Gil Brandt on Steelers vs Eagles

Post by Legacy User » Fri Aug 22, 2014 5:02 pm

Gil Brandt ‏@Gil_Brandt · 58s
Player most hurt by emphasis on pass def rules might be @steelers CB Ike Taylor. He struggled last year.

Gil Brandt ‏@Gil_Brandt · 24s
Steelers rookie LB Ryan Shazier had 6 tackles, 1 pass defensed vs Eagles. Looked good in coverage. Did overrun several plays, though.

Gil Brandt @Gil_Brandt · 8m

Thought @Eagles looked good on offense and better on defense compared to last year. Jordan Matthews looks like 2nd-round steal.

without a doubt

Watch Ike for the last 5 years in man coverage, always tugging on a jersey. This rule is the beginning of the end for him. As I was watching that game last night biggest thing going through my mind is its probably in your best interest to be a zone team these days.

The part I dont like is when the receiver forces his stem up into your shirt pocket when in off coverage, it forces you to hand fight with him and it drew a flag every single time.

Basically the beginning of flag football with some light tackling thrown in...lingerie bowl is seriously gonna become more physical very soon

Jordan Matthews does look good. I see a lot of Limas in Bryant.

I agree, I had Jordan Mathews ahead of Kelvin Benjamin at draft time.

Not impressed with Martavius Bryant. Maybe if Steelers trade for Sammy Watkins to draw triple teams away from him he may have a future

I'm afraid we have another case of bad hands. Sure he is big and fast, but I saw some incomplete passes last night that should have been complete. He's got the Limas Virus.

So frustrating that colbert would draft another big fast guy (Limas Bryant) who can't catch!!
I can see it now "Limas Bryant wide open against Ravens and ball goes through his hands"

What round was Limas drafted in? Let's hold the horses.

He had more drops than Limas coming out of college.

Was always the knock on him.

I said it earlier- we drafted a lot of athletic types in this draft, but every one of them had question marks when it came to their actual football play at their position.

Athletes also have to be football players to succeed at football.

But like I said last night- at least Bryant gets open enough to have balls thrown to him to drop.

Justin Brown can't even do that.

Justin Brown seems lazy to me. He nonchalantly makes his cuts most of the time. I would have rather seen Moye work with the ones last night. He has hustle.

I take both Moye and Heyward-Bey over JBrown. I don't get all the hype about this youngster in camp. Doing well in camp is fine but you have to translate that talent to field when your not playing your own team. What does that say about our secondary to boot? If JBrown had such success in camp. I see a million problems and zero solutions so far from Tomlin and company. Very alarming.

Disagree --

Ike's "end" was last year --

He's in the grave this year

Tend to agree. We might have to endure a Ryan Clark type year for Ike..he could be smothered by yellow flags all season long.

Mark my words. THIS will be the season that almost every fan of this team will say, "Ike Taylor needs to go .... now"

Actually, and this is tough considering everything he's done, and his loyalty, but he needs to go...NOW!

Realistically, we don't have a replacement on the roster for Ike.

Just reality, man.

Biggest weakness on the team is probably the corners, today.

#2 and #3 WRs and LT and TEs say Hi

it's quite a competition for that title

Ike of 5-6 years ago...I agree. The current version of Ike, under the current rules, any JAG will do.

I think the WR's will be fine. I see enough talent there to win. TE's... We don't have a Jimmy Graham, but again, enough to win.

OL will also be fine. I think. Not the deepest unit.

Only "unit" worse than CB's in terms of starting talent on game day is the punter.

that makes one of us

I think they're in real trouble until Bryant and or Bey is playing regularly in 3 WR packages, and even then it's sketchy. Wheaton is such a poor blocker and route runner-- also, it's not like his hands are above average. Nobody else has shown ANYTHING running with the 1s.

IKE can be an important member of this team this year, we need him to shade that NO1 receiver and allow coverage shells to other parts. He can do it.

What little Ike had left, has been taken away by the rule changes. Ike has always been a clutcher and grabber. The days of getting away with that are e gone. Ike on a quality WR will be a disaster.

It won t happen, because they are the Steelers, but it's probably time to move on.

Ben has a way of making receivers better. Been doing it from Day 1, really.

Shit, he got Cotchery 10 TD's, I'll bet he gets <1/2 that wherever he is these days.

So, I'm willing to see how that shakes out. Fine, I think. Provided you let your players play.

These starting WR's suck real fucking bad.

They scare no one. Every empty backfield first half the entire Eagle defense was within 5 yards of scrimmage. They didn't pay much extra attention to AB most of the night...they had a rookie LB manned up with him at times. No seperation at all when starters were in. We aren't just small...we are slow.

Nobody else has been allowed or even experimented with the ones so not even they can know for sure.

AB
Wheaton
Moore
Justin Brown
Dri Archer

top 5 on the depth chart? Looks like it.
