Thing is, I need that 5th receiver to be vet depth - he only plays if someone gets injured. Switz is not that guy. 2016 Eli would be trade bait. The Eli we have now is probably the caliber you expect for a vet depth guy. Problem is, inexplicably, Eli's cap hit is $1.5M - that's double what you should be paying a #5 vet receiver. I think they gave him that deal as a solid because injury kept him from being a FA, but then they signed Moncrief and drafted Johnson. Johnson looks ready to play Wk1, so that probably seals Eli's fate.

Is there going to be a vet receiver that's a clear upgrade to Switz after cuts? Probably not, so keep him as insurance for the return job.

Take Holton as gunner and to be your receiver project.

Switzer provides depth at a reasonable price. It would be unfortunate if Switzer were to take any touches from, well anyone, but especially from Johnson or Samuels.

But I think you have to have someone to provide that vet depth. Spence is even tinier, and I don't count the CFL as vet depth.

Also, there is a reason why Eli was undrafted. Zero pedigree, had one okay season, and living off of that sole okay season since. How is god awful. Makes sense KC would support him.

Did you get a free ice cream cone from lil' Switz or do you think he's cute or something?

Gotta give the lil' fella credit though. He's blowing the right people and doing everything possible (you know, except making any plays on the football field) to try and make this squad.

Spencer has shit all over Switz in the return game and Rogers is taking his lunch money getting open down the field.

Switz and his lil' 5 yarder might not make him a lock.

The ice cream might though.

Guys! One catch down field = getting open down the field.

I actually just hate Eli Rogers. He has been garbage for a long time. The game Saturday is a prime example; the whole failure to make a play on the ball from Rudolph (i.e., a mental or lazy mistake) is way more important compared to running a skinny post against some backup scrub.

It is obvious why you are going on this crusade. You love ELi, and thus hate Switz. The only thing that is unclear is why you love Eli. What has he done in 2.5 years to give you any reason to love?

Remember, Eli is an UDFA who had a single okay season, a fumble problem, hasn't been good in two years, and is coming off an injured season. Not much reason to like him.

I don’t like Rogers but he’s not the utter embarrassment Switzer is on the field.

You called Rogers 2016 season “okay” but believe Switzer is better when that “okay” year SHITS ALL OVER what the little fella did last year.

Rogers had more catches, more TD’s and even funnier, Rogers averaged 12.5 yards per catch.

Switzer averaged 7 yards per catch.

If Rogers best season is “okay” what in the fuck would you call what Switzer put up last year?

I’m gonna laugh my ass off if Dobbs has to play this season.

When he personally loses another big game, to watch Tomlin try and justify his own stupidity is going to be a scream!

At least he has some wheels though.

Switz knows offense better and can be serviceable on the short stuff provided there are other players on the field for the D to account for first.

Not a fan of any of them really. Did like the way Spencer ran yesterday though.

Maybe someone gets cut that’s a better option.

In an ideal world, but I don't think you're seeing anyone cut that's a clear upgrade over Switzer or Rogers (as far as a 5th receiver to provide vet depth).

Switzer and Eli, I think, are the only guys currently on the team who have returned more than a few punts in the NFL. Switzer's cap hit is half of what Eli's is. But if you keep Spencer, and maybe hope Johnson grows into it, then Switzer's value as punt returner becomes pretty meaningless.

Would love to see a trade, but who's going to trade for a 4th-5th receiver that will be cut in a few weeks? I guess it happens, and maybe 1 of them will be part of a deal for a #2 TE.

Colbert should be shopping Dobbs, too (LOL, stop Tomlin from cutting Hodges for Dobbs). Feels like an unusual year where we might have a few guys teams are interested in to fill out the bottom of their roster.

Hope they continue to go for those type of deals while Ben is still with us.

I think you should re-watch.

For completing just his second camp, Rudolph acquitted himself pretty nicely playing with and against the #1's

Again, those were first stringers on both sides of the ball when he orchestrated that 14-play, 89-yard scoring drive using 8:06 off the clock.

This really was a solid pick, and he's developing just fine.

Edge, I agree that Mason has talent, but you can’t look at that pick in a vacuum. Since 2013 the Steelers have burnt 3 mid round draft picks on either 1) Ben’s adequate backup or 2) Ben’s heir apparent (not sure which one is which, or what the strategy is behind either approach). It looks to me that Mason may very well be our next starting QB in 3-4 years when Ben hangs it up, but who in the hell knows at this point. Rudolph could develop into starting material and be worthy of trade bait. He could plateau into just a guy, the organization could see him as “non-starter material” and decide to burn more picks on QBs when Ben retires. Who knows.

Why sticks in my craw is Rudolph looking adequate means the Jones and Dobbs picks seem even more boneheaded. Either Ben wasn’t up front with the organization about how many years he had left OR the Steelers were just wingin’ it during those mid-round draft days. Sure as hell would have been nice to pick up some legit defensive starters with those picks.

What sticks out? The Lbers. This maybe the best group PS have had in a very long time. It is early and preseason can be a false dawn but over 2 games?

UGIII needs a chance with the starters. He got some v KC bc I think Williams went out early not sure why. UGIII looked completely at home and made plays around the ball.

Bush has rawness that needs work but the athleticism & explosiveness is obvious. Plus unlike Shaz he has a better feel in run game (doesn't try to run around OTs).

Watt: looks even better than last season. He was giving KC fits. Even on a screen Watt beat the OT so fast he almost got to the QB.

Dupree had a nice night but to be fair one of those sacks came against a 2nd stringer. I'll hold off on thinking he has turned the corner.

Chick is a JAG the end.

Skipper is so similar to Carlos Emmons it is eerie. Emmons was a 7th rounder who was an excellent STer and a decent spot starter (not as good as full time).

Ola: hopefully knee scope works out ok. He isn't Deebo but he can play and is light years better than Chick.

Barron: is ok and showed up decent in coverage v KC.

Overall a really fun group to assess and hopefully the potential being flashed = production when it counts.

On Burns? He was ok not great. He got beat deep once and for me that is all I needed to see. He was fortunate Mahomes made a poor throw. Also Nelson got beat a bunch. That was even more worrying.

Perhaps you can't look at the pick in a vacuum, but:
1> we shouldn't let the draft misses of Landry Jones and Josh Dobbs sully what we got with Rudolph.
2> It's still early to know for sure with Rudolph, but I'm liking what I see in how his progress is tracking.
Fortunately, this is still all Ben's show for the foreseeable future, and Mason can continue to learn and grow behind a clipboard.
...but he did look poised to step up if needed - way more than Dobbs at the very least...

and
3> go back and look at those drafts... looks like they tried to "pick up some legit defensive starters" with the higher-round picks before these were made.

Seems to me these are the draft misses we should be more concerned about...

My thoughts from seeing the game on the rail row A - 46yrd line seats.

Spencer is the punt returner. Fun to watch.

Snell seems like a great pick.

RB Trey Edmunds sucks.

Speaking of suck, Brian Allen looked like shit.

Dirty Red in coverage sucks as well but he does have a no quit motor.

The garbage OPI call and the new BS challenges are just another part of change that will infuriate me moving forward. They have video and still cant get that shit right.

The main problem with PI calls is, on replay, they're trying to legislate what pass interference is and is not. On a PI review, they need to watch the play full speed from a few angles and then make a judgement call if there was actual material interference.

The problem is PI as called on the field is a judgement call in real time. There's almost always contact with both, so I see few replays overturning calls. And that's a big problem if they throw the flag more liberally because of review.

Fiitipaldi said in his chat he doesn't think they'll carry a guy just as a returner. I don't understand that - you can't find one roster spot and one hat for a guy who has a real shot at impacting the game?

If you can dress DHB to be a gunner, then you can dress Spencer to be your returner and find someone else on defense to be gunner (I would hope).

Ya this...

Tomlin has a long history or rolling duds out there to catch punts and return kicks however.

Crappy Davis comes to mind...

I don't see why we need to have a VETERAN receiver at the depth position.

Just take the best six based on whatever metrics you want to use.

And I also agree if Spencer can return punts, even if he can't catch passes for whatever reason, if he can make an impact returning punts he's not useless.

Better to keep someone who's really good at one thing than take guys, and make them do two things, neither of which they migth suck at, but also neither of which they are any good at.

I’m sure they will take the six best...it just won’t be the six that the SteelerFury “experts” want.

Well, Johnson is a rookie and we don't really know what we have from Moncrief.

Reportedly Eli has been taking practice reps with the first team. He's probably the 5th best receiver on the team, but he might actually be playing until Johnson masters the playbook and earns his reps. Yeah, he's been impressive but he's still a rookie, and we've historically not seen much from any of them until the second half of the year.

The reason for vet depth at the position is you have JuJu, Moncrief and Washington....and then a rookie....and then presumably Holton who has caught 11 total passes in the NFL. So, yeah, if there's an injury you need someone with command of the playbook to step in.

Either Eli or Switzer has to make the team, because they add some insurance. Axing them to create a roster spot for a guy who will be out of the league in a few years seems like a stupid risk to take.

I'm sure we'll see plenty of Jaylen Samuels running routes too.

Very, very excited to see this offense develop.

Eli was awful and should be cut today. That “play” in the EZ turned a likely TD into an almost interception because Eli was lazy or stupid. Inexcusable. We all should root for him to be cut because he is garbage

I was in this boat until I figured Eli is used to a Ben fast ball than Rudolph fast ball. I will chalk that one up to if Ben is throwing there the ball gets there faster and he does not have to come back. Either way it is a good teaching moment for the WR room in general.

Sure, Rogers should have fought back to that ball harder.

Zero doubt about it.

Besides that one fuck up, Rogers has looked good so far this camp.
