Blurb: Cockrell tender

Post by Steeldrama » Fri Mar 03, 2017 5:26 pm

Steelers extended the original-pick tender to restricted free agent LCB Ross Cockrell.
The lowest-possible tender sets up Cockrell for a $1.8 million base salary. It's somewhat surprising Cockrell didn't land a second-round tender after emerging as Pittsburgh's top corner the past two years, at times chasing No. 1 receivers. Still, Cockrell seems unlikely to generate significant interest on the restricted free agent market. The price for another team to acquire Cockrell would be a fourth-round pick and a big contract, and the Steelers can match any offer sheet Cockrell might receive.

This team better find another CB to groom- gotta have 3 of them on your roster with today's NFL. Love me some Gay, but he can't play forever.

And spare me the Senquez talk...he's yet to make it through any September

It will probably take a little more than $2M a year to sign a #2/#3 corner (which is what he really is). I don't think an R4 pick will scare many teams off, but it should set the market for a longer-term contract.

Although PIT can match and I don't expect big offers for a guy with 2 career interceptions. But the R2 tender would seem to be more in line with what they would otherwise have to pay the guy in a longer-term deal....except maybe they aren't ready to make that commitment and are hoping to save $800k or so this season.

I think Burns is a keeper, but maybe they don't know if he's a #1 or #2 yet. They definitely need to take a corner, and probably a safety (I've long been done with Mitchell).

Agreed you need 3 corners in today's NFL....they may be thinking Cockrell would be a slot guy but unsure if he can play there?

I think R4 tender is smart. Everyone knows the Steelers are likely to match a reasonable offer, so unlikely to spend resources trying to sign Cock unless they shoot the moon. However, Cock isn't the type you (a) shoot the moon in salary for and (b) have to pay a 4th round pick on top of it.

It's a slight gamble, but likely worth it.
