Mike Tomlin
Needs some credit.
Won't happen on this board but it's true.
After 1-4 and losing Ben and Tuitt, I for one on Thursday will be giving thanks to someone that we still have a season at this point of the year. Maybe that someone is Coach Cool Shades.

Some have suggested he should win Coach of the Year if he gets us to 8-8

I think he deserves a lot of credit for keeping this team together. I am not sure what the criteria is for Coach of the Year but if he can get this team to the playoffs he should be considered.

So he doesn't get any credit for what he has done up to this point?BethlehemSteel wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 7:05 pmLet's hold off popping any corks...Way, way to early.
We have to wait for something bad to happen and then the masses will come out saying "See, he sucks". You think there will be any holding off of criticism at that point?

I don't follow all the other teams but is there another coach that has done more with less this year? Assuming that is a factor for coach of the year consideration.

Lots of starting QB's go down in this league. Some coaches survive, others don't.

My take on how this goes?
I imagine all the other teams’ fans saying “fucking Steelers; how are they still in this? They should be 2-14 because I have seen my team or team X go through similar adversity. I guess they really are like the Yankees!”
The coaching staff is earning their money. And I think they are enjoying this season. It might even pay dividends next season too!
I have no idea what will happen from week to week, but every Sunday, somehow, I have hope.
Steelers have turned adversity into opportunity and fun.
Except Mason....he probably needed to party a bit more this season. His arse would have been a fine coal to diamond converter, but it made a shitty Steeler QB!

I think most of Tomlin's success in the past seasons have come with very talented players on the team. This year he is doing it with players from no where or unheard of players. Tomlin is willing to make player changes that I have not seen in the past. He is taking more chances than in the past. I think he is improving.Donnie Brasco wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 8:36 pmWhat exactly has been miraculous?Texas Black & Gold wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 7:51 pmI don't follow all the other teams but is there another coach that has done more with less this year? Isn’t it funny how 10 days and a 6 point win over the worst team in the league changes everyone’s perspective? The NFL really is a “what have you done for me lately” world...

Ummm his entire defense is stacked full of former first rounders.
He’s winning on the back of all that draft capital.
The offense he and Sphincter are presiding over is historically bad. Yes I get Ben is hurt. But as others have said shit happens.
The Eagles beat the team that more often than not blows us off the field. And did so in the SB with their back-up QB.
So yes, props to Tomlin for keeping highly paid professionals focused on the task at hand.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves by heaping praise all because his defense with first rounders at virtually every position was able to secure victories against the likes of the 0-11 Bungles, the 4-7 Chargers, or the 2-9 Phins.
Coach of the year for 2 wins against teams with a winning record?
Let’s get the team into the postseason and maybe even win a game there (something he’s only been able to do 3 times this past decade with Ben) before we start hurling awards at the man.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.

I couldn't name 3 players off the top of my head that played last year on this offense. And for special teams only the kickers.
But yes the defense is strong and I do recognize more of those players.
It could be that age is catching up to me but I am not the only one having a hard time figuring out who these players are regardless of where they come from.
Tomlin is doing a great job keeping this team together.

How bout all 5 of the starting offensive lineman?I couldn't name 3 players off the top of my head that played last year on this offense. And for special teams only the kickers.
James Connor and Jaylen Samuels at RB?
Vance McDonald @ TE?
JuJu and Washington @ WR?
That’s 9 off the top of my head.

This season is all about the trade for Minkah.
If we had not made that trade, this team would be unwatchable.
We have 4 wins over dregs.
This offense is dismal but maybe we can get something going with Hodges at QB.

Said another way than what the OP is suggesting,
Tomlin has not been a fucking awful shit coach this year!
Hazaah to Mike Tomlin!
Belichick would be undefeated!
All the other NFL coaches would have this team with only 2 losses.
Hazzah to Mikey for 5 losses!
Sarcafont off!

100% truth. Without Minka this team is one of the worst teams in the league instead of in the playoff hunt.
(Something Sean Payton's only been able to do 4 times in the past decade with Brees).

I could only remember a few; Decastro (bc he injured his own player a few seasons ago
Washington I will remember now bc of the 79 yarder.
The point is still valid that Tomlin is doing a good job shuffling players in and out of the lineup to keep this team competitive.

My kindest words re: Mike Tomlin over the past several years has been that he holds his team together, I've said that he was a leader of men, etc. I'm not so sure of that. My primary issue has been that the guy's a game-day dumbfuck. So....he's not as much a gameday fuckup this year.
That said, others are in the same boat. Example #1 would be Jason Garrett yesterday, having score 6 points on the day, down 7 points, 4th & 7 on the 10 yard line and kicks a field goal. Which left hm still needing a touchdown late in the 4Q.
One last thing....Coach, pleeeeeeaaaaase....do NOT start Mason Rudolph next week.

Best move he's made it getting Fitz, which I thought was dumb at the time. 2 wins against the Bengals. Two wins against teams with winning records and combined records of the teams they have beat is 18 and 36. Yeah this team isn't bottom 5 like we thought but it still is a bad team in a league that has a lot of them and no elite ones. The defense seems to finally have a pulse but I'd like to see them beat a team with a good offense before I'll be convinced they've turned a corner for good. I'd still love to see Tomlin help us replenish a pick or two by moving on to Washington.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
And?
Are we reducing this to evaluation in a total vacuum? Only X vs. Y?
I dont follow the weekly goings on of the Saints, their roster, competition, injuries throughout the year, their record when injuries hit, losses they might have sustained vs woefully inferior opponents, etc etc etc.
But we all do that for the Steelers and we all know damn well given the teams we’ve had and some of the weak competition the AFC has presented we should have had more playoff success than we’ve had.
Example one: we allow a guy pretending to be a QB to have a career day against us in the playoffs. The following week a coach that knows a thing or two about game-planning an opponent reduces said QB to the pretender that he was. Within a year tje QB is out of the league for good.
I don’t know how many times Sean Payton has been in that scenario. But I do know we were and came up short.
Running a fucking zero coverage in modified OT. Gotta smash the run at all cost...
I’m betting you don’t even know what I’m referring to

I think I have made peace with myself over some of the decisions Tomlin has made. I am a happier person supporting him then I am complaining about him all the time. But there are two things that I never understood or got a logical explanation about'
1. Why did he wait so long to insert a healthy Ben into a winnable game? (I think last season or year before) What was that all about???
2. Why sign Harrison and not play him the whole season and then turn around and let the Cheaters get him in the playoffs? Was that him holding a grudge or an attempt of disciplining?
I'm sure this board was lit up about those too but I didn't access back then to read it.

Agree 100%. We can come up with lots of examples of a game plan or strategy by our opponent that made us look foolish. How many examples can find when we did that to an opponent? Usually we're scratching our heads at decisions or wondering why we're doing more of the same that hasn't worked in the past. We do what we do...955876 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2019 1:51 amAnd?

I dunno. Maybe because you tossed out the Payton reference devoid of any details. Very elementary. There is nuance to what happens week to week and coach to coach.
Mostly just busting your chops with the last comment. I don’t know what you know.
What I do know is when it comes to THIS team and THIS coach we’ve left a shit ton of meat on the bone. Sat down at the table with an appetite for the most petite of baby-backs and got served full on beef ribs. None of which were finished.
I won’t pretend to know the nuance of every week to week and season to season details as to why Payton has but 4 playoff wins over the past decade.
It is one more than Jibba has delivered though.
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.
Not even his biggest gaff of the day IMO.1. Why did he wait so long to insert a healthy Ben into a winnable game? (I think last season or year before) What was that all about???
His biggest fuck-up was standing on the sidelines staring at the game clock and not calling a TO after the Raiders completed a long pass down to the 7 yard line. Off top of my head I think they were just inside 2 minutes.
Raiders were 1st & goal and had their own TO in pocket which they (smartly) did not use. They either score and take the lead or lose it there. Even without a TO they had an eternity from that down & distance.
And there was Jibba. Standing there with his fucking head up his ass (again) watching the time tick away. Obvious to anyone that his best chance at that point was to preserve as much time as possible in the event the Raiders score.
They did. And we got the ball back with like 20 seconds when we could have had over a minute.
We flew home with the loss and a TO in pocket.
Ole Jibbs might be keeping this team focused this year on our way to a meaningless 8-8 season but he sure as shit can’t figure out the damn game clock.
Win that (very winnable) game and we make the playoffs.
That’s why I don’t compare vs Payton etc. because I dont know the weekly nuance of how and why they win/lose.
I know with 100% certainty that Raiders loss was squarely on Jibba
Jibba Jabber’s offense hasn’t scored more than 7 1st quarter points in 84 consecutive games. An NFL record by far. A historic amount of “easin in”. We are lucky to have him.
