Well-deserved! I heard last night that he's won 26 straight games in a Team Canada uniform, and the team has never lost a game since he was named captain. That's incredible.

This tourney is going to challenge that, though-- really talented teams.

I was sort of cool on the 4 Nations thing but it is definitely better than the All Star game and I definitely love high-level hockey (I almost always watch the Conference Finals and Stanley Cup Finals no matter which teams are playing). Reminds me a lot of what professional soccer does with international breaks scattered through their seasons.

Last night's game was incredible. Just the right mix of star players energy/speed and drive to win. Not so clogged by defensive slop like the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

This is indeed a great honor and I’m happy for Sid, but does anyone know why they didn’t name it after Mario?

I just checked. Mario’s stats in junior were outrageous.

His last season in the QMJHL:

In 83/84 he played 87 games including the playoffs and Memorial Cup and got 163 goals, 174 assists for 337 points.

His totals in the QMJHL?

He finished his QMJHL career with 562 points (247 goals, 315 assists) in only 200 games across three seasons.

Sid’s totals for 120 games

He scored 120 goals, 183 assists, and 303 points in just 120 games.

Not too shabby, but holy cow Mario blew him out of the water! If we compare the last season Mario played with the 2 seasons Crosby played, he scored 43 more goals and only 9 less assists in 33 less games! Amazing.

Well I don’t know Canadian Junior Hockey very well but I assumed they named their MVP Award after Mario???

Edit: I went and checked. No awards named after Mario(!). The MVP award is named after Michel Brière, though, so that’s a Penguins connection. Leading QMJHL scoring award named after Jean Beliveau.

I preface this post by saying I haven't followed the Pens or hockey in about 20 years.

Oh sure I bandwagon watched the last 3 Stanley Cup wins, but I wasn't there for the grind like in the '90s.

The two best rookies (and players) of my lifetime are literally named "The Great One" and "Le Magnifique."

Shouldn't this or ANY award start and end with either the name Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux?

I'm sure Sid's a swell player with lots of stats on his resume, but is his name on the award just because it resonates with a younger generation of fans?

Anyway, from a far it seems to me the Pens have held onto their aging stars WAY too long.

Hopefully, for you diehards, the Pens are able to find their next Mario and Jagr/Sid and Malkin sooner rather than later.

Sid is a top five NHL player of all time. Sure he isn’t Mario but still legit one of the five greatest.

Also Sid is still a top five center in the NHL. We can’t put shit around him though.
