Steelers disaster draft
The parameters ??
A Steelers draft that could very well happen that you'd view as a misstep in every round but is probably still better than where we are right now
24 Etienne RB
55 Myers C
88 McGrone LB
129 Trask QB
140 Schwartz WR
216 Farrell TE
246 Thompson S
255 Himmelman OT

Himmelman and Etienne wouldn’t be real disasters.
Trading up with a second and a 3rd to draft Justin Fields at 15—-now that would be a disaster.

Here is mine. The Steelers enter Day 1 with their top 3 needs in mind: RB, C and CB, in that order. Etienne and Harris would have been the picks, but they are off the board. That would be a blessing in disguise for those of us who don't believe in R1 RB, but without a clear need/BPA fit, they fall in love with the intangibles of a guy who has great character, but lots of medical red flags which make it seem unlikely he'll have a long, distinguished NFL career. As always, they don't even consider trading back.
1. Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama
Okay, now it's RB or CB in round 2. The decision comes down to Elijah Moulden, Eric Stokes or Kenny Gainwell. Canada pounds the table for Gainwell, but Tomlin says he's too small to be a bell cow for attrition football. Like, he's legitimately afraid the guy won't make it out of the Baltimore game alive. At CB, they opt for a guy with Haden's athleticism because they want him to take over for him after next year. But, he's probably not a great slot fit year one, leaving them without an ideal guy for this year, or forcing him onto the field early and Cam into the slot in nickel personnel, creating lots of problems, especially when there are injuries.
2. Eric Stokes, CB, Georgia
We've waited too long already. It's got to be an RB no matter what in round 3, says KC, suddenly afraid he'll be pushed out the door by Art II if he doesn't put 'resources' towards the mandate to fix the run game. He can sell a center and RB in the first three rounds as trying hard. Sermon and Stevenson are the top two guys on the board. Tiebreaker goes to the love for Ohio State. Nevermind that this guy hasn't stayed healthy and played well for more than a 2-3 game stretch, and he's being drafted to be the bell cow in the NFL.
3. Trey Sermon, RB, Ohio State
Okay, heading into day 3 we have our second tier needs: TE, Edge, S, and Buck ILB. Maybe an OT, but we believe in Banner and are looking to win now. Steelers love their bloodlines and are willing to overlook some athletic limitations for a guy that they believe is ready to block day 1. And again, let's fix the run game.
4a. Hunter Long, TE, Boston College
The board falls so that the guys like they for mid-round Buck are gone. They hoped for Browning, but he went late round 2 - that was a pipe dream. They opt for a local Pittsburgh player who they've seen up close. They figure worst case he can be a good third-down rusher. But, in camp they realize he's just another Bruce Davis. A guy with a quick first step but no other NFL-level tools.
4b. Patrick Jones II, OLB, Pittsburgh
Again, no Buck ILBs they like. KJ Britt went a few picks earlier, and he was their guy. Damn the long wait between picks. Let's pick another safety/ILB hybrid type. Eventually, we'll find one that works, right?
6. Jamien Sherwood, S, Auburn
Okay - ILB time. We are smart enough to realize we probably aren't getting a starting Buck at this point. So, let's let Danny Smith pick. Maybe we'll get another Matakevich.
7a. Paddy Fisher, ILB, Northwestern
KC sends the scouts home, thinking they are done. Shit! We have another pick, dammit. It's been a long weekend. Well, since everyone else is gone, I'm just taking the top offensive lineman left on the board. He's a decent value, but a poor fit for the Steelers' needs as he's probably more of a guard at the NFL level.
7b. Carson Green, OT (but not really), Texas A&M

OK...who else threw up in their mouth when Enigma mentioned Bruce Davis?
Disaster draft?
Any that has the names Etienne, Freiermuth, and Radunz in it.

Sherwood has been a good football player at Auburn. He ran 4.75 at 2 fucking 16 at his pro day. Just cant have that in the nfl anymore at S and expect good resultsStillenigma wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 4:06 amHere is mine. With you on just about all counts. And I'm not sure I'd mind a reasonable trade up for Fields. Don't have a ton of optimism on next year's QB class.

Let’s be honest...these are the Steelers we’re talking about, they will give Rudolph (or Haskins) a couple of seasons to sink or swim.
I know, but hey, it's the off-season. Dream big, right?

Hah! Honestly, I would actually like Jake Funk, so that wouldn't be a disaster. He's got more juice than McFarland even. He's a better back. But I know the PS will draft a RB in the first three rounds, so there's no chance.jebrick wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 1:47 pmNot very realistic because it does not draft a Maryland playerStillenigma wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 4:06 amHere is mine. Let me get you 100% out of that mindset. I think next year's QB class is going to be very, very good. Not 100% who is coming out, but I'll bet you right now there are at least 5 guys who will give you some optimism if the Steelers draft them next year.
And there's sure to be a Trey Lance or Zach Wilson or Joe Burrow or Mac Jones that no one saw coming this far out from the draft. For example, the guy who built BYU OL scheme and then became the OC who developed Zach Wilson moved to Baylor and is going to do the same thing there, this time with Jacob Zeno. Then there are the QBs of the three best non-power 5 teams last year, who all return with great teams around them. Then there are the big school guys who have put up some numbers or some wow. Or the guys tearing it up at the FCS level this spring, who will come back and get another complete season after this one to develop and build their profile. Then there are incredible tools guys who might put it together and develop into something during this season that we can't even imagine.
I have 32 QBs on my 2022 watch list who aren't terrible and I think I'm going to have some degree of enthusiasm for about 10 of them. At least 1/2 of those will graduate or declare. Steelers could trade up from being a playoff team and still get high enough to get a really good QB.
