I just can't see NH giving up top prospects for a rental.
Interesting about Alvarez. He could go in a trade with Boston only if the Sox move Bogaerts back to SS and shitcan Drew.
I'm with Pro. I think a huge trade is brewing between the Pirates and Red Sox.

Agreed. I liked Masterson a lot though. Now I have to hate him.

Agree, STL was always one of those teams that never really bothered me a whole bunch, until about 3 years ago ...I can't stand those fuckers
Looks like Lester is headed to the Orioles.

Wonder why the Bosox would trade him in division...unless they expect to re-sign him as a FA next year?

From everything I'm reading and hearing, Lester going back to the Sox in FA is an almost certainty.

Probably to assure that the Yankees don't win the AL East
This is my thing, why gut out your farm for a guy that's going to return to the team that's trading him, knowing you have absolutely no chance in signing after his rental? Sure he would be great, but I don't think he by himself puts this team over the top.
Now reading that the A's are moving in for him
If they trade 3 prospects for Lester - a 2 month player for the Bucs - I am going to be sick.

That's why I don't expect it to happen. Huntington won't allow himself to be fleeced, but someone else will.

Yeah, let's make a run at a WS championship in 2021.

Doesn't that depend on the prospects/

Lester doesn't make this team a world series contender.

They have the best record in baseball since like the middle of May. They ARE a contender. They aren't a favorite, but they are a contender.

Very True - I keep hearing Bell, Kingham, and Jacoby Jones for Lester - that would make me sick.
Now hearing about Ian Kennedy per Ken Rosenthal - he should be a lot cheaper. Personally I would rather bring the young guys up and develop them and try to win with them. I think the Bucs have a strong system - use it.

They aren't a contender with the nonsense we saw today.
Not to mention if the playoffs started today, they wouldn't make the playoffs.

Okay, but they don't start today. St. Louis wouldn't make the playoffs if they started today either. Are they a World Series contender?

They're a WS contender right now. Just like every other team in the playoff hunt. The addition of last year's World Champs' ACE would certainly make them a STRONGER contender. Today is one fucking loss Cody. They happen in a 162-game schedule.

Between today and the boneheaded decision losses and blown saves, this is about ten games.
Not just one game.

Screw prospects, I would trade all top 10 for just one World Series championship this year.

well if the devil guaranteed a WS championship in blood, I'd do it too. But even making a move, the odds are against winning it all. Then what? Then you'll need talked off the bridge. Its a gamble.
I would rather be the Braves/Pirates of the 90s or Cards of today( Having the talent to compete for years) rather than be the Marlins( one and blow up the team to the basement).
Having a good Farm system and keeping it by not making stupid trades for rent-a-players will keep the Pirates in contention. Now if they trade for a player they can control and keep, that is a different story.

So much for Lester. Looks to me like Oakland got him and Gomes for less than we were talking about here.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...

Cespedes is a big giveaway.
Oakland is going ALL in for 2014...their gamble better pay off.

Exactly where I am. I remember when the Pirates traded for Zane Smith back in '90 with Montreal for Moises Alou and a couple other players, they had control of Smith for 3 more years. To me, those are the types of deals they need to make.
Glad Lester didn't go to the fucking Cardinals or Dodgers. Have to wonder now who the Bucs are targeting? Lackey? Kennedy? I'm not a huge fan of Lackey, plus he's also a FA after this season

It's going to look good if they win it all, bad if they don't, and if Lester goes back to Boston as a FA as has been discussed, ironic at least.

Beane is a fucking magician and proves he is in a class all by himself yet again.
Cespedes is already 29 years old and he is FA after 2015 due to his service time in the Cuban Pro League - also is a free swinger who doesn't fit his template.
Impressive get for Oaktown

But unless Oakland can sign one of the two big pitchers they got this season (Lester is a FA after this year, Smard a FA after next), they have given up a lot to go for it all now.
We shall see what happens.

Wouldn't mind seeing old Ollie Perez in a pirates uniform again
I too would welcome Perez as the Loogy ....
I believe Cespedes is extremely over valued and he doesn't fit the Beane template at all.
Vogt and Fuld on the other hand are ideal for the As proven design.
Other options and an excerpt from the Orioles as they are in the same hunt for the pen :
Among the potential trade possibilities are the Texas Rangers’ Neal Cotts, Boston’s Andrew Miller, the Houston Astros’ Tony Sipp and the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Oliver Perez. Antonio Bastardo of the Philadelphia Phillies also is rumored to be available, but the Orioles don’t appear interested him at this point.
Leading credence to the club’s interest in Cotts, one of the Rangers’ special assignment scouts was in Akron on Wednesday watching the Cleveland Indians’ Double-A affiliate play Double-A Bowie. Pitching for the Baysox was left-hander Tim Berry, who is widely considered a top 10 prospect in the organization.
Cotts, 34, was 2-5 with a 3.52 ERA in 50 appearances through Tuesday this year for the Rangers. Normally effective against right-handers (.237 career average against) and lefties (.247), he has struggled against lefties this season (.277 average; .290 since June 1).
