...the Pirates being the "best team in baseball".
When you did it at the beginning of the season, the Pirates stumbled out of the gate.
Now that you've done it at the beginning of the second half, the Pirates are on their way to stumbling out of the second half gate to a 1-5 start.
This is why such monikers are stupid and useless- there are no trophies for it, and the season is long.

Here is some friendly advice I'd like to offer everyone going forward, INCLUDING ME.
1. Understand that you have ZERO impact on any team's success or failure unless you actually play, coach, manage, operate in the FO, or own the team. It's ok for you to wash your drawers again because stank drawers don't = wins anymore than fresh drawers = losses.
2. Understand that the Pirates, as presently constructed, have significant limitations. You are seeing those limitations manifested in the form of impotent hitting. Sometimes the team gets men on base but can't produce timely hitting. In almost every contest the team suffers from physical or mental errors, including but not limited to poor base running, throwing to the wrong base, subscribing to managing by the book to excess, etc. Frankly, Cole showed considerable restraint last night after he was betrayed by the hitters who stole paychecks last night.
3. Understand that Bob Nutting is who we thought he was. Don't blame NH for making no significant off season or trade deadline moves because NH operates with consistently with the 25th or so payroll while the Cardinals operate with consistently the 11th or so payroll.
4. Understand that at some time our farm system absolutely needs to start producing McCutcheon's and Cole's with greater frequency than it is producing Lambo's and "fill in the blank". Otherwise, we be screwed while the Cardinals keep being the Cardinals and the Cubs start throwing money at free agents with greater frequency.
5. Understand that "injuries" is an excuse more than an explanation for the current situation. I might buy Harrison's loss as significant, but not Jordy (.250) Mercer. Please remember that while the Pirates have lost these guys the Cardinals have lost Wainwright, Adams, and several others for significant time during the year (or this thing might really have gotten ugly).
In summation, try to find something more productive to do with you lives than picking fights with others because their opinions differ from yours. Try to remember that Steeler football and Penguin hockey are right around the corner, and whatever your grievances will be with the Steelers and Penguins at least they spend money trying to win championships, unlike your ROULETTE PITTSBURGH PIRATES.

great post. sadly u hit nail on head! sick of cheap bastard owner
I think NH has done a great job with limited resources as a small market GM. People who do not believe the large market GM doesn't have an advantage in this fucked up league are crazy.
But, I don't know if their drafting philosophy has been great. They have concentrated on drafting mostly pitching and I think G Cole is the only guy who is paying any dividends while the Cubs seem to have several young hitters who are already on their team. Pitching seems to be working for the Mets, but has been mostly a bust for the Pirates. They have had some bad luck for certain.

I think enough teams have proven the big market/small market argument doesn't hold water any more. Plenty of successful small market teams and plenty of shitty big market teams. It's how smart you are that usually wins the day.

Love this post. Especially #3 & #4.

Love this post. Especially #3 & #4.
I also love it. Especially #3. That says it all. Also #4, where are all these prospects? We should have guys ready more rapidly. STL does that shit all the time.
JHay IS a significant loss. More than just his play on the field, which would be enough of a loss. But his leadership and intensity is missed as well. He is the heart of this team, IMO. We made a great move today by the way.
I care more about the Buccos at this juncture than either of those other two teams (not that I don't care about them, just that the Buccos have my heart right now as they often have in the my lifetime). But the point about what we say here having any impact on the games as played, is spot on.
Every team has limitations. To one degree or another. Even if they don't seem to on paper, they do in reality. The key is to make the most of what you have and see if you can compensate for them enough to win more ball games than the other guys.
Great post. Good to hear from you, Bling.
Bling, I know we have no effect on the team.
Of course I was just venting.
I think we still have the team to compete...even with the holes.
We just came out terribly flat...and stupid...this week.
And the manager didn't help...Pro's Vigorish article on Hurdle's awful week should be read by everybody.

You didn't get my point. My point is that large market teams have an advantage. Plain and simple. They have more money which means more resources which means they can make more mistakes than a small market team. They also have the ability to sustain winning longer. Compared to the NFL which has a hard cap where all teams are on more equal footing despite large or small markets.
I agree with you that small market teams have been much more successful recently but they have to work much harder to achieve this than the large market teams.

Agreed on nearly all fronts.
For better or worse, the ungodly pitching performances (Burnett, Liriano, and Morton to start the season) were unexpected and put this team in a better spot than their makeup probably suggests.

Jeemie -- it's the ebb and flow of the baseball season -- rough patches are part of the long long season
NH made a great move today -- all part of the 2nd half plan -- hopefully we'll be saying goodbye to K/Edro very soon too
I know it's the ebb and flow of the season, steel. That's MY line to you whenever you bring up this stuff about how we're the "best team in baseball" in April...or May...or July.

But we are the best team in baseball
what does my saying so have anything to do with how they play this week or next week?
