Pens vs Bruins (4/1/21)
Pens vs Bruins (4/1/21)
First and foremost, congrats to Buffalo for beating Philly last night.
Pens start a lengthy road trip this evening. Their next 6 (and 8 of their next 9) are on the road.
Since they last met on 3/16, Boston has gone 3-1-1 and missed a week due to COVID. Take that with a grain of salt, as 2 wins came vs. Buffalo and the other in a shootout over NJ. Boston started the season red hot, going 10-1-1. Since then, they have gone 8-8-4. Pittsburgh hasn't won at Boston since 11/25/2014 . That ain't good.
Vladar starts in net.
On the Pens side:
- Tanev is a game time decision
- Tristan Jarry made the trip with the team, but DeSmith will start tonight
- Blueger won't play. Not sure if he traveled with the team or not.
Beating the Bruins isn't complicated: Stop the Marchand-Bergeron-Pasta line. I didn't say it was easy, I just said it wasn't complicated.
Boston is 27th in the league in 5on5 scoring. Outside of that #1 line, they have no real scoring threats. PP is decent, ranked 15th. They are, however, very deep defensively and have an incredible PK....only allowing 11 PPG on the year, while scoring 5 short handed. That is by far the best Net PK% in the league.
Go Pens!

March was very good to the Penguins, very good.
What the fuck is wrong with the Flyers? Not complaining but they got their asses handed to them a good bit the past few weeks.

Defense and goaltending. They're tied with Detroit for worst PK in the league.
Also....here's something I said back on March 8th:
Guess what? All three of those guys have dipped below 20%. Farabee is the only one still close at 19.2%.Speaking of Philly, here's an interesting stat - they have 3 players (Konecny, Laughton, and Farabee) currently shooting over 20%. JVR and Couturier are sitting at 19.6 and 19.4, respectively. Having one player shooting at that high of a percentage is rare. Having 5 players do it.....that is in no way sustainable.
Konecny, Laughton, and Farabee have a combined 5 goals over the last 13 games. Konecny and Laughton haven't scored in their last 11
JVR has 3 in 13 games
Couturier has 4 in 12 games
So, yeah. Their D sucks, their goaltending collapsed, and their offense has gone cold (or reverted back to the mean, whichever you prefer).
You know what blows?
Being in Europe for hockey in the USA. Many games start at 1 am. Trying to adjust to local time zone but watching the pens at that hour fucks everything. It's 12:30 am now.
Yeah, I shouldn't be traveling but my mother is 93, sharp as a tack, and vaccinated. Twice. Whatever I do stateside I can do via internet and have take all protocols to the nth degree, vis a vi C19.
Ugh.

Arguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon. No matter how good you are, the pigeon is going to shit on the board and strut around like it won anyway.

I'm aware that their tending has been bad and that is curious. We have spoken about their weak spot-defensemen. With all the forward talent they have you would think they would have tried to make a move by now.Pabst wrote: ↑Thu Apr 01, 2021 10:05 pmDefense and goaltending. What is shocking to me is that they have been destroyed a few times in the past 10-12 days. The Rangers and Islanders throttled them. When you lose to Buffalo 6-1 you know you are in trouble.
I'm guessing something is wrong in the locker room, kind of like going back more than a decade when it was rumored that Richards was having his way with Harnell's wife.

Now I'm pissed, AT&T is cutting into the Pens pregame coverage to talk Pirates.

So the bold is accurate. AV is calling out The kid goalie for poor practice habits.....shit they practiced twice since Feb.fractalsteel wrote: ↑Thu Apr 01, 2021 10:35 pmI'm aware that their tendinghas been bad and that is curious. Older vets and some of the youngers are clashing
The team seems to have tuned out AVs system
Everything is wrong. Hart looks ruined by the toxic Flyers organization. Comcast is a cancer with all they touch
Snider family divested out. Clarke and Holmgren seem to meddle still. Current GM. Bahhhhh. Same old prob
Entire coaching staff sucks donkey balls
Did I say goaltending?

They’re playing worse than a beer league team
And I do think their covid downtime adds to the mess

I am not liking this Vladar guy. He makes too many saves against the Pens.

Matheson with a sick goal.
Speed kills, and these Pens look fast as hell. They’re committed defensively and the goaltending has been very good.
Is it time to get excited about this group? Don’t think I’d be scared of any team in the east come playoff time...

Been listening to the game on my phone.
Bourque was going crazy after the Matheson goal. I'll have to check the replay.

I'm not getting excited about anything until the Pens reach the 2nd round of the playoffs.
The last 2 premature exits have soured me a bit.
Matheson was flying on his goal. He’s so up and down it’s almost fun how chaotic his game is. (At least for the regular season)
Can anybody read lips on Tanev at the end?

Sullivan’s last chance to prove his way is still the way to win in the NHL despite everyone else getting bigger?
We shall see.

We’ve played great lately and we aren’t even healthy. It will be interesting to see what happens when the band is back together; gotta keep the momentum heading into April.

I've only watched highlights but they look like they are playing fast and smart hockey.
