Offensive coordinator for BBen in his prime?
Re: Offensive coordinator for BBen in his prime?
Since you only mentioned one name my question would be...why do we always recycle names?
I don't want an old mind. I want a fresh mind.

Then the Heath Miller shouldn't be considered because all his plays would be to the safety valve but only once in a while. I think all the fans would agree.

I started the thread to refer emerging talent who would match BB. I do like Shanahan - he is an offensive genius in my mind. Yet - he struggled on the D side of the ball as a coach.
All your suggestions were amazing Jeemie. You've added a lot to the thread thus far.
But the game is changing. A genius OC from the last 20 years may not be relevant today.
I am contributing...by refusing to accept the parameters you laid down and suggesting new parameters. What is the purpose of looking back at a Ben's past?
Who are the up and coming offensive minds today? Personally, I think that's a more interesting question.

So on the other side of the ball - Good-bye to to Butler, Mitchell and Lebeau too Jeemie?
Have any of them proved they can adapt to the new NFL?
If not, then yes...they should go.

Yes Heath's game was always about speed just like all tight ends.
Bring back speedy Paulson
Haley and Arians may not have have been top-tier, but I don't think it matters much. None of the "geniuses" anyone is going to pick would have been a genius OC with PIT because neither Tomlin nor Cowher would have given them free reign.
And any OC you want to pick would have struggled with what they've had to work with on OL. People have forgotten how we all bitched about Arians slow developing shit getting Ben hit and sacked a ton.
You can't have an elite offense without the PA pass - and our OL hasn't been good enough to run it such that Ben has gone from off-the-charts good running it 2nd most in the league his first two years to running it less than almost every team in the league now.

Anyone who has shown themselves to be a fresh, innovative playcalling mind will be in line for an HC job.
Hiring a coordinator your options are either recycling someone who was let go as an OC or HC somewhere or the complete crapshoot that is hiring an offensive assistant from somewhere with 0 track record.
Could maybe go after a college level coordinator as a third option. Generally at the college level coordinators aren't being given much freedom to innovate tho.

I think we have similar talent types to Seattle at WR, RB, DL-- they don't have an AB, Lynch probably a bit better than Bell, their depth is better than ours... but, generally, they have similar group. One could even say, on some level, that what Haley is trying to do is similar-- run the ball and get the ball in hands of playmakers.
That said, their approach is much, much more well-designed and their execution is so much better. It appears simpler, and yet very hard to stop. They use the threat of Harvin jet sweep and a potential handoff on most passing plays-- freezes the LBs and gets Harvin a free release... slows the DL pass rush. They also threaten the seams in way we do not at all, except in desperation time-- this despite no huge athletic types, just like us.
I think Darrell Bevell has done a fantastic job there in an incredibly short time-- playoffs twice, then won a Super Bowl (putting up 35+ points) in his third season as OC. Now has made them kind of a juggernaut offensively. I didn't necessarily think of him as an OC superstar in Minnesota but he looks like it now.

Grass is greener syndrome. Seattle averaged 1.5 more yards per game than the steelers last year.
When we move to a new offensive coordinator I'd look at Pac12 coordinators. Scott Frost (Oregon) or Mike Norvell (ASU). My guess though is that both of those guys will be college head coaches within the next year or 2.

Looking back, I'm fine with Whiz and Arians. Not perfect by any means, but Ben had a lot of success.
Moving forward, I'm okay with Haley. Ben's had some very productive years under Haley and has progressively gotten better. I think the problem has been that Haley's time coincides with a weak roster, roster turnover and poor W/L results.
I think because of those inevitabilities, perception, etc. He gets hammered more than he should.
But I'm okay with him moving forward.
Honestly, I'm more concerned with Tomlin/Colberts ability to pick talent and rebuild a roster than either of the coordinators.

Bradshaw called his own plays, let's get him a headset...

I'd be good with Ben calling his own plays also.
How about The late(s) Ernie Zampese/Don Coryell, they would have had Ben doing what Ben does best, push the ball downfield with the intermediate and deep ball.

who cares about yards per play? I don't, especially when you're grinding clock in the 2nd half of nearly every game.
Anyway you slice it, they were more effective at playing winning football on offense and they performed well in the postseason.

Ben's a gunslinger, not a mailman.
