Game 59: Pirates vs. Mets

Post by JackLambert58 » Wed Jun 08, 2016 9:28 am

At PNC Park
Game time: 7:05PM ET
Probable starters:
NYM: Noah Syndergaard (6-2, 1.91 ERA)
PIT: Jameson Taillon (0-0, -.-- ERA)

In the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft, 36 spots separated Jameson Taillon and Noah Syndergaard. The Pirates took Taillon No. 2 overall, and the Blue Jays drafted Syndergaard at No. 38 in the supplemental first round. Their paths have since diverged, but the former elite pitching prospects will clash Wednesday as the Pirates and Mets finish their series.

After rising through Minor League ranks, Syndergaard was a candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year Award in 2015. This season, he has a 6-2 record, a 1.91 ERA and a WHIP of 0.96.

Meanwhile, after battling back from two years of injuries, Taillon will be recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to make his Major League debut on Wednesday. With a doubleheader on Tuesday, a makeup game in Colorado on Thursday and a series vs. the Cardinals beginning Friday, fresh arms are in short supply for Pittsburgh.

"I'm going to try to slow the game down the best I can, go out there, really keep doing what I've been doing in Triple-A," Taillon said. "The hitters get a little bit better, and there's more fans in the stands. Fill up the strike zone and be confident."

With a doubleheader on Tuesday, make-up game in Colorado on Thursday and series vs. the Cardinals beginning Friday, fresh arms are in short supply in Pittsburgh. However, it's unclear if Taillon will stay in the Pirates' rotation or if this is a spot start.

"It might be a hidden lining that you didn't pitch for a period of time," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's got a full gas tank."

Taillon may have been called up long ago were it not for Tommy John surgery in April 2014 and, just as he was nearing a comeback, surgery to repair an inguinal hernia last July. In 2016, Taillon has walked six batters and has a 4-2 record with a 2.04 ERA and a WHIP of 0.81. It's unclear if Taillon will stay in the Pirates' rotation or if this is a spot start, but Hurdle won't hold him to unreasonable expectations in his first start at PNC Park.

"We do believe he's worked hard," Hurdle said. "The opportunity is his."

Things to know about this game
• The Mets are 1-8 at PNC Park since the beginning of the 2014 season.

• Pirates second baseman Josh Harrison entered Tuesday with the third-highest batting average (.313) and the fourth-most RBIs (25) among NL second basemen.

• Syndergaard is 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in five road starts this season.

Taillon spotted a 2-0 lead over Fabio Syndegaard.

Helped by a Neil Walker error.

Mets have tied the game on a two run homer.

Taillon has struggled a bit in every inning, so not surprising.

Pirates have had numerous opportunities to have more runs on the board.
Unfortunately, too many line drives @ people in key situations.

Taillon gets the no decision. 3-3 after 6 innings.

I completely agree. I understand that the Pirates are "small market" and have budget restraints, etc etc, but fuck, use the young guns.

Sunday afternoon and again tonight.
Didn't help that after 4 straight balls to Mercer that the home plate umpire called strike 1 on Serpico on the 5th straight ball.
Can we please get a ground swell of support for automating ball/strike counts, or are we too busy pushing for the DH in both leagues?
BTW, that home plate umpire was a disaster all night long including tossing Joyce and issuing the warning on the Huey pitch.

That said, once again, the Pirates should have/could have won this game in 9 innings but for a couple of line drives @ people with runners in scoring position and, but for the pig pen once again snatching defeat from victory's jaws. That's the single biggest difference I see so far this season -- this pitching staff, especially in high leverage situations, is inconsistent at best.

As for the Mets, they stole this game. Twice down 2 runs they tied the game with 2-run HRs. Quick offense is a pretty good thing to have on a reliable basis and it got them over tonight.

agree...the bucs pitching is way below last years.. the pen is bad.. I like the offense most nights. Polanco is flat out stroking it.. jaso is huge positive. freese is solid along with joyce.. we need cutch to be more cutch..pitching needs to improve!

The offense was good tonight, especially vs. the Mets pitching. The offense scored 5 runs and easy could have scored 5 more.

A sweep would have been just what the doctor ordered, especially with this ridiculous 1-day flight to Denver and back with Nibbles going @ Coors Field. Cutch loves hitting @ Coors Field, so I'm sure Hurdle will give him a day off. Actually, the visit to Coors could come @ a good time for Cutch.

How good would Happ have looked this year in a Pirate uniform? He might be the #1 starter @ this point if he were here?

Except for Frankie, the starters have been better as of late.

It's the bullpen that is really fucking the team this year.

The pen is a mess. Move Nicasio to the pen. Hopefully he can excel there. With Locke pitching well now he has some trade value. If they can get a decent reliever for him in a trade they need to do it before the predictable Jeff Locke 2nd half swoon begins. Maybe that will be enough to patch the bullpen. Then cross your fingers that Frankie gets straightened out and two of the prospects pitch well in the rotation.

The two things that really mess this staff up:

Frankie
Tony Watson

Both of them have fallen off a cliff.
