2 games. 4 Catches, 38.7 YARDS PER CATCH. 155 yards.

Not bad Sammie...Ability to get separation, Catches the deep ball. Shows a real willingness as a Blocker.

Filling in nicely for Martavis Bryant, so far.

Would love to see his YPC > 40 but that's decent I guess

Interesting on last weeks post game radio Charlie Batch said if Coates has a big year Bryant will never put on a Steeler uniform again.
He said the plan when they drafted Coates was to replace Bryant due to all his problems.

Love the guy. Ben has to be stoked the young guys are stepping up. Grimble, Coates Rodgers, James. Just more weapons for the big cat.

Still gotta work on his hands and also fighting for the ball.

The 44-yarder nearly went through his hands and I thought he could have fought a little to break up the one INT.

But so far I like what I see.

He's serving the Nate Washington/early Mike Wallace role well: run really fast and catch some bombs. The blocking, the third down grab last week, that's just gravy.

Dude is stiff but I really like what I'm seeing. Hopefully he stays involved in the mix when Wheaton is back.

That would be dumb as fuck. Bryant has the raw talent and size to be the best receiver in the league. He is a deep threat. He is a RZ mismatch. He can take a slant 70 yards to the house. I like Coates. He doesn't have the talent of Bryant. Also, given Bryant's ... issues... he will come cheaply. If -- and I recognize it is a big if -- Bryant stays off the drugs, Steelers could get a Number 1 WR for the price of a second rate third receiver. Gamble well worth it IMO.

Go back to bed, Charlie. Bryant is under contract and superior in every way.

That may change, especially if legalization nationally is in the plans.

Sammie will never have Bryant's downfield elite speed. Also Bryant has amazing open field moves and vision for a big guy. But Sammie does have good speed and he looks to be a reliable strong WR. Maybe a better blocker than Bryant.

Nice role player, a la DHB. Bryant stays clean, he and AB are starting week 1.

Sammie may be more productive than DHB, not sure yet.

Maybe but remember Santanio Holmes our super bowl MVP, Steelers dumped him for smoking weed and getting 4 game suspension.

but if the rules catch up to reality, Bryant will just be another Bobby Layne. Could have a few great years and then fade into obscurity.

and realized the immediate reality of that poor decision by it costing them a Super Bowl victory, in all likelihood. (of course it also got them AB, maybe)

I was at the game today.

Coates gives up on plays. If Sammie thinks he is covered then play over. The first deep ball that Ben threw to him Sammie stopped running his route then saw the ball in the air. Sammie had an "oh shit! reaction and raced for the pass. The pass fell incomplete.

He doesn't understand that no play is OVER with Ben. Sammie has to learn to work through secondary interference to keep making plays.

The dude has unreal talent that is close to Alien's. But until he consistently displays that talent and effort he's only going to be a flash in the pan player.

By no means am I underestimating the guy. but he needs to provide the same unrelenting effort play by play to reach his potential.

You say that like its a bad thing. Young Frankenstein was 1974. But young people are allowed to watch it too.

I watched "Stir Crazy" (1980) last week with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Recommended.

The offense made it look easy against a leaky Redskins defense but the bengals are a solid NFL caliber defense. Ben and Antonio missed Martavis Bryant today. He brings a fear factor that Coates doesn't. Leveon Bell will bring an added dimension but without Bryant the offense while very good, is incomplete:

He'll figure it out. Shaky hands make me more nervous, but he also had a play where he saw Ben in trouble, cut off his route and went deep for a nice 40+ gainer.

He's still a playmaker, something that Wheaton hasn't been.

Coates comes along, and Jesse James is looking like a baller....with Bell back this offense will be just as dangerous as we hoped. They played bad today, Ben threw the ball worse than I've seen in 2+ years (for half a game, anyway)....and still put up 24 against a tough division rival and top-10 defense.

Coates had 2 catches for 97 yards today and has 4 catches for 38.7 yds/catch in total. If Martavis had those stats, we'd be ok with that.

I agree with you Drama, that defenses don't fear Coates like they do Bryant who is more explosive. But I'm not looking at it like we are incomplete. Bryant is great but he's not here as a result of his own irresponsible actions, and he had bad games too.

The Steelers WRs are still Dangerous with Coates, Rogers, DHB, and Wheaton when he comes back. There is enough talent there to compliment AB and Ben. I expect big things from the WRs this year and so far Coates has been effective with the deep ball and as a blocker.

Coates has great potential, but also a bit of a sloth attitude.

Hopefully with some success he'll understand the virtues of working hard consistently. But if not there will be others to take his place.

Wheaton runs better and more consistent routes than Coates. Bryant is similar to Coates but just much, much better. We will draft other candidates in the late rounds as we are very good at "coaching up" at this position.

I hope he gets his shit together but if not, it's not as crucial as, say, Jervis's lack of development. That has hurt this team much, much more.

I am not disagreeing with anything said here. But, I am fairly happy with what is going on with the offense so far. Somewhat dynamic and built to play a few different styles of offense against a few different defensive looks/game-plans.

This thread does have me wondering though??? Imagine!!! Bell all year with D-Will behind him. Ladarius Green full strength in his prime with Jesse James & Grimble too. WR corp of AB, Bryant, Coates, Wheaton & Rodgers. Put all that together with a healthy Ben for the next 3 - 4 season. And where the hell is Rosie Nix? I had great expectations for him this year. Get that "Tubmonster" on the damn field too.

We need to add two Beast pass rushing OLB. One in free agent and one top draft pick next off-season and maybe try to find one more secondary beast, somewhere. This team could be a dynasty again for the next foreseeable future. The offense that "could be" is scary good. GOAT good! Colbert HAS to find us a pass rush. It's holding us back this year from being SB shoe-ins. Can't leave Bens last seasons to fate and/or hope. Do the anti Huntington and go out and buy a pass rush piece to finish this thing off.
