How do you even have an NFL 2021 draft? With no season played, the positioning, the draft slots do you go by the last played season record?

So, the first pick in the 2021 Steelers draft, Pittsburgh selects, with the 18th pick, ____________________?

That is a list of cities by population density. The first US city is Los Angeles at #90. You will see in the top 10, some cities doing poorly( Mumbai) and some doing very well(Taipei and Seoul/Incheon). While I do agree that population density has a lot to do with the spread, the selfishness and lack of foresight of some people is astounding.

I’d be curious to see the immigration #s to those places vs here.

You can PM them to me if you feel like looking them up.

I don’t.

Anyways, back to topic. I’m not feeling this season even happening.

My firm just extended our work from home and even floated it could be into next year.

Maybe the NFL pulls it off. Might not be worth it in the end depending on how it shakes out.

Season would blow if it’s nothing but a round table of which block of players are all out this week due to COVID.

Maybe things turn.

I remember the 1987 NFL season with the 3 strike games.

When I picture this 2020 NFL season where players/starters may get Covid and have to be held out, it doesn't necessarily have to be as bad as it was in 1987.

Back then when the players went on strike, the NFL teams for the most part were signing a lot of former CFL and USFL players to play those 3 games. One of the guys that I loved to watch in those USFL games was QB Reggie Collier. His career never really took off like some thought, he had issues with drug use and criticism of not putting in the work to develop as a passer, but man, he was like a Lamar Jackson of his day, just a gifted running QB. He was Steve Bono's backup during those 3 games but did see some playing time.

Anyway, the point, is that if the NFL expanded the amount of players that they can keep, instead of a 53 man roster, say it was made 60, and then say you have a 10 man practice squad, say you have 70 players in all. If those players are all going through training camp, preseason, however that may end up being, then that is a whole lot better than it was in 1987.

Back in 87 they were literally signing unknowns off the street, with no experience in the system, some with no experience in the NFL even. Today, if 4-5 players come down sick and go into quarantine, at least the natural shuffling of the roster is with players that have been in the system all along. Hopefully the quality of play will not suffer too much, it will be magnitudes better than those games in 1987.

One last thing, wouldn't it be nuts if there is no season, there is some lottery to pick the draft order and the Pittsburgh Steelers have the first overall selection of the 2021 NFL draft??

So, with that first overall pick do the Steelers get their next franchise QB?? Or who would you pick?

On the first point, it's just apples-to-oranges if you lose a stud like Ben or TJ vs. Vince Williams or Edmunds. Although, shit, we could win a couple games with Rudolph or Duck.

If PIT picks #1, I don't know how you don't take Trevor Lawrence. I think he may be more gifted, throwing and running, than even Aaron Rodgers. In your scenario, Ben hasn't played in 2 years and has a huge cap hit....trade him for an R3 - #1 pick is going to average $10M per year.

It gets much more interesting if you're picking, say, #8 and there was no 2020 college football....

If you think that there won't be a plan in place for two mulitbillion-dollar business ventures- you're crazy.

There will be games even if there are no people there. Boxing and wrestling were awkward to watch but then they started pumping in crowd noise and everything is watchable. Before it looked like the start of some weird apartment wrestling porn.

If there are not games-

No one is going to sit back and allow the Bengals two first-round picks in two years. The draft will go into a lottery.
Weighted lottery or just 32 balls and the draft is the order they come out live on television?
I say 32 balls. And for TV drama purposes, the last ball out gets the #1 pick.

It took me like a week to realize you meant for a SteelerFury draft version.

P.S.: if the season is cancelled, I’m thinking we should do a NFL redraft—all the current rostered players and you have to build a roster. Order determined by ping pong balls.

Let’s hope it never comes to that.

How to do a draft with no season is a really tough question. You can't just use the same order again and give CIN the #1 pick again. But I also don't think it's totally fair to give everyone, including KC and other playoff teams, an equal chance at #1.

Not sure how you do that. Maybe cluster it, such that the teams who picked 1-7 last year have an equal shot at #1. Then the remaining 6, plus the 8th, have an equal shot at #2. And teams can only fall so far, so CIN might be guaranteed no worse than 10th. Similarly, KC wouldn't be able to do any better than like 22.

Some luck and some excitement around a drawing, but not entirely detached/independent from 2019.

IV League just canceled their whole fall sports schedule; they will reevaluate the spring schedule at a later date.

That is one step closer to major conferences following suit, which means it is one step closer to pretty severe pressure being placed on the NFL.

When the deaths from the top 5 CV19 states come rolling in over the next month, unless there has been some significant step change in mortality rate, people’s appetite for risk will be altered fairly severely.

I suspect the deaths will probably be the equivalent of filling up 10 NFL stadiums with fans and dropping bombs on each when the dust settles.

I don’t think it has dropped significantly from NY. And any drop will most likely be countered by step change in infections going the wrong way.

The WHO site not great on the iPhone. Worldometers pretty good on the iPhone.

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavir ... eath-rate/

Infection Fatality Rate (23k / 1.7M = 1.4% IFR)
Actual Cases with an outcome as of May 1 = estimated actual recovered (1,671,351) + estimated actual deaths (23,430) = 1,694,781.

Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) = Deaths / Cases = 23,430 / 1,694,781 = 1.4% (1.4% of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 have a fatal outcome, while 98.6% recover).

I buy the 1.4% number for now. It will probably go down some more when they employ NY learnings to Texas and Florida and the like. It was adjusted for NY antibody testing and the deaths count was adjusted upwards....both numerator and denominator adjusted upwards scientifically.

If we hold at 50k new infections for the next month, that will be 20,000 deaths. If we get up to 100,000 infections per day that will obviously be 40k deaths, but the question remains does infection rate spiral out of control at that point?

1.4% fatality rate applied to the infection rate over a month doesn’t sound as awful looking at current trends, not to be confused with the mortality rate!

Maybe only 1 stadium full of people if we get our shit together as a country.

Please please please just don’t cancel the NFL. Could give two shits about college football.

Of course I do all the math above and then I read the US surpassed 3,000,000 infections.

3,000,000 x 1.4% = 42,000

US death toll = 134,854

PUUUUNTTTT TEAM!

Actually the death rate has declined significantly but that won't stop the fear mongers.
Fear mongers? Fear mongers????? JFC.
Well yes. It certainly seems that way to me. Constantly focusing on the negative. Rarely if ever mentioning any good news. I also hear in the tone of reporters voice. To me they really are trying to scare people.
Secure NHALS early and then go deep into the PLAYOFFS. :D :D :D

Connecticut Senator putting pressure on other conferences to cancel:

USA Today:

In the wake of the Ivy League announcing Wednesday that fall sports will not be held during the upcoming semester because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., called on other college sports conferences to do the same.

Football is in severe jeopardy!

Lot of major college programs suspending voluntary workouts.
Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...
