Happy 78th Sangy!
Happy 78th Sangy!
Manny Sanguillen turns 78 today. Overshadowed by Bench during his playing days, but literally just as good, if not better except for the power numbers, through 1972. Sangy was never the same after Roberto's tragic death but though his D suffered a little bit, Sangy could always hit. Off the zone? No problem, line drive to the opposite field. Even when he was a 3rd string catcher for the 79 series, when called upon in a key situation, he came up with the timely hit to win Game 2. Lifetime BA sits at 4th highest all time for any catcher in the major leagues since WW2, and the 10th highest BA of any ML catcher all time. My favorite all time Buccos catcher. Happy Birthday Sangy!

Thanks MJ for posting that and indeed Happy 78th to Manny! Wonderful memories of all those guys from our super 70s Pirate teams. So many great ballplayers and so many characters!
Author Roy Blount, in his classic Three Bricks Shy of a Load (a book about, you know, the '73 Steelers), nonetheless found a way to include a quote from Sanguillen who was asked why he kept swinging at so many balls out of the strike zone, even though it lowered his stellar batting average. Manny beamed with that trademark big smile on his face and answered, "I know, but I can't stop, because it feels so good!"
