According to Mike Stone of 97.1 The Ticket, the Lions have made an offer to longtime Steelers GM Kevin Colbert -- and Colbert is 'close' to accepting. It's now on Steelers ownership to make a counteroffer to prevent Colbert from leaving.

I'd be ok with losing Colbert if it meant his replacement would fire Tomlin and his entire staff.
Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”

Or...they don’t replace him, and promote Cool Shades to the HC/GM dual role...

Hopefully it happens.......

More than ANYTHING else the Steelers need alot of new blood that doesnt feel obligated to other employees in the building

Truthfully Id like to see a new GM HC and at least 1 coordinator that arent connected to each other in any way

Hopefully they are all winners and work together great......but if not.....let power consolidate around whoever earns it

Franchises fall, I could see this happening to the Steelers organization. I hope it doesn't.

Colbert was a part of the machine that brought us 2 more Lombardis.

Losing him would be a huge risk.

Most certainly promoted from within. The standard is the standard.

I think they hit rock bottom in 2-3 years.
They just want from 11-0 to one of the worst teams in the league in a matter of 6 weeks. Total train wreck, and the conductor is a babbling fool.

Colbert back to his Detroit roots?

But why?

Could be that he's getting the old Art2 nudge out the door.

Maybe he's bored and just wants a new challenge.

Most likely because he’s tired of Tomlin underachieving with players he Colbert has acquired and knows that Art2 is never getting rid of Tomlin.

Hopefully I'm wrong on that last one and this is just the first domino to fall...PLEASE TAKE TOMLIN WITH YOU! PLEASE!!!!

He was with Detroit before Pittsburgh though, so there's that.

If he does go and Tomlin stays, I'll lose it.

I'd like to see them at least retain Khan, fire Tomlin and all coordinators, and hire Bienemy as HC then let him pick his coordinators.

The Steelers have the cheapest coaching staff in the NFL. They're 32nd on money spent on assistant coaches. You get what you pay for. How does a team that values coaching and winning championships cut costs on coaches? Explain. It's not like their assistants are young.

Source: The Steelers have not received a request for permission from the Detroit Lions to speak to GM Kevin Colbert. They cannot talk to Colbert without the Steelers' consent.

He was. In the same way Arians was close to retiring.

Maybe internally there is some friction ala Cowher & Donahue. Cowher won.

Hopefully there isnt an internal rift with Dunce landing on the side of his HC.

Well if there is, there’s no question which side A2 would choose.

This franchise is dumb. Currently the laughing stock of the league. Thanks Mike!

Far be it from me to defend Rooney and the Steelers but there is a lot wrong with saying they are the cheapest, really?

Maybe it was bullshit, but supposedly the rumor was that they were paying Kieth Butler DC money when he was the LB coach while LeBeau was here.

Also, yes, they do have a lot of assistants that are young, inexperienced, just starting out. Matt Canada, Tom Bradley, Blaine Stewart, Eddie Faulkner, etc, they are all in just their first, second, 3rd years as NFL assistant coaches. You don't start out at top dollar when you start your NFL coaching career.

I brought this up just yesterday, not hard to read the tea leaves, but I suspected that Colbert was on the way out. When you are going from year to year, with no commitment beyond that, you can't run a franchise that way. Where is the accountability?

This is what I posted in the Pouncey thread:

The vibe I that I am getting is that it sure looks like the Steelers are close to a shakeup.

Kevin Colbert doesn't actually have a real contract anymore. He goes from year to year. So, after the current year is done, he thinks about whether he wants to come back, put his hand in the pile so to speak, and then if he decides he wants to come back, he merely signs a one year deal.

I think the Steelers deserve better. If Colbert isn't properly motivated, isn't all in, has his mind preoccupied with retirement, is thinking of retirement, then the Steelers should move on from Kevin Colbert.

I think they should promote from within, Rick Reiprish, would be a fine choice. Been in the Steelers personnel department since 2015, before that was with New Orleans and was their Director of College Scouting. Kevin Dotson this year reminds me of the type of mid round guards that Reiprish would find for NO, like Jahari Evans and Carl Nicks back in the day.

So let it be written, so let it be done!!!!

I think the Steelers/Rooney are starting to rethink the Colbert/Omar Khan style of contracts, the constant restructuring of contracts as well.

This all bodes well, maybe they realize that they have to shakeup the organization and start anew. Happened to Dick Haley/Chuck Noll, happened to Bill Cowher/Tom Donahoe and now it may be happening with Tomlin/Colbert.

Exciting times ahead!

My god, if I had to pick between the two, I would MUCH rather see Tomlin go. Colbert has selected some nice pieces over the years. Tomlin has done fuck all with it since 2008.
