OT: Ohio/Central/Western PA microbrewery recommendations

Post by StillMadAtSlobber » Thu Jan 23, 2020 4:35 pm

We don't have a General forum anymore so I am posting this here

Next week me and a friend from Downingtown (west of Philly) will be driving to north of Cleveland to hangout with a college buddy for the Superbowl.

If you could hit a couple micro breweries on the way or back, what would you choose? For what beers in particular?

Previously we have hit up Fatheads and Burning River in the Cleveland area.

Any place within an hour of Downingtown or Philly we know.

We have also stopped at Strouds and Troegs before. I am hoping Nugget Nectar will be out when I am up there.

I haven't hit up Church in the burg, I think they are still open. That would also allow a Primantis stop in Oakland.

If I'm going to recommend anything in the Cleveland area, it will be Ohio City. Great Lakes Brewing is the main restaurant/brewery and it is excellent.

Market Garden, Hansa, and Forest City are all within 2 blocks of Great Lakes. Disclaimer: They're all fairly new and I don't have much experience with any of them.

Platform brewing is about one mile away, and is quite good as well.

Edit: apparently there are 3 other breweries in Ohio City that I hadn't even heard of (Bookhouse, Saucy Brew Works, Bad Tom Smith) within the same neighborhood.

I was looking at your likely driving route. have you been here http://bubesbrewery.com/ Mt Joy, PA not too far off the turnpike. Very unique place.

Also, Chambersburg PA has two good little breweries http://www.roypitz.com/ they have a location in Philly also. So you may be familiar

the other is called Gearhouse. https://gearhousebrewingco.com/

both places also have excellent food. Especially Gearhouse. Try the steamed buns.

There are so many breweries I don't know where to start. I'll start anyway...

1). East End (Larimer): Excellent beers, perhaps the most famous is "Big Hop". They now have food onsite.

2). Brew Gentleman (Braddock): Award winning beers

3). Voodoo Brewery (Homestead)

4). Helltown Brewery (Export PA, worth a detour just to see Export)

Dancing Gnome is amazing in Gibsonia.

Strange Roots, formerly Drai Laag is wonderful.

Agree on Voodoo and Brew Gentlemen.

There's so many good ones now, though. The Pittsburgh scene is exploding.

Listermann's in Cincinnati is spectacular.

I saw nugget nectar at the store this weekend so it must be on tap in Hershey

Federal Taphouse in Lancaster has over 100 craft beers on tap. You and your companion can get your hipster craft beer on over 100 different ways  8-)

If you're in Lancaster, there's a Voodoo location, Columbia Kettle Works 2nd Gear, Funk Brewing in E-town, South County Brewing in nearby York County.

If you want to do the taproom thing, Hunger N Thirst has a beer selection and food menu that blows the pretty crappy, kind of Guy Fieri looking Federal Taphouse out of the water on every level. They have a great bottle shop and gourmet deli attached to the restaurant space, as well.

Speaking of Western PA booze, any suggestions on a good local rye?

I did try a PA rye called Dad's Hat which was not very good.

Fan of Sazerac, Whistlepig (obviously), Pikeville as a general guide.

Gotta be a good one somewhere, after all Monongahela is Whiskey Rebellion country.

For Rye, you can try Wigle Whiskey:

Sadly, BevMo does not carry Wigle, but does carry Dad's Hat, which is not very good.

We skipped the burg, since we driving through at 1:30 and Dancing Gnome wasn't open.

We got up Platform and on recommendation we hit up Nano. Great food there.

I got 4 4 packs or 6 packs from platform

We briefly hit Troegs on the way back. First time seeing Hershey, Google Maps took us exit Turnpike from West Harrisburg (83) instead of past and back. Had A Nugget, not as good as I remember. Picked up merchandise, a 6 of Nugget and a crowler of the Java Stout.

We'll hit Tired Hands Fermentarium before heading to the airport.

I'll be checking 2 bags with as much beer as I can.
