As far as Haley not calling a play, I think in actual fact his playcall was to stfu and have Ben bail us/me out again. Didn't work out, if that's AB instead of Rogers, Ben probably throws the fad to AB for the win, just my opinion.

Imagine if they had had the sense to put Martavis Bryant out on the field on second down.

But why would you want a 6' 4" receiver who's caught the fade before in a playoff game and who had come up huge in the second half on the field for the deciding plays? That's just silly of me!

Haley just did his Thursday interview and apparently threw Ben under the bus. Transcript to follow.

Critical of 2nd down throw inbounds, “can’t throw an INT there. Said he didn’t send Bryant out for 2nd down play, because he wouldn’t have known where to line up or what to do, despite the fact that he team practices this exact situation and 7 plays they use in that situation EVERY FRIDAY.

I am so angry at that motherfucker. I’m going to throw a bag of garbage on him if I run into him here in the south hills.

Only thing I saw was that they weren’t prepared for the Pats to bring six, turning them hot, he would never question Ben thinking DHB could get OOB, and DHB was instructed to drop the pass if he didn’t think he could get OOB (DHB later said he wouldn’t do anything differently than he did).

Oh...and Martavis wasn’t on the field for the second down play because the play they called...he hadn’t practiced. I think that’s utterly ridiculous...call a damn play your best guys have run before. Jesus!

At any rate, it looks like Belichick got the upper hand yet again because he sent six rushers on the second down play for the first time all game, and that disrupted everything. Dude always keeps the opposing teams guessing.

Was more the headline and the"that pass can't be thrown inbounds"

Actually, after reading the whole thing, the non-use of Martavis is the biggest takeaway. Something i realized: not only was Bryant not in there for the 2nd or 3rd down... he wasn't in the game on 1st down and goal!!! He's pictured on the sideline when James scores.

I mean, what in the actual fuck.

What in God's name were you trying to put in the img tags, B2B? :D

Bryant was on the sideline a LOT in the second half.

I want to know from Todd Haley how he decided that one of his best goal line plays would be one that didn’t include Martavis Bryant.

I’m sure the play he called was fabulous if Antonio Brown is in the game, but Antonio WASN’T in the game so ADAPT.

And by “adapt”, I don’t mean “sub in DHB for Brown and never use Bryant”.

He had three and a half minutes to come up with a second down play, and the one he chose didn’t include Martavis?

What was the third down play you were going to call that would have included Martavis, Todd?

Maybe you should have called THAT ONE ON SECOND DOWN!

The take I got on that was that love him or hate him, Bill Belichick is a master coach.

Brilliant move to send the house on second down. He had to know the Steelers were probably not very focused at that point...that they had to be shocked at the replay reversal...so he chose that time to force the issue by making the Steelers go hot.

Wonder what Ben was seeing pre-snap...had he changed the protections to have Bell chip the sixth rusher before he went out into the pattern...that play might have developed better.

The guy who pressured Ben roared right past Bell.

That playcall right there epitomizes the difference between Belichick and Tomlin.

Mike Tomlin was pussyfooting around with Jerald Hawkins and Fitzgerald Touissaint, and left his 6’4” WR on the bench at the critical juncture of the game.

Bill Belichick said “win or lose, I’m going to force them to make a quick decision by being aggressive. I like my chances”.

That’s why Mike Tomlin is Bill Belichick’s bitch.

We discussed this on another OP, Jeems. Had Bell stayed in, to have six blockers on six, Ben would have had more options than just DHB.

If you remember, on the telecast as the Pats were lining up, Romo commented that they were showing blitz and that they (the Pats, I think he meant), needed to "get out of it."

Jeemie, Jeemie, Jeemie.

Head Coaches choose top level strategy, Coordinators execute that strategy.

Belichick might have suggested they blitz, but Matt Patricia dialed up the D. Tomlin might have dictated how he wanted the endgame played, but Todd Haley and Richard Mann chose the personnel. You want to know who really outsmarted whom, it starts at the top: one owner hired guys who can be trusted to execute the strategies of the HC and be subservient to him, the other made a nepotism hire of a guy who doesn't really fit the personnel he's given or doesn't want to make the most of it.

Now, if Martavis isn't out there the next time the Steelers are in this situation... you can blame the HC for not making it clear that it's unacceptable.

As to that 2nd down play call and Bell not chipping-- Bell is my primary receiving option with AB and Bryant on the sideline. I can't believe he was in the backfield at all. Just a shitty play call and wrong personnel. It makes a case for not using the TO after JuJu's catch. If Ben had come to the line, seen the blitz coming, and had a TO... he's calling it there.

We’ve seen this Cowboy and Dead Indian show plenty of times by now. If Mike Tomlin hasn’t made his vision clear to Todd Haley by now...he never will. The buck stops with him.

And no...rushing down the field and saving the timeout would still be stupid...even dumber to say “I’m going to save my timeout and have one less shot for a score because my coaches are stupid”.

The solution is to mother fucking STOP BEING SO STUPID.

And finally, you miss my larger point. Tomlin had a chance to prevent second and goal by continuing to be aggressive earlier in the fourth quarter. As they stepped into the fourth quarter, all Mike had to say was one thing “Todd...do NOT take your foot off the gas”.

Second and goal happened BECAUSE second and 23 happened...is what I’m trying to say.

Stop trying to absolve Tomlin. Just stop it.

We see what we see week in and week out BECAUSE of him.

Ben...stuck with the personnel he has there, couldn't have changed the play at the line? Serious question.

That was my “question” too, even not phrased as such.

Could Bell have not picked up the blitz and then gone out? A simple change like that?

Even if not- I agree whatever play was called doesn’t feel like their best play in that spot, especially if it’s so inflexible it can’t be changed up, but I think we can all agree Ben threw an ill-advised pass to DHB. DHB is fast, but he was inside the numbers, he has to hold up a half second to secure the pass, and Malcolm Butler is one fast mofo himself who has to do no such holding up.

Ben needed to toss that away...period.

We agree on this.

And I think Ben had too much faith in DHB getting out of bounds and also didn't make a 10/10 throw... but I actually thought DHB would get OOB when the ball was thrown, so I guess I understand the thought. In general, I didn't like the play call and personnel on the 2nd down play. The whole game felt so Haley compared to the past few weeks. Ben was doing almost no hard counts or line adjustments the way he has been doing. Could be that they were avoiding hand signals and audibles b/c of Ernie et al?

To me, these were much bigger issues than the playcall or throw on 3rd down.
