Tomlin Tuesday Presser

Post by Steelperch » Tue Oct 13, 2015 2:12 pm

It's Tuesday. Live at noon:

Watch Live: http://www.steelers.com
Listen Live: http://player.radio.com/listen/station/93-7-the-fan

Chargers game
Gritty performance
Have to win more 3rd downs near midfield, need to possess it more.
Heyward and Tuitt pushed the pocket and drew holding calls. Significant plays.

Cardinals Game
very balanced on offense, pass and run
Fitzgerald is a generational guy
Secondary does a great job of getting the ball
Playing with the lead and attacking on defense

Injuries
Will Allen - getting MRI on ankle
Ventrone - hamstring, getting evaluated
Ben - no updates
Shazier - expect to be back
Cortez Allen - working his way back
Martavis Bryant - will activate him by 4pm today. Assume he's healthy?

Questions
On 18 second run off, Who is responsible for the clock?- Tomlin, nobody we assume it's handled properly. Won't chase ghosts moving forward.
Bell was getting the ball on final play not matter what.
Crowd was unique but like the road crowd in Atlanta and Washington in recent years.

At least we know Ben's son want him to play tackle football at the house.......:)

Can't wait til he gets back in a week or 2, or 3

Straight forward running is good, lateral movement still not good enough......Will test it more in practice tomorrow. And that's the Ben health report

Proposed (but probably unasked) question:

"Mike, how do you, and absolutely no one on the sideline completely miss the fact that 18 seconds ran off the clock? Given that you did, would you finally admit that you are "clock challenged"????"?

"Cortez is working his way back"

something tells me this will be the quote on Tez status for awhile.

Reporter: Coach, how bad must Landry Jones be if you would rather play a QB that doesn't know the offense and doesn't give you the option of throwing down field?

Tomlin: Well with Landry Jones, above the neck he's still below the line. Next Question

Then why is he on the roster?

This was a fake question, right?

SIGH.

You automatically assume every press-conference Tomlinism means "I don't care and I'll never change."

Maybe "not chasing ghosts" means "it didn't matter and I'm done talking about it."

No- I automatically assume that when Tomlin says no one is responsible for the clock, he's telling the truth.

And that he has no one responsible for monitoring the clock is stupid and another one of those details that he as a head coach should have covered.

Problems with the clock in the NFL aren't new- they happen all the time. Why would you "just assume it's handled correctly"?

And Pierogi- I don't assume Tomlin doesn't care and will never change merely because of what he says.

I assume he doesn't care and will never change because he doesn't seem to care and never changes.

Maybe, the "next man up" can man the clock management...

He's also not allowed to say anything about officiating or anything that puts the NFL in a bad light-- the league is adamant about that right now.

Who's asking him to say anything bad about the NFL?

I'm asking him to have a damn guy to watch the clock in late game situations- it's kind of an important detail!

I think they probably do have someone watching out for that kind of thing-- some somebody who looks at the challenge replay.

Tomlin stated very succinctly that during the change of possession from kick off to offense isn't usually one of those times you would think the clock would have issue.

Can Archer operate a stop watch? Because if so we may have finally found a way he can contribute.

Not Tomlin, anyway....there seems to be a lot of things Tomlin doesn't usually think about.

They released a statement-- the responsibility of the clock operator and the side judge

I noticed something in the Ravens game. When the Steelers stopped them on downs right before the two minute warning. The ball came out and Harrison ran with it but the refs blew the play dead. In the process the clock ticked below two minutes. Harbaugh was talking to the ref right away to put the clock back over two minutes. Maybe the refs would have caught it anyways but as a head coach, you have to pay attention to the clock. If the clock stays under two minutes, the Ravens lose.
