Looks like they didn't pay much... shoring up the bottom six for conditional future picks. Haven't read what the conditions are yet. LA retains 50% of salary, as well. Pretty sure he can be exposed for the expansion draft, as well.

I guess we should have seen this coming. He is a Hextall favorite.

He still skates reasonably well, so he could be a system fit, if Sully deigns to give him ice time. Not really the physical-type presence that has been bandied about, though.

Well, he's younger than Patrick Marleau.

As with all trades, have to see how he fits.
I don't think the move needed to be made, they have plenty of forwards.

I agree, with one caveat: What if the injuries to Kap and Malkin are longer term than we thought?

If they expect one (or both) to miss time into the post season, then this trade makes some sense. I really don't want Sam Lafferty getting a lot of minutes in the playoffs.

On the other hand, this reminds me a bit of the Ron Hainsey & Mark Streit deals back in 2017: Daley, Maatta, and Letang all went down with injury at the end of February, so the Pens brought in two low-cost veteran defenders to shore up the depth. Maatta and Daley both came back, and Streit barely played in the playoffs that year.

Now.....if everyone is healthy, how's this for a F group?

Guentzel - Crosby - Rust
Zucker - Malkin - Kapanen
Rodrigues - McCann - Carter
Tanev - Blueger - ZAR

Now that i type that out, I realize we have the same question as last season: Does that 3rd line work, or is it just a hodgepodge of guys that don't fit onto other lines?

Not exactly a high bar to get over... slightly more exciting is they paid a lot less for Carter than Good Ol' JR did for Marleau. If they don't feel like keeping McCann at C, Carter gives them some flexibility there, too.

Anyone up for making this the trade deadline thread?

Boston acquires Mike Reilly for a 3rd from Calgary, and Taylor Hall/Curtis Lazar for a 1st round pick. They are clearly all-in.

If Kap and or Malkin are to miss time going into the playoffs our chances become very slim. I don't think Carter can fill in for either, not at this stage of his career. Factor in that he isn't the same player he was after the severe ankle injury back in 2017.
Can he be something of a Matt Cullen? I think that is his role if he has one.

It will be interesting to see how Sully uses Carter to start

I'm fine with this being our deadline thread... TSN just posted a picture touting all the former captains (of non-Cup teams) the Leafs have in their lineup now, crowing about leadership. Hall to Boston could definitely make some noise.

With another expansion draft this summer and Carter being under contract next year, this might actually be something of a hedge for next year too.

Any graphics on TSN about the Leafs' being carried by a career AHL goalie playing out of his mind?

Campbell is 11-0 with a .934 save % and 1.88 GAA. Those are Vezina caliber numbers from a 29 year old with a grand total of 64 NHL games entering this year. Best of luck keeping that going.

As for the Leafs leadership, I'd be genuinely floored if Thornton, Spezza, and Simmonds can all hold up for a long playoff run.

Hey, let's not discount the winning pedigrees of Nick Foligno and John "maybe the most overhyped "superstar" of the last 15 years" Tavares, either

Campbell has been unreal, though. Unsustainable, sure, but unreal.

The Leafs are absolutely screwed vs. the Cap for the next few years. They have $13.4m in cap space and only the following on the roster:

7 Forwards
5 Defenseman
2 Goalies

$13m to sign 8 skaters. Have fun with that

Dallas Cowboys of the NHL, but their fans think they're the New York Yankees (actually, come to think of it, they have that in common with Cowboys fans, as well). If you're reading these last few posts, sorry, Greek!

Key difference is both the Yankees and Cowboys have had some level of success in the last 50 years.

I view the Leafs fan base as more of a pre-2004 Red Sox: Fans that love to wallow in self pity, while simultaneously having expectations that are through the roof.

Well, we have 35 minutes left....Blackhawks are officially sellers.

Chicago sends Soderberg to Colorado for prospects.
Chicago also sends Mattias Janmark to Vegas for a 2nd and a swap of 3rd and 5th rounders.

Scott Laughton just got extended in Philly, for whatever that's worth.

Sam Bennett goes to Florida for a 2nd rounder.

Man, this deadline has been more boring than usual.

Spoke too soon:
NEWS | The Washington Capitals have acquired forward Anthony Mantha from the Detroit Red Wings for forwards Jakub Vrana and Richard Panik, a 2021 first round pick and a 2022 second round pic

OK, i don't understand this trade at all.

They unload the Panik contract, which is good for them. But then they give up a 1st, 2nd, and Vrana for.......basically a bigger version of Mantha? Am I missing something? Mantha is big, but he doesn't play a particularly physical game.

There have been several US <> Canada trades today: https://www.capfriendly.com/trades

Eric Staal only missed 3 games when he was traded from Buffalo to Montreal back in March.

And the Caps just gave up a 5th to Philly for Michael Raffl.

I haven't looked at the contracts, but from a pure talent standpoint:

Vrana for Mantha
Panik for Raffl

To me, that's pretty much a break even, and they gave up a 1st, 5th, and a 2022 2nd. WTF?

Pabst, after seeing the details, the Mantha trade is puzzling for the Craps (not that I'm unhappy about it). Same points in Mantha and Vrana, and Detroit gets Panik (as a WSMFP fan, a pet favorite bottom 6 guy) and a 1st this year and a 2nd next? To me, the head scratcher of the day.

And we got mad at Good Ole JR for overpaying in trades...

Trolling around some Caps boards, it looks like they are not big fans of the trade. That's a good sign :D

It's funny - If you read anything out of Detroit, they're glad they are getting a young forward who puts up solid offensive numbers in exchange for a player who is talented, but inconsistent. If you read anything from DC.....they're glad they are getting a young forward who puts up solid offensive numbers in exchange for a player who is talented, but inconsistent. The difference is that the Wings landed a few draft picks in the deal.

Hextall said today that Tanev is done for the regular season, and Kap is at least 10-14 days, so that puts some context around the Carter trade.

I really like the Carter move. I know the talk is that he's an over-the-hill guy but you can't help but love how the guy plays and see that he offers some of that famous grit teams are always talking about adding to their lineups for the stretch run/postseason. To my eye, looking at his 2020-21 highlights, it appears that he can still skate at a high level, he uses his long reach well, he has the willingness to drive to the net, and shoots the puck a lot. What's not to like?

I can't say I have seen Carter play in a long time but the word I'm finding is that his skating has declined a great deal since the ankle tendon injury in 2017.

He seems eager to be here.

So, it is Gaudreau's turn to be injured. No word what it is.

Interesting that Hextall is more forthcoming with injury news than Sully.

Do they view Carter as a RW or a C?
