Cam Akers, best RB in this draft??

Post by Scunge » Thu Jan 23, 2020 7:50 pm

Call me crazy but I think Akers is the best RB.

I don't see any warts. You see him running with power, breaking long runs, great vision, patience. I see him making great catches, one handed catches. You saw FSU having him throw passes and he was successful doing that. By all accounts a very naturally gifted RB who was able to shine with not the best of O-lines.

Tomlin loves him some FSU and I can't help but feel that if they are going to draft a RB that Akers is in his sights. You take Akers and pair him with Conner in 2020 and the offense is magnitudes better. Snell and Samuels are not difference makers, RB is a huge need.

I like Cam Akers more now that Travis Etienne shocked me by returning to school.

I still REALLY like the LSU kid Clyde Edwards Helaire.

I think to get either back you have to be willing to spend pick 49 to get them. Running backs can slide but to get either with the 3rd round comp pick would be grand larceny

Jonathan Taylor
I haven't read any opinions here about this player. I would like to hear what you guys think of him.

This won’t be popular, but I think they really picture Benny Snell as the axis of the offense when 7 retires in a year or two. He’s going to be their Jerome Bettis, if you will...

Dig him Fractal
D'Andre Swift I still think is top rb but I'm UGA biased.
Taylor, Dobbins, and Clyde-EH all really close for next.
Cam Akers close too.
All gone by end of rd 2 I'm guessing

Could have been a really deep group if Najee, Etienne, and Chuba didn't stay in school.

I badly want the rb position to be upgraded but will concede the Steelers will go status quo due to lack of picks and needs elsewhere.

I like Swift a great deal and followed his career at Prep. College friend of mine son played with Swift at St Josephs Prep. Says he was a good teammate.
PSU fans really wanted Swift to come there but he was firm on Georgia early on. Rumor was that Franklin was the reason why he didn't give PSU a chance.

To me Swift seems like that NFL RB who gets 1200 yards rushing and 60 receptions per season for 5-7 years.

I wouldn't be upset one bit if Taylor was there with the Steelers initial pick and they took him. Like you said, he probably won't be there.

Draftniks seem to agree with you on Swift, Drama, and I'd guess that the three that stayed, stayed specifically because of how deep the group at RB was.

For what it’s worth, in an interview today with Dan Patrick, Joe burrow said without hesitation that Edwards-Helaire was the best athlete on LSU this year. Curious how he tests.

Akers tested pretty well, ran a 4.47 and the Steelers are interviewing him.

He really does tick all the boxes for them, they love to spend their top picks on very young players, which in this draft is their second, but still valid I think. They love to take those young 20-21 year prospects, think Timmons, Tuitt, JuJu, etc.

I think the WR talent will still be holding up pretty well by our 3rd round pick, but getting a starting RB that late is a pipe dream. Akers would look very good with Conner, a very nice one-two punch. I still think Benny Snell should put on weight and get stronger and be a fullback, replace Rosie Nix. Snell will never be a legitimate starting RB but he could be a very good starting Fullback who also is good on special teams. Just my 2 cents.

I think the Steelers realize that they need playmakers on offense, RB, TE and WR. Akers at 49 would be a great pick.

If you want a Jerome Bettis, AJ Dillon is your man. Just over 6ft, 247lbs. Ran a 4.53. Zero fumbles at BC, I believe.

Perhaps some team in the RB market has a trade scenario the Steelers just can't pass up at 49? :ugeek:

Conner going into the last year of his deal, Samuels being a huge disappointment last year, and Snell being a JAG?

I would be surprised if we didn't add another RB.

Assuming they draft one of the top 5 RB, who are they cutting?

If they drafted a RB that high? That'd be easy: either Samuels or Snell. Probably Samuels since Snell has ST value.

Snell is not A JAG imo But with Connor being injured and last year of his deal.It would not shock me if someone fell the steelers would not Hesitate.

Returning to this, but Taylor posted some numbers at the combine that were pretty surprising. I hadn't thought of him as that athletic. He did himself some favors. Lot of tread already off those tires, though.

Why not. If you assume they are going to cut one of their RBs, why would you not draft the best RB on the board. Getting one after the 2nd round is a waste and a luxury pick.

I dunno about your assertion that there’s no one after rd 2. The previous years of the draft go totally against that. So many of the best RBs in the league—especially ones who are talented in the pass game—have been drafted outside the top 75. This is a pretty deep RB class and undoubtedly there will be some day 3 guys who would be an upgrade to the rotation.

do they get Eno Benjamin? He is basically Samuels? Moss? He is Snell.

I just do not see them giving up on any of their Rbs this year. It is a luxury pick which they can't really afford in this draft.
