Rank the Steelers Offensive Coordinators.
I’ll start with my own rankings.
Ken Whisenhunt
Bruce Arians
Ron Erhardt
Todd Haley
Chan Gailey
Mike Mularkey
Randy Fichtner
Kevin Gilbride
Ray Sherman
Guys I don’t remember well enough:
Joe Walton
Tom Moore
Or if you want to just remember and discuss any of them, that’s fine.

I think Haley was better than any of them but didn't have the success of Whiz. Ken really faded afterwards, IMO but for a while, he was a perfect fit for BB's skillset. Hard to evaluate for me since I'm no expert. But I think you can be great at your job and just not have the talent to work with as an OC or DC. I do think that Gilbride, Rustbelt, Mularkey were all failures overall as OC for the STeelers.Stallworth16 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 9:51 pmI’ll start with my own rankings.

Arians and Gailey really made things work without much talent
Moore and Noll are in a class by themselves......

That’s a good point about Chuck Noll. But wasn’t Chuck Noll’s play-caller really Terry Bradshaw?
Come to think of it, Terry Bradshaw is one of the best play-callers if not the best.

Bruce Arians is a very good head coach it turns out.
I liked Mularkey, I liked Whiz, I liked Arians. Moore was good. I liked Erhardt.

Banner in Three Rivers during the Walton era said it all.

I did not like Joe.

Didn't they go 7 straight without a TD or something ridiculous like that?

I do remember in 1990 they went the month of September without an offensive TD.

The first month of the season...it was bad, and then continued into 1991..after which Noll retired and Walton became a footnote.
He actually wasn’t a horrible coach...he just brought in a sophisticated offense and the team did not have the players who could run it.

Shockingly, 20th in points and 22nd in yards.
The defense was 3rd in points and #1 in yards....even more impressive given how awful the offense was. And "Blitzburgh" wouldn't be born for another 4 years... [but, in my memory, it was actually 1991 when Woodson asked Noll if they could "unleash hell"]

That is about where I am with the rankings, as well, though I would swap the rankings of Ron Erhardt and Chan Gailey. The only person I'd put above Tom Moore would be The Emperor himself. While it is true, as some have said, that Brad called the plays, Noll designed the offense and if you did not execute it the way he wanted, you would not QB long. That was Jefferson Street Joe Gilliam's issue in 1974. He fell in love with his arm, which was pretty amazing, but it wasn't quite the right time for that yet. Noll wanted to establish the run and physically wear down opponents (different time, but not too much, if you think about it, I would take that over what we have been seeing the past couple of years). He wanted the game plan executed as he designed it, even though he felt that it was the QB who has the best feel for the ebb and flow of a game, and knows the best spot to call certain plays over others. I am not sure if Brad ever fully realized that the tension between he and his head coach is what helped make them both greater than they would have been otherwise. I kind of think Coach Noll realized this (he rarely talked about these things), but Brad just can't see it, even now. Even his latest interview for his "Football Life" documentary, his bitterness was still on full display.jewelsongs wrote: ↑Fri Jan 15, 2021 11:27 pmTom Moore

And they actually won one of their games that September because they played the Oilers who were just installing their new Run and Shoot offense and were still trying to get that figured out. The Steelers beat them on a Sunday night when Rod Woodson had a punt return for a TD and DJ Johnson had a pick six along with a couple of Gary Anderson field goals.Kodiak wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 11:28 amShockingly, 20th in points and 22nd in yards.

Howard Griffith had to resort to chop-blocking him during the 1997 AFC Championship Game. An incredulous Kirkland asked Griffith, “Why do you have to use cheap tactics like chop-blocking?” Griffith replied “Why do you have to be a 300-pound linebacker?”
