Opening Drive vs G-men

Post by stillthere » Wed Aug 06, 2014 11:55 pm

What do people want to see as the opening drive of the game. You may set parameters (ie we win toss and recieve or are trailing by 3 when we get ball etc.) Do people want to see the running game as the first play or just go up top off the bat see if we can score on the first play?

I personally would like to see a heavy dose of play action in the opening series so the defense has to respect both the hand off and the pass and slow down to think before committing.

Either way I assume this can be a subject with wide variety of opinions.

I want to see an 80 yd drive that results in a TD. One or two flash plays but just move the ball at will. The order of passing and rushing does not matter. A sustained drive that results in the TD.

Decent 40-50 yard drive, stalling out around the 25, FG

The opening drive will have to wait because Dri Archer takes the opening kickoff deep in the end zone and goes 106 yards untouched for a TD!

I want to come out and run the ball getting 5 to 7 yards a carry and then get a second and 3 on their side of the 50 go PA catching the safety cheating up and BAM a 45 yarder to Bryant or Wheaton .

Basically tell the NFL "how do you want it? we can pound you for 35 minutes or we can end it quick

My wife almost always just wants it quick.

"Are you close?". To which I reply "do you want me to be?".

The opening drive of the first preseason game, otherwise known as the end of the season.

Main thing I want to see is competent o-line play. I want to see some Munchak effect. Seems like most of these preseasons it looks like most of our o-line have never played a live game of football before and its one disaster after another. I just want to see them look sure-footed, not get Ben killed, and open up a hole or two for Bell.

heard a stat today... last two years, Archer has 4 TDs in 14 KO returns... 22% of the time he goes yard.

Hoping for a link so I can see Saturday. Or I'll have to wait til it's re-aired on NFL Network.

exactly. On the 2nd drive, I want to see us establish the ability to run at will from passing formations, shotgun, 1-back sets, etc, and on the 3rd drive, I want to see Ben in the no-huddle, throwing downfield and mixing runs to move the chains at will.

What do I want?

3 quarters of starting Oline working zone blocking 2 out of 3 snaps.

A) This thread's about the Steelers' opening drive.
2. Prepare to be disappointed.

I know they aren't going to keep them in three quarters.

But there is nothing that needs more work then the run blocking.

I'd like to see them act like there's 2:00 left in the game and they need a TD as soon as possible, and just put the D back on their heels immediately, like a "shock and awe" thing, like they have 8 guys up in the box, waiting for "Stillers Football" and then get rocked for a TD in 4-5 plays. Oh, well, then I woke up and it was run-run-incomplete screen pass, punt.

I'm really hoping for run-run-incomplete-punt just to see the reaction here.

If that happens, I plan to not post about it, for three reasons,

A) You all already know what I'd think of that
B) I wouldn't be at all surprised, in fact I expect that
C) This team has a knack to never be ready to execute at the start of any season, let alone pre-season

I would enjoy seeing a competent OLine block consistently. No sacks allowed, no pressures/hurries and no penalties. I would enjoy seeing a defense stopping the run and accomplish at least one turn over. I would enjoy seeing ST's play well giving the offense good field position while shutting down any returns by the Giants ST's. Don't care what the score turns out being as long as the Steelers have at least one more point than the Giants at games end.
