And Then There Were 2. Eli Retires; Ben and Rivers Remain
Eli retired. Some of the trends put the end in perspective...could very well have been Ben’s last season, a very short season coming up, or 5 more glorious years.

The first chip has fallen from the 2004 quarterback draft class.
Eli Manning announced his retirement Wednesday after 16 seasons, making him the first of the three star quarterbacks from that 2004 class to call it quits in the NFL.
Manning, 39, was the first-overall pick in that draft by the Chargers, who quickly traded him to the Giants in exchange for Phillip Rivers, the fourth selection, and additional picks.
The Steelers selected Ben Roethlisberger 11th in that draft.
None of the three made much of an impact on the 2019 season.
Manning started the first two games of the season for the Giants before being benched in favor or rookie Daniel Jones, the Giants' first-round draft pick. He appeared in two games later in the season when Jones was injured, finishing with a passer rating of 82.6 with six touchdown passes and five interceptions.
Rivers and Roethlisberger wish the season had gone so well for them.
Roethlisberger played just six quarters before leaving the field in Week 2 with an elbow injury that required season-ending surgery. The Steelers are hopeful the soon-to-be 38-year-old quarterback will make a full recovery for 2020.
Rivers, meanwhile, struggled through a tough 2019 season, throwing 20 interceptions, the third time in his career he's had 20 or more interceptions and second time in the past four seasons.
A free agent, Rivers recently moved his family from San Diego to Florida. There is a good chance he will play for someone other than the Chargers in 2020. He turned 38 in December.
All three rank among the top 10 in many of the NFL's career passing statistics.
Manning leaves the game seventh on the NFL's all-time passing yardage list with 57,023 yards. Rivers is sixth on that list and Roethlisberger eighth. He also ranks seventh in passing touchdowns with 366, three more than Roethlisberger, who is ninth on the list. Rivers ranks sixth in that statistic with 397.
Manning also won two Super Bowls with the Giants, defeating the Patriots on both occasions. He and Roethlisberger are among just 12 quarterbacks in league history to have won the Super Bowl twice.
Rivers has never made it to the Super Bowl.
But since leading the Giants to a Super Bowl win at the end of the 2011 season, Manning had posted a record of just 48-67 with 181 touchdown passes and 115 interceptions in 115 games.
For his career, Manning led the Giants to a record of 117-117, winning his final start in Week 15 this season to even his record.
Matt Schaub, a backup for the Falcons, was a third-round pick in that draft.

No love for JP Losman?

Time flies. The older I get the faster it goes. I remember when Ben was drafted thinking Miami of Ohio, what the fuck. Glad I was wrong.

We might be wishing for a Ben retirement before it’s all said and done.
Hope I’m wrong on this completely.
I just see immobile, injury prone, and lots of INTs in his future.
Again, hope like hell I’m wrong.
I just dont see this Ben being better than years past Ben given the lack of top tier coaching this team is currently saddled with.
If the team was all in for an oline rebuild along with better offensive coordination and skill positions I could see Ben finishing with a bang.
If we continue to get the lazy, uninspired crap we’ve been getting With the hope Ben “bails then out” I don’t see that ending well.
Ben could win the Super Bowl this year, next year, and the year after if he played for the 49ers.
Under Jibbs I’m guessing 1 maaaaaybe 2 playoff appearances with no SB appearances.

Only three times in NFL history has a QB beaten a 13 win or better team three times in one playoff run.
Eli 2011
Eli 2007
Ben 2005
Obscure stat I know but still pretty cool.

What about Jeff “Pole” Smoker?

Eli beat hoodie twice when it mattered most....and destroyed their perfect season.
Iconic status in my book.
Thank u Eli!

So true. Very thankful for Eli.
Wouldn’t want those SBs added to the tally.

And if Deputy Dawg Carroll and his flunky Quinn hadn’t both gone brain dead in their respective Super Bowl appearance...
“Ah, who cares about Seattle’s Space Needle? Dumb looking building, you can see the whole stupid town, built by some jagoff! Pittsburgh got Mt. Warshington, gorgeous hillside, beautiful views of the whole city, built by God…we win!” - Pittsburgh Dad
...and Andy Reid hadn’t displayed his usual time management genius in Super Bowl XXXIX...
“Yeah we suck, be there is a chance we could suck slightly more if we try to correct the problem.” - Art Deuce (summarized by SteelPerch)
And if the Falcons hadn’t blown the biggest 4th quarter lead in history.
So many times the Pats came out on top when they could have/should have lost.
I eventually gave up on being upset by them and have just assumed they’ll finish with a bazillion SBs...

I will always be thankful for Eli and his role in keeping the Cheats from getting to 7. By all accounts he’s a good guy. Funny how he is one of the three best quarterbacks of his draft class, but he’s only the third best in the boat, when he goes fishing with his dad and bother. Also, Payton is a lot funnier. But Eli beat the Cheats in two games that really counted.

So I was hearing about this on the radio (ESPN) this AM. They were saying it isn't really Florida team specific, but he has family in FL so that is why he relocated.A free agent, Rivers recently moved his family from San Diego to Florida. There is a good chance he will play for someone other than the Chargers in 2020. He turned 38 in December.
There was also a bunch of Eli talk and the HoF.
Reasons: 2 rings. 2 all time great plays in a SB. 2 time SB winning MVP.
Adam ferretface Shefter had an interesting take. If you can't tell the tale of football (a/k/a the SB) without spending time on them, they should be in the HoF.

It is hard for me to be optimistic even with Ben when a waterhead like Tomlin is our head coach. I said five years ago we would never win another ring with Tomlin at the controls. At a time where offenses are evolving, I just don't see us getting there with a combo of Ben and Tomlin.

Just came on to type this. He's a first ballot HOFer in my book just based on this.

Don't forget the SB against Carolina when the Panthers tied up the game late. Then Kasay kicked the KO out of bounds and gave the Pats the ball at their own 40 with a minute left in regulation. Of course Brady came through but it might have been a different story if Kasay doesn't fuck up big time at that crucial juncture.

Heard Charlie Daniels' song on XM yesterday, line about Pittsburgh Steelers brought me back to our championship roots, when we were feared, when opposing fan bases wrote an L into their calendars when the schedule was released.
Removing emotion, and right now under Tomlin IMO we are more emotion than pragmatic; we need a blood transfusion and change of direction.
Ben is approaching 40, coming off surgery, overweight and he's expensive. Invoke the Emperor's philosophy, life's work: Termination Agreement. Drafting a QB is high priority, but first retain Colbert, replace Tomlin and his entire staff save one or two assistants. Shake up/rebuild O; add talent on D around five existing vital pieces.
Concede nothing to Browns Bengals Ravens although all three are adding talent, making moves.
Steeler football now under Tomlin is neither satisfying or rewarding. Elements of Steeler football is evidenced in SF, TN.
Unfortunately none of this pipe dream comes true.

If JaVon and DuPree stay Id bet the Steelers have the best D in the NFL next year. Even if JaVon leaves its a pretty good draft for NTs
The offense needs a blue chip OL and 1 or 2 pieces at the skill positions
I expect this team to compete for a Lombardi next year
