...to landing David Price, and their offer was probably better than what the Rays eventually got.

But the Rays wanted Major Leaguers, and that's why they went with the three-team deal.

I wonder if this is the start of a trend, and the Pirates have now got to start building their depth at the Major League level.

Looks like teams might want Major League ready talent now.

I just think it depends on the team and how far away from contention they believe they are.
For instance, a team like the Red Sox believes they are in contention next year. They aren't interested in a prospect who may or may not be ready three years from now.

Now as for the Rays, without looking it up, aren't two of the three players they received in the deal minor league prospects?
