‘Ol Thaddeus declares

Post by Steeldrama » Fri Jan 17, 2020 10:22 pm

LSU TE Thaddeus Moss declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.
Moss (6'3/294) came through in style during the National Championship Game on Monday, catching five passes for 36 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He'll now move on to try his luck in the pros. Bleacher Report's Matt Miller writes glowingly of Moss' "up-the-seam speed, big body and ability to beat defenders with a big catch radius." He sees a potential Day 2 selection in the cards, here.

Hardly surprising
Is he y’alls top TE prospect?
I’m personally a Kmet guy but definitely like Randy’s kid

I have three I like a lot as TE1, those two are obviously two of them
A couple I like but a little less, including Pinkney.

I have at least 2 or three I like a lot as TE2/H-Back.

+ Willing blocker. Shows some desire and aptitude for it.
+ Good hands
+ Good teammate
+ Solid athleticism
+ Good genes
+ Intelligent. Can find holes in zones and knows when to sit.
+ Only one year of real playing time, so room to grow

- Only one year of real playing time
- Not much of a red zone threat. Only 4 TDs on the year, and none of them were the sort of “Mossing” you’d want from a red zone guy.
- Does not gain much separation and can be kept in check when focused by a remotely athletic LB.
- Not even a 1 year wonder, more of a half year wonder. On the good side, it came in the second half of the season and this was his first season as a starter.
- Some “headcase” concerns. Transferred multiple times in HS. Transferred again in college. Sat out a year due to xfer rule.
- Injuries kept him out all of 2018 season, but stayed healthy this year.

I like him, but feel 2 is too early for what he brings to the table. He’s a 3rd or 4th round guy to me, but will be over drafted.

If he's still there when our third comp rolls around, I think you gotta take him. I'd rather have Jalen Reagor in the second.

I think Moss is a huge risk.
Could be gold...could be a whole lotta Xavier Grimble.
No matter. Steelers won’t use their 2 on him...he’ll be gone before their next pick.

I still have Kmet as the #1 TE for the Steelers. I like Hopkins(Purdue) and Hunter(Washington) but not the non-blocking/big WR type of TEs.

I think Moss fits that profile a whole lot better. He's more Aaron Hernandez (on the field) than Gronk. He's a very willing blocker but I'm not sold yet. I wish he were playing in an All-Star game practice week (yeah, yeah, I know LSU's practices and a game vs Clemson is an All-Star week, but we don't get any reports or insight for how he practices against fresh blood.

The real Steelers (aka not necessarily me in the board draft) have to be into Kmet, the Stanford kid, and the two TEs who played in the NFLPA game, Charles Woerner from Georgia and Nate Wieting from Iowa. Woerner might get drafted late and Wietling is a UDFA but they'd be useful #2 or #3 TEs.

I think the steelers need a playmaking receiving Te and you can always find a blocking TE.

That's not how their offense works, though. They build from the TE blocking in the run game outward.

Phenomenal size, but didn't do much, even when he saw playing time with Terrace Marshall hurt. He has the athleticism -- he was a WR the past two years and had an OK junior campaign 23/363/2. But 12/130/0 this year in the most prolific offense in CFB history concerns me. He has a lot of work to do to master TE, and he's not athletic enough to be an NFL WR. Not a great route runner. Not fast. Never really impressed me as a blocker.

I'd take a late round flier on him, but I don't have very high hopes.

You must have missed Northwestern state–– he looked damn good in that game where he started, albeit aginst lesser comp.

I mean he's a 6'6 250 lb guy playing split out against an FCS school. I don't credit that game too much

I was equally impressed with the blocking from the Z spot. I think the potential is there as a #2. Raw as can be but the receiving skills are up there with the best TEs in this class. Apparently he looked good in Mobile yesterday.
