should play all the time. They had "great plans" for incorporating Samuels as a change of pace, but they never got around to it because they couldn't convert 3rd downs and get into the second or third set of downs where they had a package for him. Apparently. As if you couldn't insert him after you've failed to do anything for a quarter and a half.

The Steelers run first and second down plays with the intent of getting to manageable third downs. Winning teams run first and second down plays with the intent of converting first downs...or better.

Yep.

Our idea of a successful first and second down is a 1 yard Conner run followed by a 0 yard pass to Switzer. 3rd and 9 --- we've got them exactly where we want them!

Its amazing how much an inferior strategy can be masked when you have Ben slinging to AB.
